A bomb threat, an ‘Isotope’ and a
‘Wild Ruler’ all together have the
makings of a disastrous combination,
but they were not enough to derail
top Queensland juvenile Rothfire, who yesterday
continued his rags-to-riches rise with his pillar-to-
post win in the Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at
Eagle Farm.
On an eventful day at Brisbane’s premier
racetrack, the Robert Heathcote-trained Rothfire
(2 g Rothesay - Huss On Fire by Hussonet) took his
record to five wins from six starts with an easy win
against five rivals in the Champagne Classic. The
horse dubbed the ‘Thrilla from Chinchilla’ by his
owners was returning to the races for the first time
since suffering a shock defeat in the QTIS 2YO
Jewel (1200m) at the Gold Coast in March, finishing
second to Kisukano (Bel Esprit). Cont. page 2>>

Breaking very quickly from gate two
yesterday, Rothfire was straight into the lead under Jim Byrne, only facing
moderate pressure from an overracing Wild Ruler (Snitzel). Throughout,
he appeared to be in control, kicking clear upon straightening and
reaching the line a length and a quarter clear of the Tony Gollan-trained
Isotope (Deep Field). Wild Ruler was a nose away in third.
Rothfire was immediately wound into $5 favourite with the TAB for
the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m), to be run over the shortened trip this year.
Although his only defeat came at 1200 metres before yesterday’s victory at
that trip, Heathcote believes that he will get a mile in time.
“It’s just good to have him back,” Heathcote said. “I think he beat a
couple of good horses so he is right up there. I really do have a lot of time
for this horse. He has done everything we have asked of him.
“I had a few self-doubts, which in hindsight I shouldn’t have had.
When Jimmy got to the 300, I thought ‘he’s had a breather’ and he found
that kick. We go to the 1400 metres of the Atkins now and we will see what
he can do.
“I think we will find Jimmy saying he is such a laid back, cool dude,
he just relaxes.”
Byrne added: "Rothfire is pretty foolproof and he really jumped well
again today. Bring on the Atkins."
The Champagne Classic holds special significance to Heathcote. It
was the first Group race he won in 2000, taking the race with Chenar (Just
Awesome)
"Chenar's daughter Funtantes won the Champagne in 2009 and now
we have won it again," Heathcote said. "It is my favourite race."
Rothfire will once again tackle Isotope and Wild Ruler in the J J Atkins,
as well as Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Wisdom
Of Water (Headwater). Last time Wisdom Of Water met Rothfire, the
latter was nine lengths superior, although he has gone ahead in leaps and
bounds since.
The Champagne Classic was the first of the features to be run at Eagle
Farm yesterday after a bomb threat temporarily brought the meeting to a
halt.
Horses were parading for the third race when police were called to
the racecourse. A thorough inspection of the track and the racetrack
facilities, which were mostly deserted due to Covid-19 protocols,
revealed no abnormalities and the third took place an hour later than
scheduled.
Chief steward Peter Chadwick said: "We can confirm police were
called to the track and undertook an operation. We can't make any further
comment on the details of the incident as police were in charge."
Rothfire became the sixth stakes winner for Lyndhurst Stud’s
Rothesay (Fastnet Rock) and his first at Group 2 level. It comes as the
rising 14-year-old enjoys something of a resurgence; after two seasons of
serving 28 mares, he covered a book of 98 mares last year. He will stand
at an unchanged fee of $4,950 (inc GST) for the upcoming breeding
season.
Bred by Wally and Jill Gleeson and their sons Simon, Jacob and Tom
under their Gleeson Thoroughbreds banner, Rothfire was born and raised
at their Chinchilla property. While he was inspected by the major sales
companies, he was deemed unsuitable as a yearling prospect and was
instead sold to Heathcote for $10,000 - although it was a bill that Heathcote
had to pay twice due to a phishing scam.
Now, Rothfire has made that $20,000 outlay look cheap, earning
$495,400 in prize-money through his six starts.
