Metro Milwaukee SHRM Spring Conference 2018

April 26, 2018

Country Springs Hotel (The Ingleside Hotel)

2810 Golf Road Pewaukee, WI 53072

Our theme for this year’s conference is Elevate Your Game…. The challenges facing HR professionals are constantly changing, and so we must keep up and change too. How are things changing? We have new challenges with finding and retaining top talent. We have a workforce that is changing and responding to a different set of benefits and rewards. The compliance arena is a moving target. Data is coming at us faster than ever. Elevate your game. Quite simply, we need to be constantly improving just to stay at the level that we were at. If we don’t change, if we don’t improve, if we don’t elevate our game, we will slip backward in a highly competitive race. Our keynote speaker, Ross Bernstein, comes to us with a message from the sports world. He’s going to share things he’s learned from sports that translate into the business world. Into our world. He’s going to share how to elevate your game. Sports analogies and the language of sports are all around us: Teamwork, communication, strategy, driving revenue, finding and developing talent. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, the analogies and language of sports aren’t just clichés. If the stories about players and particular moments in a game seem a part of our modern mythology, it’s because they are. They provide the shared stories that help to make a culture. They bind us together. And they teach us to never give up; that no matter the odds, underdogs can and do win sometimes; practice is where winners are made. Just like leaders in the business world, famous sports coaches have different ways of inspiring their teams. Sometimes their words are inspirational, sometimes they are harsh. Herb Brook, coach of the U.S. Olympic “Miracle on Ice” hockey team inspired his players to do more with the talent they had. Brooks said, "Let me start with issuing you a challenge: Be better than you are. Set a goal that seems unattainable, and when you reach that goal, set another one even higher." Put another way, Elevate Your Game. We invite you to, Elevate your Game.

The Champion’s Code: Building Relationships Through Life Lessons of Integrity and Accountability from the Sports World

to the Business World 8:00—9:30 a.m. in the Grand Salon

The best-selling author of nearly 50 sports books, Ross Bernstein is an award-winning peak performance hall of fame business speaker who's keynoted conferences on five continents and has been featured on CNN, ESPN, Fox News, and “CBS This Morning,” as well as in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today. Ross' program is based on a series of books he wrote in which he was able to interview more than 500 professional athletes and coaches that all had one thing in common — they were all members of championship teams. In his research he concluded that the same metrics and characteristics that were common among champions in sports, were also common in peak performers in business. As he learned, champions have a very unique DNA — and his goal in this keynote session is to get audience members thinking about their own DNA — and about the DIFFERENTIATORS they possess which would ultimately lead customers to CHOOSE to do business with them. At the core of his message is the simple fact that we like to do business with people who we trust, who we like, and who just “get it” — CHAMPIONS. In an engaging, provocative, and visually entertaining style, Ross will use inspirational stories and poignant life lessons from the world of sports to show attendees how to:

• Create a “culture of excellence” by giving extraordinary customer service… • Generate momentum by utilizing the "currency of karma"... • Follow their moral compasses to win "the right way," with respect and integrity... • Be better leaders and create more "buy-in" by embracing change and failure... • Evolve from "order takers" to "trusted partners" by enhancing the quality of their relationships...

Session 1 9:45—10:45 a.m.

Why Pro Athletes use Mindfulness Training and Why You (and Your Employees) Should Too

Many view mindfulness as a fluffy, esoteric and spiritual touchy-feely fad. But not Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll. He has long stressed the importance mindful experiences and mental clarity to improve athletic performance. And he’s no longer alone. A number of professional athletes, including NFL teams such as the Falcons, Colts, and 49ers, have embraced mindfulness training as a valuable practice that can lift performance. Join Michelle Spehr for a conversation about the emerging practice of mindfulness in the locker rooms and the board rooms. She will share insights from researchers and practitioners who have established the effectiveness of mindfulness strategies for enhancing mental focus, resilience, emotional intelligence, empathy, and creativity. Michelle will also discuss the mindful leadership movement and how mindfulness practices can improve how individuals work together and thrive professionally. If you’re curious about mindfulness and want to learn specific strategies for fostering mindfulness at your organization, this is a workshop you will not want to miss!

Michelle Spehr The Benefit Services Group

Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be introduced to the

mindfulness and mindful leadership movement and explore how the related practices improve individual and organizational performance.

2. Participants will learn about a variety of mental skills training exercises that can enhance mental focus, resilience, emotional intelligence, empathy, and creativity in the workplace.

3. Participants will leave with practical resources they can use to continue exploring the concept of mindfulness and mindful leadership after the conference.

