Russian Metro

Metro (метро)
Moscow, St Petersburg and a few other large
cities in Russia have an underground (метро).
Natasha Kabiak 3
Метро is the fastest and most efficient way of
traveling around a big Russian city.
Trains are very frequent, every two minutes or
even less in the rush hour.
You will usually find buses, trolleybuses or
trams at the underground stations to take you
further.

To use the underground, you need to buy a card
from the касса (кассы – plural).

In Moscow you can buy tickets for more than
one journey at the same time by purchasing a
card. The more you pay for in advance the
cheaper it becomes.

In St Petersburg you can buy a token (жетон) for
a single journey or a card for several journeys.

Put your card or жетон into a machine and go
through the barrier when you see the green light
or the word ИДИТЕ.

If you go through when it’s the red light, or the
word СТОЙТЕ is showing, you’ll be grabbed by
a set of mechanical arms!

The first line of Moscow underground was
opened in 1935.
At present the entire length of the underground
lines is about 264 kilometers.
It carries 8750 thousands of passengers daily –
twice more than St Petersburg, Kiev and Minsk
undergrounds all together!

There are maps of the underground network in
each station and on each platform you will see a
list of stations for the current line.
Metro in Moscow (метро в Москве)
The station names on the platform are not as
clear as in London; you will have to listen out for
the recorded announcements given at each
station.
Natasha Kabiak 16
The phrase следующая станция means the next
station is.
Metro in Moscow (метро в Москве)
The other message you will hear at every station
is Осторожно, двери закрываются! (Careful,
the doors are closing.)
Natasha Kabiak 17
The first underground line in St Petersburg was
opened in 1955.
Metro in St Petersburg (метро в Санкт-Петербурге)
It is very deep and you can’t usually see the top
of the escalator (эскалатор) from the bottom.
Natasha Kabiak 18
At present the entire length of the underground
lines is about 113 kilometers.
Metro in St Petersburg (метро в Санкт-Петербурге)
There are 4 lines and 63 stations.
The deepest station is Проспект Большевиков -
71.8 meters!