Rothfire was the final foal out of Huss On Fire (Hussonet), an unraced
mare who was retired from the breeding barn in 2018 and died last year.
She produced six foals; five raced for three winners, including six-time
victor Rylee’s Saga (Real Saga).
While there is little black-type in his immediate family, his family
traces back to fifth dam Gently (Grey Sovereign), winner of the Nell Gwyn
Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) in 1965. Among her descendants are Group 1 winners
Agnes World (Danzig), Tourist (Tiznow), Librettist (Danzig), Dubai
Destination (Kingmambo) and Grease (Filiberto).
Rothfire will aim to become the second juvenile Group 1 winner
this season with Hussonet (Mr Prospector) as a damsire, with ATC Sires’
Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) also out of a Hussonet mare.

Victorem into Stradbroke after Victory
Port Macquarie trainer Jenny Graham was unable to be trackside
at Eagle Farm yesterday due to coronavirus restrictions, but she was
celebrating from afar as she scored her first Group win with Victorem (5
g I Am Invincible - Playful Miss by Foreplay) in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2,
1200m).
Victorem bounced back after bucking at the start first-up in the BRC
Sprint (Gr 3, 1200m) at Doomben. Forced to barrier trial last Tuesday, he
was given an easy time by Mark Du Plessis to prime him for his second-up
assignment yesterday.
However, he was unwanted by the market, starting at $17 with Vega
One (Lope De Vega) the $4.80 favourite.
Jumping far better yesterday, he was first from the gates but was
eased by Du Plessis to sit midfield one off the rail, five lengths from
heavily-backed leader Winter Bride (Not A Single Doubt). Du Plessis held
Victorem together until well into the straight, switching to the inside and
making ground rapidly.
Dashing through to hit the lead, he held off the late charge of
Niccanova (Nicconi) by a length and a quarter, with a long neck back to
Deep Image (Testa Rossa) in third. He has now won eight of his 19 starts.
Graham sent Victorem to Eagle Farm trainer Barry Lockwood to aim
at the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m), with the handler unable to
travel north herself with the Queensland border closed.
"Of course I would love to be there but you have to do the right thing in
these times," she said. "I would just like to thank Barry and his staff who have
been fantastic. To be able to trust someone with your best horse says it all."
After missing a start in last year’s Stradbroke Handicap, Victorem is
now guaranteed a run in this year’s event in a fortnight’s time and is not
eligible for a penalty. However, he may need a new jockey with Du Plessis
already booked for yesterday’s fourth placegetter Outback Barbie (Spirit
Of Boom); she currently sits outside the top 20 but should get a run with a
number of unlikely acceptors ahead of her.
"I am sure we will get plenty of jockeys ringing us. This horse has been
so good to us and already won over a million dollars," Graham said. "It
would be fantastic for him to win a Group 1 and he deserves it.”
Bred by Michelle Kelly and offered by Eliza Park International as a
weanling at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale Select Session in
2015, he failed to reach his reserve of $60,000, being passed in for $57,500.
Offered almost 18 months later at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast
2YOs In Training Sale by Symphony Lodge, he was purchased by Graham
for $65,000. He has now earned almost $1.3 million.
Victorem is the first foal out of Sydney winner Playful Miss (Victorem).
She has since produced fillies by Mahisara (More Than Ready) and Denman
(Lonhro), while her Territories (Invincible Spirit) filly went through the Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year, selling for $150,000. She is
back in foal to Territories after missing to I Am Invincible last year.
Victorem is I Am Invincible’s 12th Australian stakes winner this
season, his eighth at Group level.

Costa, Chau celebrate Group success with Giant
Trainer Michael Costa and jockey Allan Chau both recorded their first
Group win yesterday when they combined to take the Gunsynd Classic (Gr
3, 1800m) with Supergiant (3 g Red Giant - My Marguerite ex Spectacular
Love) yesterday.
