  • Keeping warm during winter is a basic need we all share, and the natural warmth, comfort and ambience from a flickering fire is the nicest way to keep your home warm, dry and healthy.

Metro Fires are a family owned and operated New Zealand company with a long family history and we value our unique ‘family-based’ culture. We support local industry and New Zealand’s future by designing and manufacturing our products right here in New Zealand.

Our commitment to deliver the best heating solutions and keep New Zealand homes warm and dry has seen our range grow from a single model to New Zealand’s most extensive range of wood fires and complementary heating products.

We know you’ll love the warmth, comfort and quality of a New Zealand made Metro fire.

The three key factors to consider when choosing a wood fire are the installation options, correct model selection and achieving a safe, compliant installation.

The right size Metro fire for your home and heating requirements with correct operation and good dry fuel will provide many years of warmth and reliable heating.

    INSTALLATION OPTIONS

Decide on the type of installation you need and confirm if your home is located within a clean air zone or specified airshed. This will determine the type of Metro model you can install. Your Metro retailer or local council can advise of any specific emission requirements for your area.

    MODEL SELECTION

Select the right size Metro fire and flue system with the heating accessories you will need. Your retailer or installer can guide you in choosing the best model and most suitable location for installation to ensure optimum heat delivery is achieved. They can also help manage the council consent process through to completed installation.

    SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE

We recommend you have your new Metro fire installed by a NZHHA registered or suitably qualified installer. It is critical that the specified clearances, flue system and floor protector requirements are correct for a safe and compliant installation.

Choosing a fire Where to start?

    CLEAN AIR APPROVED

These models are suitable for any size property and can be installed into a clean air zone anywhere in New Zealand, unless more stringent regional rules apply.

Clean air models comply with the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) National Environmental Standards (NES). NES require less than 1.5gms of particles for each kilogram of dry wood burned (g/kg) and a minimum thermal efficiency of 65%.

The majority of the Metro clean air approved models are also NES compliant with a wetback fitted.

    ULTRA LOW EMISSION

ULEB is an acronym for ‘Ultra Low Emission Burner’. Put simply, they are some of the cleanest solid fuel burners on the market with incredibly low emissions.

Tested using the real-life operating test conditions of Canterbury Method (CM1), Metro Ultra Fires meet the Environment Canterbury emission and efficiency standards as well as the MfE National Environmental Standards.

Approved to install anywhere in New Zealand including the Canterbury, Nelson and Rotorua regions.

    LTD RURAL (2Ha+)

LTD models are specifically designed for lifestyle and rural properties and can only be installed on a property with a land area of two hectares or greater.

The main benefit of an LTD model is the responsive control of burn rate allowing overnight burning capabilities with correct operation.

The unique firebox design delivers longer burn times and all models can be fitted with either a 3kW or 4kW wetback ensuring winter warmth, cooking and water heating are all dominant features.

    FREESTANDING

Freestanding models are installed against a wall or into a corner situation with the ECO flue kit.

    BUILT-IN

Built-In models are ‘built’ into a timber framed cavity and installed with the ECO Built-In flue kit.

    INSERT

Insert models are ‘inserted’ into an existing masonry chimney and installed with the ECO Insert flue kit.

    Insert and Built-In series

The easy way to distinguish between an Insert or Built-In installation is an Insert fire is ‘inserted’ into an existing masonry chimney, where a Built-In fire requires a purpose ‘built’ timber framed cavity (false chimey) for installation.

INSERT INSTALLATION (MASONRY / BRICK CHIMNEY)

An Insert model is the perfect fit for replacing an inefficient open fireplace or older style insert fire. An Insert installation is into an existing masonry chimney with a Metro ECO Insert flue kit.

    BUILT-IN INSTALLATION (TIMBER FRAMED CAVITY)

The benefit of a ‘Built-In’ installation is that any wall surface in your home can be turned into a purpose built cavity to accommodate a wood fire. Built-In fires can also be elevated for modern styling and convenience.

You can install an Insert model into a timber framed cavity by installing the Insert firebox into a special ‘Vented Zero Clearance Cabinet’ (VZCC). All Metro Insert models have an appliance specific VZCC to achieve a ‘Built-In’ installation.

The Mega Smart Built-In is a dedicated built-in model and comes standard with a VZCC pre-fitted to its firebox.

All ‘built-in’ installations require the ECO Built-In flue kit. The ECO Built-In flue kit is designed to shield the fluepipe from all combustible materials within the timber cavity and incorporates the Metro ECO cowl for improved draw and performance.

    Metro ECO flue systems

An ECO flue kit is an efficient way to get the optimum performance from your wood fire – heating your home sooner and consuming less firewood.

    ECO FLUE KIT

The ECO flue kit differs from a standard flue system due to the much higher efficiency it operates at. All flue systems need moving air between the liners to ensure the outer flue liners remain cool. The ECO flue kits cooling air comes from either the ceiling cavity or from outside the home.

