1. Children’s Health in Taiwan1. Children’s Health in Taiwan1. Children’s Health in Taiwan1. Children’s Health in Taiwan

• MoE reports students do not receive sufficient exercise (Jan 2006)

• Nov 2008 Department of Health survey shows one student out of four is overweight (Junior High & High School). This is 3 years after MoE report = NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN!

• Sports inside school is supposed to be 2 hours a week, where in reality is much less and poorly organised, with rarely qualified teachers

• If sports are not introduced from a young age i.e Elementary it is proven to become much more difficult to get active later i.e Junior High through to adulthood.

• THE COMMUNITY MUST ACT!

• Top-down only two professional team sports exist, Baseball & Basketball. And Baseball continues to uncover foul play!

• 2009 was a fantastic opportunity to promote sports with Taiwan hosting two major international events. The World Games & Deaflympics. Was enough really done to take advantage of these great events, especially for the young generation?

• For school sports the MoE receives requests from numerous sports associations and offers these to the schools. The schools often swap & choose each semester, especially where prize-money is at stake. Where is the sport development in such a system?