Ridden with aplomb on the speed by Chau, Supergiant held on
by the narrowest of margins over the fast-finishing Ballistic Boy (Smart
Missile) for trainer Chris Anderson with favourite Kinane (Reliable Man)
producing a decent but non-threatening effort for third.
It took Supergiant’s record to three wins from five starts, with the
Queensland Derby replacement, the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2200m), his
next target.
Costa made the move to Queensland in 2016, leaving behind a Sydney
operation that included subsequent Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain). While it may have proved a
difficult pill to swallow then, Costa has long shaped as a potential top
trainer and his first Group win has the potential to bring further success
to his stable.
Chau himself made the move to south-east Queensland this season,
having ridden around the NSW Northern Rivers region for a number of years.
Supergiant had finished second to Vanna Girl (Husson) in the
Doomben Guineas (Listed, 1615m) at his last start with Ballistic Boy in
third. And while a number of high-profile jockeys had chased the ride for
the Gunsynd Classic, Costa said he had never contemplated replacing
Chau on the gelding.
"Allan does a lot of the hard work and he deserves his chance. It is his
first Group winner and mine too so it is all the sweeter," Costa said. "Now
he can go to the Rough Habit Plate in a fortnight. He will be even better for
the effort today. He is a horse which seems to get fit with racing and that
was only his fifth run.”
Kinane passed a veterinary exam before being allowed to take his
place in the field, having been involved in a float incident on his way to
the track.
Taken back from the outside gate by Ryan Maloney, he made up
decent ground late but never looked a threat to the top two.
Supergiant hails from a Scandinavian family with third dam Forn Vell (Air
Trooper) a prominent stakes winner in Denmark and Sweden. Also from the
family is Kibbutz (Golan), winner of the 2007 Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).
His dam My Marguerite (Spectacular Love), a maiden from 23 starts,
has only produced five foals in her time at stud. Supergiant is one of three
to race, along with two-time winner Zavamar (Savabeel) and five-time
placegetter Five Princes (Red Giant).
In addition, she has a Puccini yearling too, but has not been served
the last two seasons.
Originally trained by Jim Collett at Matamata in New Zealand, Costa
picked up Supergiant after he was shown a barrier trial effort from
Cambridge last year by bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo.
"Chris Waller's Queensland manager recommended Phill so I owe
him a favour," Costa said.
“Supergiant was actually the first horse that Phill put forth to me. I
received an email and you never really want to jump into the first one, but
I liked his trial and he was priced affordably at $70,000.
“It was always going to be a little bit of a punt for owners given he is by a
sire in Red Giant that is not that well known in Australia, but on the back of his
trial and reasonable price, we probably could have sold him five times over.”
Red Giant served six seasons at Westbury Stud in New Zealand
between 2010 and 2016 before he was sold to Ozcolak Stud in Turkey in
2017, where he stands under the Turkey Jockey Club banner. He stood for
10,000 lira (AUD$2,250) in 2018, with his fee now private.

Second for ContributerJeronimos (2 c ex Viana by Volksraad) provided
Mapperley Stud’s Contributer (High Chaparral)
with a second individual winner when
taking out a 1200-metre maiden handicap at
Newcastle on Saturday. Having his second
start, the Godolphin galloper defeated Brutality
(Shamus Award) by a half-length with regally-
bred debutant Sammy (Medaglia d’Oro) a
further length and three-quarters away in third.
Jeronimos made NZ$250,000 at the 2019 Karaka
Yearling Sales when sold to Godolphin from the
draft of Mapperley Stud; out of Listed winner
Viana (Volksraad), he is a half-brother to three-
time winner Camelle (Camelot). Contributer
stands for NZ$10,000 (plus GST) in 2020.