With a Metro ECO flue kit your home will be heated sooner and more efficiently. Once your home is heated to your desired temperature the fire can be turned to a lower setting consuming less firewood, saving you money.

Another performance benefit is the enhanced draw of the ECO cowl. The rocket shaped ECO cowl creates an upward vortex inducing updraft to the flue gases which increases the draw within the flue pipe improving the performance and heat output of your wood fire.

    STANDARD FLUE KIT

A Standard flue kit is very inefficient as much of the heat generated by the wood fire is drawn into the flue liners and vented outside. The flue liners are also open to the outside environment which can be noisy during high winds.

Lab testing of a Standard flue kit resulted in the heated air generated by the wood fire being drawn from the home at an astounding rate of 450 litres per minute. Even worse, this lost heat is replaced by cold air drawn into the room from outside at the same rate causing a constant incoming draught. This requires the fire to be operated at a higher burn rate to heat the constant incoming cold air.

Standard flue kits are not only less efficient, but they will heat your home slower using more firewood costing you both heat and money.

ECO FLUE + OP TION KIT

The ECO option kit is an additional kit installed with the ECO flue kit for homes without a vented ceiling cavity or homes that feature a sloping ceiling. Ventilation for the ECO flue kit is drawn into the flue liners from outside the home.

    S TANDARD FLUE KIT

Ventilation for a Standard flue kit is drawn into the flue liners from the room being heated by the wood fire. This lost heat is then replaced by cold air drawn into the room from outside at the same rate causing a constant incoming draught.

    ECO FLUE KIT

The ECO flue kit is suitable for all freestanding wood fires installed into a home with a vented ceiling cavity. Ventilation is drawn into the flue liners from the homes ceiling cavity allowing all the heat generated by the wood fire to remain inside the home.

    Heat transfer systems

Create a dry, healthy environment and reduce condensation and dampness in your home at the same time.

Metro heat transfer systems perfectly partner your Metro fire by distributing the excess heat generated by your fire via an insulated ducting system to warm other rooms in your home. This warm air then circulates back to the room with the wood fire to keep a continual cycle of warm air moving throughout your home.

The excess heat trapped at ceiling level can reach temperatures of up to 350C so it makes good sense to spread this warmth throughout your home.

    1 ROOM HEAT TRANSFER SYSTEM

Ideal for smaller homes or if you are only requiring one additional room to be heated. Featuring an inline fan capable of moving 320m3 of warm air per hour.

    3 ROOM HEAT TRANSFER SYSTEM

Designed to distribute an even heat throughout your home featuring a 3 speed LCD controller and european designed 3 speed mixed-flow fan with a maximum airflow of 910m3 of warm air per hour. Additional room outlets can be easily added to extend the system.

    FRESH AIR SYSTEM

Add the fresh air system to your 3 room heat transfer system and keep your home cooler over summer providing a dry and healthy environment for your family.

The fresh air system utilises the components of the 3 room heat transfer system and adds extra ducts, dampers and high grade filter.

Metro freestanding wood fires comply with AS/NZS 2918:2001.

Minimum installation clearances are in millimetres (mm) with a Pioneer double flue shield fitted to the appliance / flue pipe.

AS/NZS 2918:2001 allows for a reduction in minimum clearances as detailed in Tables 3.1 and 3.2 of the Standard. Selected Metro models have undergone additional testing for reduced installation clearances. The footnotes below the table apply to these selected models.

All clearances are measured from the following reference points as illustrated in the diagrams opposite.

    • The nearest combustible wall or surface (A, B, D, E, G, H)

    • The Metro’s flue centre (A, B, C, D)

    • The Metro’s cabinet / heatshield outermost point (E, F, G, H)

    • The edge of the ash floor protectors non-combustible surface (C, F, I, J, K, L, M).

1 Wee Rad (LEG) corner clearance (E) can be reduced to 120mm with Wee Rad corner wing shields fitted. This also reduces clearances (D) to 426mm, (K) to 1185mm and (L) to 987mm. The Wee Rad (LEG) model must be installed to a corner clearance (E) of 120mm. The corner wing shields are then fitted which gives a wall to shield corner clearance of 100mm.

2 Ultra Wee Rad corner clearance (E) can be reduced to 165mm with Wee Rad corner wing shields fitted. This also reduces clearances (D) to 471mm, (K) to 1245mm and (L) to 1031mm. The Ultra Wee Rad must be installed to a corner clearance (E) of 165mm. The corner wing shields are then fitted which gives a wall to shield corner clearance of 130mm.

3 Wee Ped corner clearance (E) can be reduced to 115mm if side extensions are fitted to the flue shield. This also reduces clearances (D) to 418mm, (K) to 1170mm and (L) to 978mm.

4 Classic Rad corner clearance (E) can be reduced to 180mm if side extensions are fitted to the flue shield. This also reduces clearances (D) to 460mm, (K) to 1435mm and (L) to 1131mm.
