Primaria Federal Roberto Canedo Martinez English Classes through
PNIEB twice a week 5 classes of 37-42
students each, 4th and 5th Grade
3 other PNIEB English Teachers in addition to classroom teachers
Cross-cultural Aspects
Public school system differs drastically from that in the states—policies, amenities, staff, procedures, rules
Flag ceremony, special day presentations, morning exercise routines
Cross-Cultural Aspects (cntd)
Class start time changes with the season—few were notified when exactly this was to take place
Classroom teachers’ mostly authoritarian styles vs newer teaching methods now promoted in the states
Classroom teachers respect or lack thereof of the authority of English teachers in their classrooms
Best/Worst, Goals/Expectations
Best: Relative freedom with lesson planning, Affectionate/Appreciative Students
Most Difficult: Large classes and extremely wide range in levels of English due to private tutoring or their having been in a PNIEB school the previous year
See students become more confident in using English as well as more motivated to try to learn new things through classroom activities and on their own time