Seven for Night Of ThunderFormer Darley shuttler Night Of Thunder
continued his excellent record from a relatively
small crop of 58 foals sired during his one-year
stint at Northwood Park in 2017 when Winning
Weather (2 f ex Lemon Soju by Sebring) became
his seventh individual winner following victory
at Murray Bridge on Saturday. She is the first foal
from Lemon Soju, herself a maiden winner at
Kembla Grange. Lemon Soju has a yearling filly
by Unencumbered (Testa Rossa) and a weanling
by Nostradamus (Medaglia d’Oro). Night Of
Thunder stands at Kildangan Stud in Ireland for
€25,000 (approximately AUD$42,000).
Six for Rothesay Rothesay (Fastnet Rock) sired his sixth
individual stakes winner when Rothfire (2 g
ex Huss On Fire by Hussonet) ran away with
the Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle
Farm on Saturday. The gelding is now at the
head of the betting for the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m). Rothesay stands at Lyndhurst Stud
for a fee of $4,950 in 2020.
11 for Red GiantRed Giant (Giant's Causeway) enjoyed the
11th stakes success of his breeding career
as Supergiant (3 g ex My Marguerite by
Spectacular Love) landed the Gunsynd Classic
(Gr 3, 1800m) at Eagle Farm. Red Giant stood
at Westbury Stud in New Zealand from 2010 to
2016 before being exported to Turkey to stand
at Ozcolak Stud in 2017.
Great Again atones for Free At Last at FlemingtonWestern Australian galloper Great Again (7 g
Viscount - Free At Last ex Senor Pete) has already
had more success at Flemington than his dam after
he took the Straight Six (Listed, 1200m) yesterday.
Great Again, who scored his first stakes win earlier
this season in the Belmont Newmarket (Listed,
1200m) in Perth, was having only his second start in
the east. Great Again led all the way under Declan
Bates, holding off the late surge of comeback
galloper Rich Charm (Danerich) by a nose with top-
weight Home Of The Brave (Starspangledbanner) a
head away in third. Great Again is the fourth foal out
of Group 2 winner Free At Last (Senor Pete), who
finished second in the 2005 Craiglee Stakes (Gr 2,
1600m) among three beaten starts at Flemington;
she was controversially omitted from the 2004
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) despite being inside
the top 24 runners.
Cosmic Gossip bound for AtkinsCaloundra filly Cosmic Gossip (Spill The Beans)
is set to take her chance in the J J Atkins (Gr 1,
1400m) following a convincing success at Eagle
Farm yesterday. The Stuart Kendrick-trained
juvenile came from last early to beat Ready For
Magic (Better Than Ready) by a short neck in the
XXXX Dry 2YO (1200m). The filly was already in
the field for the J J Atkins on June 6 thanks to her
win in a big prize-money race at the Sunshine
Coast in January, with Saturday's victory taking
her to $126,000 in earnings and eighth in the
ballot to make the field. "The big Eagle Farm track
suits her best and that is a big plus for us in the
J J Atkins," Kendrick said. "As you saw she likes
to find her feet and then really hit the line hard.
I know everyone is aiming at the J J Atkins but she
is in the field and reaching her top now."
Peltzer to target spring featuresPeltzer (So You Think) maintained his
unblemished record and has some spring
carnival highlights high on his agenda following
a smart victory over a well-regarded field at
Randwick. Gerald Ryan's two-year-old showed a
smart change of gears in Saturday's Darley 2YO
Handicap (1300m) under a tactically-astute Kerrin
McEvoy ride, coasting through the heavy ground
to score by four lengths over favourite Overlord
(Sebring). A number of the unbeaten colt's rivals
were on trial for a start in next month's J J Atkins
(Gr 1, 1400m) in Queensland, but Peltzer himself
is almost certain to be spelled. "If I have my way he
is going out," Ryan said, who regards Peltzer as one
of his best two-year-olds and sees similarities with
his former Group Two winner Rubick (Encosta De
Lago). "There are plenty of races in the spring you
can pick with him. He is versatile so anything up
to 1600 (metres) you could aim him towards, the
Golden Rose, the Caulfield Guineas. That's why I
don't want to bottom him out now. He reminds
me more of Rubick in stature but he's like all the
good ones, he's got a great nature."