Michelle works with employers to identify and apply creative solutions that address wellbeing at both the employee and organizational levels. Her approach is based on new sciences and emerging strategies that help create high performing organizations. She is currently exploring how we can apply design thinking and human-centered design principles to reframe worksite wellbeing challenges and spark new ways of addressing these complex issues. In 2015 Michelle was recognized as the Employee Benefit Adviser (EBA) Wellness Adviser of the Year. Her professional credentials include certifications as a Master's level Health Education Specialist (MCHES), a Worksite Wellness Program Consultant (CWWPC) and Faculty designation from WELCOA. She serves as a board member for the UW Health and Wellness Management program and the Wellness Compliance Institute. She is also the co-founder of the newly launch Mindful City Project and a member of the planning committee for Fusion 2.0. This conference takes place in Minneapolis MN, November 2018 and will bring together people from multiple disciplines to collaborate on, learn about, and celebrate positive change at the workplace.

Step Up Your Benefits Game for the Cadillac Tax Era!

To compete in the “Cadillac Tax” era, HR professionals need to quickly raise their game to avoid the debilitating cost and people impact associated with this 40% excise tax on health care plans. The most successful HR teams will have a clear vision of where they want to go and a long-term strategy to guide their path away from this major obstacle. They will also align all resources with the new rules as they are applied beginning in 2020. And finally, their team will be prepared to execute a new playbook and develop the new skills necessary to consistently compete on a dramatically different health care benefits playing field. We’ll share our thoughts for selecting partners that will help you “get better” and create “sustainable” health care benefit programs. If you’re interested in elevating your health care benefits game to the next level, you should plan to attend this session.

Modern Human Capital Expectations: Beyond the Seat at the Table.

The profession of Human Capital has made tremendous strides over the past quarter century in moving from being an administrative support function to becoming a strategic investment in talent. However, the hard work to evolve again is just beginning. As modern Human Capital professionals and leaders, we now must anticipate and deliver on a new set of expectations, far beyond just being a voice at the table. The competencies and organizational outcomes for Human Capital require different investments in self-development, business acumen, operations savvy and people leadership. Together we’ll explore elements of this new landscape of new expectations and create a map to ensure you’re on track.

Kelly Renz Novo Group, Inc.

Learning Objectives: 1. Develop an understanding of the changing

landscape of Human Capital roles and responsibilities in organizations.

2. Define and discuss examples of new core competencies, and how they function and are applied within business, to grow and develop for career advancement.

3. Using case studies, we will map the Human Capital professional evolution to learn from examples of how to generate higher-value work within an organization and know what levers are most important. This moves Human Capital value from consultants to key advisors.

Kelly has never been one to conform to conventional business practices. Her innate desire to challenge the status quo and a relentless drive for better results influences how she approaches clients. One of her former CEO’s would say she could see around corners. And she believes that is possible – there is an art and science to running a business and she subscribes to creating custom solutions that are as unique as each Novo client. With nearly two decades of executive leadership experience in both human capital and operations/P&L roles, Kelly has found that organizational transformation and developing business execution excellence is where she thrives. Whether it is a start-up, change management, turn-around/reorg or high growth environment, she enjoys working on complex business problems across an enterprise. She has lead a breadth of practice areas supporting overall business effectiveness – M&A (deal project management, due diligence and integration lead roles), global human resources, organizational effectiveness and efficiency (including process improvement and workforce effectiveness), talent acquisition, talent development, org design/OD, employee relations and risk management, performance management and other core business operations and P&L management in operations.

Lessons Learned While Disrupting Traditional HR

Innovation is at the core of a successful creative marketing agency. That drive to innovate includes everything a company does to attract, grow and retain talent. Over the last four years, the HR team at GMR Marketing has lead projects to replace many of the traditional performance management, review and compensation models with new, employee-centric, flexible initiatives. At a time when many companies are talking about getting rid of the annual performance review, GMR has over two years' experience in a new model. It’s worked so well that GMR has taken it a step further and gone away from the annual merit increase towards “Real-Time Rewards” in which merit increases and bonuses happen continually throughout the year. Tom will share GMR’s journey and focus on the lessons learned to help other HR leaders considering similar HR disruptions.

GMR works with some of the world’s biggest brands on the world’s biggest stages (think the Olympics and Super Bowl) and the GMR HR team has been committed to providing employees that same world class experience. Most recently Tom’s team has transitioned away from the traditional annual review and merit increase to implement a new process built around real-time coaching and rewards.