Day makes most of city switchIrish jockey Louise Day's decision to switch
from the provincial to metropolitan riding
zone has been vindicated with the apprentice
celebrating two milestones at Randwick. Day,
who serves her apprenticeship with Kris Lees
at Newcastle, recently opted to quarantine for
two weeks in order to ride in town. Following
an instant success aboard the Lees-trained
Wandabaa (Wandjina) during the week, Day
backed it up with another victory for her
boss on Witherspoon (Exceed And Excel) at
Randwick, her first in Saturday city grade. "This
is a massive thrill, thanks to Kris Lees for his
support," she said. "My three-kilo claim, it is
definitely a big help, especially on these wet
tracks." The rider, who was previously based in
Britain, continued her memorable few days by
registering a double aboard the Matthew Dale-
trained Man Of Peace (Zariz) in the Octagonal
Handicap (1400m).
Bivouac’s brother scores seventh successCoruscate (Exceed And Excel) may still be
some way off emulating the achievements
of dual-Group 1 winning brother Bivouac,
but he notched his seventh career victory at
Randwick on Saturday when taking out the At
Sea Handicap (1100m) under Kerrin McEvoy.
"Darren (Beadman) said to keep him occupied
because he might prick his ears late, which he
did at the furlong post, but once he heard them
coming he reapplied himself," McEvoy said,
after Coruscate gave him a double following
Peltzer’s (So You Think) victory earlier in the
day. Trainer Darren Beadman felt the horse
had also benefited from switching states; "Since
he's gone to Melbourne he has got his mojo
back and it was a tidy effort today."
Clipperton back in the spotlight with StockmanJoe Price feels he has a decent horse on his
hands after Stockman (Tavistock) narrowly
landed the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation
Handicap (2000m) at Randwick yesterday. "At
the start of his preparation I was thinking he
was a Queensland Derby horse," Pride said.
“After a win like that, he would be going there at
single-figure odds but the race isn't on this year.
It was a really good staying performance and I
can only see him getting better as he gets over
further and matures a bit as well." Stockman’s
victory was a very welcome first metropolitan
winner for Sam Clipperton since Anzac Day,
although it was hard fought: "He thought his
job was done at the furlong and when he had a
fit horse of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott's to
run down, it could have gone either way but to
his credit he really dug deep," Clipperton said.
Sasko spoils plunge for Moody’s Shepard
Matt Cumani’s Sasko (Teofilo) spoiled the
expected celebrations that would have marked
Peter Moody’s first metropolitan winner since
returning to training, when showing a real liking
for the wet track at Flemington. Moody saddled
Shepard (Sea The Moon) as a well-backed
favourite, but the horse that gave him his first
winner since his return disappointed and it was
left to Warrnambool Cup carnival winner Sasko
and apprentice Michael Poy to grind out victory
with an pillar-to-post performance on the heavy
surface. "He loves it soft. He just gets through it
and makes it hard for the other horses, particularly
with his style of running," Cumani said.
Nostalgia for Newitt, Price at FlemingtonCraig Newitt and Mick Price rolled back
the years when teaming up for victory
with Immortal Love (Snitzel) in the Tom
Melbourne Trophy (1400m) at Flemington.
The win represented Newitt’s first victory since
relocating from his native Tasmania following
the Covid-19 enforced shut down of racing in
the state. Price had teamed up with Newitt for
multiple Group 1 victories in the past and the
trainer was quick to praise the jockey’s strength.
"He's an aggressive rider and gets the best out
of them and it suits my horses, I guess,” mused
Price. "I did say don't be in front at the top of the
straight, not sure if he heard that or not, but the
leader did faint.”
Reykjavik gives Smith a Flemington doubleApprentice Lewis German earned plenty of
plaudits for his ice cool ride on Reykjavik (Artie
Schiller) to take out the Apache Cat Handicap
(1600m) at Flemington yesterday. Despite
boasting a Listed and Group 3 win last winter,
Reykjavik was sent off an $11 chance and German
took him wide on the heavy track before cruising
to a comfortable victory over favourite Shot Of
Irish (Canford Cliffs) with highly-touted import
Django Freeman (Campanologist) a further head
away in third. "Wasn't that a good ride?" Shane
Jackson, representing winning trainer Lindsay
Smith, said. "Halfway down the straight I thought
he might want to get going, but he knew the horse
he had under him and he was really travelling. He
let down beautifully and galloped to the line very
impressively."

Tough times for Palmerston North trainer GrayOctogenarian trainer Kevin Gray hasn’t
particularly enjoyed the last couple of months.
The horseman’s age group have had the most
stringent measures imposed on them as a result
of the Covid-19 pandemic, and he just wants
things to go back to normal, including racing. “I
have been all right, but it has been pretty hectic
when you have got 50-odd horses around you
and we are going nowhere,” he said. “I had 10
staff and I had to put off five of them because
I didn’t have the work for them. I have had no
income for nearly two and a half months. It has
been very tough. I’ve only had one owner who
has called me and has told me to sell his horses.
I have got five going to Australia and another
five of his on gavelhouse.com.”

Kodiac gelding tops Hong Kong International Sale
The first session of the Hong Kong International
Sale, which was postponed twice due to
coronavirus, was held at Sha Tin yesterday. The
session only featured northern hemisphere-
purchased horses, with their southern
counterparts from Australia, New Zealand and
South Africa set for a second session in July.
The sales-topper was a grey three-year-old by
Kodiac (Danehill) out of Group 3-placed Irish
mare Coolnagree (Dark Angel), who was sold for
HK$6.5 million (A$1.28 million) to Kerm Din, best
known as the owner of Pakistan Star (Shamardal).
He was originally purchased by the Hong Kong
Jockey Club for 525,000gns (A$1.03 million) at the
2018 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and comes
from the family of Lucky Nine (Dubawi), who was
twice Champion Sprinter in Hong Kong and won
four Group 1 races. A total of 11 lots went through
the ring, all unreserved, yielding HK$31.7 million
(A$6.25 million).
Heian Stakes win for Omega PerfumeOmega Perfume (Swept Overboard) took his fifth
stakes win yesterday, winning the Heian Stakes
(Gr 3, 1900m) on the Kyoto dirt. Stepping out for
the first time since winning the Tokyo Daishoten
(Gr 1, 2000m) in December, Omega Perfume
swept home from midfield to take the Heian
Stakes by a length over Vengeance (Casino Drive).
Gold Dream (Gold Allure) was a further two and
a quarter lengths away in third on his first run
since finishing sixth to Maximum Security (New
Year’s Day) in the world’s richest race, the Saudi
Cup in February. Omega Perfume is likely to head
back to the NAR circuit for his next start, with the
Teio Sho (Listed, 2000m), a domestic Grade 1, a
possible target.

Nica snatches first Group-level victoryNica (Kamsin) registered victory by the narrowest
of margins after rallying gamely under Adrie
de Vries in the Badener Meile (Gr 2, 1600m) at
Baden-Baden. Aviateur (Intense Focus) looked
to have made a race winning move after coming
from well off the pace to hit the front with 200m
to race, but Nica rallied bravely to run down the
leader and put her head in front where it mattered.
A second victory at stakes level, following a Listed
win in May last year, Nica has been a model of
consistency with multiple placings at Group
level. Her dam, Narrika (Santiago), only ran four
times for zero wins, but is a half-sister to German
8.5f/1m2f winner Neapel (Beat Hollow). Kamsin
(Samum) has sired five stakes winners to date, of
which Nica was already one, and stands at Haras
de la Tuilerie in France for €6,000 (approximately
AUD$10,000) in 2020.
Namos narrowly retains Silberne Pietsche crownIn a pulsating finish to the Silberne Pietsche (Gr 3,
1200m) at Baden-Baden, Namos (Medicean) just
denied the ultra-game K Club (Kodiac) by a nose
to make it back to back wins in the race, having
defeated Group 1 winner The Right Man (Lope
De Vega) in the 2019 edition. Odds-on favourite
Majestic Colt (Clodovil) finished close up in third,
with the front three pulling clear of the remainder
of the field. Medicean (Machiavellian) was a
stalwart of Cheveley Park Stud near Newmarket.
He retired from stud duties in 2017 and died in
2018. He is now the sire of 48 stakes winners, of
which 10 were at Group 1 level.
Keeneland applies for summer meetKeeneland has submitted a request to the
Kentucky Horse Racing Commission’s Race
Dates Committee for a five-day summer meet
of spectatorless racing from July 8 to July 12, the
Lexington track announced Friday. The summer
dates accommodate a portion of the 16-day
spring program that Keeneland was forced to
cancel due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Keeneland
will also share return-to-racing protocols with
Kentucky governor Andy Beshear's office and
local health officials for their approval. Ten
graded stakes that are traditionally run during the
track's spring meet highlight the summer meet
schedule. Among them is the Blue Grass Stakes
(Gr 2, 9f) and Ashland Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f), preps
for the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and Kentucky
Oaks (Gr 1, 9f), respectively; the Jenny Wiley
Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f), the Maker’s 46 Mile Stakes (Gr
1, 1m) and the Madison Stakes (Gr 1, 7f).
Crisfords to form Britain’s first licensed training partnershipSimon Crisford and his son Ed are set to
become Britain's first officially licensed training
partnership. The groundbreaking move comes
following confirmation the BHA will now accept
joint trainers' licence applications, mirroring the
initiative successfully introduced in Australia.
Warmly welcoming the new venture, Simon
Crisford said: "Ed and I have become joint licence
holders as well as business partners, something
my owners have very much welcomed and
are fully supportive of.” Ed Crisford previously
worked as an assistant trainer to John Gosden
and is relishing the chance to officially begin the
partnership. "Joint licensing has been proven to
work extremely well in Australia," he said. "One
of my great friends David Eustace is a training
partner with Ciaron Maher, and he’s explained
that joint responsibility and accountability has
really improved their business model in so many
different ways. I'm very much looking forward to
the new challenge."
Glorious Goodwood, Ebor Festival to remain in regular spotsRacing in Britain will return to something far
closer to normal in July, according to a fixture list
for the northern summer months released by the
British Horseracing Authority on Friday. Glorious
Goodwood, scheduled for July 28 to August 1, and
the Ebor meeting at York, which is due August 19 to
22, will both be run in their original slots. A full race
program for June is scheduled to be published on
Monday, after Ascot revealed its enhanced order of
running for the Royal meeting on Friday.

Analysis: Rothfire enhanced his prospects for the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at this track on June 6 with an impressive performance in winning here, taking his record to five wins and a second from six starts. After beginning brilliantly, he went straight to the front and then travelled nicely at a reasonable tempo (first 600m 35.93) before lifting the pace nearing the home turn. He held an advantage halfway down the straight and then went on to score comfortably, sprinting home his last 600m in a smart 34.47. Isotope began well and then eased to race in fourth place, one out and one back. She made her move at the turn, went to third at the 200m
and kept finishing gamely in the sprint home for a very good second, her first defeat in three starts. Wild Ruler showed good early pace and soon settled outside the leader and eventual winner. He put in his bid on turning for home and kept battling on well in the straight, only missing second narrowly in the last few strides. Beyliks raced in last place in the six-runner field, got into clear running on straightening and kept fighting on for (5.4 lengths) fourth. [KB]

Analysis: Talented Port Macquarie-trained gelding Victorem, improved by one run back, staged a really good effort in winning here, his eighth win and his third at stakes level in 19 starts. After a smart beginning from his good barrier (3), he settled in sixth place (between runners) tracking a reasonable tempo (first 600m 36.35). He improved nicely in the centre on turning for home, took a split at the 200m, hit the front shortly afterward and then went on to win comfortably. Niccanova settled just beyond midfield, improved (deep) at the turn and did well in running on for second. Deep Image began quickly from his wide barrier (10) and then enjoyed a good trip in second place. He challenged at the 200m and then kept fighting well for third. Outback Barbie had a nice run in fourth place (one out and one back). She put in her bid at the 200m and then kept battling on quite well for (1.9 lengths) fourth. Tyzone settled near last from his outside barrier (13) and did well in running on well (wide out) for (2.2 lengths) fifth. Winter Bride was smartly away and went to the front and held the lead until nearing the 200m before holding on for (2.4 lengths) sixth. Tambo’s Mate was a handy third on the rails and held on for (2.6 lengths) seventh. Kementari was slowly away, settled in second last place (on the rails) and was still well back at the turn before making good late ground under his 58kg in the sprint home for (3 lengths) eighth, staging a sound effort under the circumstances. Analysis: Progressive three-year-old Supergiant went from winning a Class 1 (1350m) at Ipswich on April 26 to finishing runner-up in the Daybreak Lover Stakes (Listed, 1615m) at Doomben on May 9 to now scoring here in Group 3 class, albeit by the barest of margins. He again went to the front and then set a solid pace (first 1200m 1:12.48). He grabbed a break on straightening and then fought gamely when challenged to score a narrow but very good win. Ballistic Boy settled in seventh place, between runners, but was shuffled to be well back nearing the 600m. He took a split at the turn, went through to a distant third approaching the 200m and kept making good ground, failing by a nose at the post for second after staging a good performance. The favourite Kinane went back from his outside barrier (14) and settled near the tail of the field. He was still conceding the leaders a big start at the 600m as he commenced a wide move. He then put in a strong run in the centre of the track and ran on really well for third, his wide barrier proving costly. Sky Horse also went back from a wide barrier (13) and he raced in last place until nearing the turn. He improved between runners at the 300m and did well in running on for (3.6 lengths) fourth at his first start in five runs outside of Victoria. [KB]

Analysis: A consistent winner in Western Australia but having just his second run in Victoria, Great Again proved too speedy in scoring his second Listed stakes success and tenth career win in 22 starts. He was first out and co-led to the crossing, grabbed a narrow lead at the 400m and edged a neck clear at the 200m. Hotly challenged on both his inner and outer he never relented and fought hard for a good win by a short head. A fine effort from Rich Charm who sat second last at the crossing, moved out at the 300m, got a nice split then chased hard to the line. Home Of The Brave camped just off the pace from the 400m, challenged strongly from the 200m but could not get past while Malibu Style, who was handy enough at the 300m, was doing his best work late for fourth. Analysis: Immortal Love had his eight opponents in trouble soon after straightening to bolt in by three and a half lengths and remain unbeaten in two starts. He settled a length second but approaching the 600m went up to co-lead. Starting the run home he went clear by two at the 400m, by three at the 200m and was able to coast the last 100m for an easy win. Khoekhoe sat fifth, one out from the 800m, fourth turning in and kept going to take over second at the 200m but was never going to threaten the winner. From second last Indictment pulled widest into the straight and kept up a fair run to the line for third from Rock The Ring who moved into third at the 300m but could only battle to the line for a distant fourth. Analysis: Maintaining his unbeaten record at start three, Peltzer came right away over the last 200m for the easiest of wins over the small six runner field. He was quickly away to lead early but did not find the rail until the 1000m from where he dictated terms. Rounding into the straight he hugged the fence, strolled two lengths clear at the 300m and kept increasing the lead to the 100m but was allowed to ease near the line, clear by four lengths. Overlord missed the start but improved to sit fourth, one out past the 800m. He went four wide starting the run home but took time to wind up, took over second at the 150m but had no chance of catching the winner. Achiever followed the winner into the straight, moved out at the 200m and nudged into third just short of the post. [LJ]
