Concours 2016
What a spectacle the cars made at this years Concours; the site chosen by Roy was on the
banks of the Mersey River opposite the Spirit of Tasmania and I'm guessing he did not
envisage the support this event received as the park was packed, in fact cars had to be re-
arranged to make room for the final judging.
Twenty five of the displayed cars had entered and the makeups were 5 T types, Peter
Thorne had his concours winning TF entered, Peter Richards TF Special , Sophie entered
the very sporty looking TC, also the Jeffrey's stunning dark green example with Derek
Holden's TF completing the class.
Mike Smith had his immaculate Y sedan entered and for those unfamiliar with Michael, he
is the face we regularly see on TV promoting Midway Furniture.
Wayne Jessup's newly restored A along with the Frasers and Kuzniarski's completed the
A's.
Nine "B's ranging from Sue Anne's very early model (this car was in the Club when I
joined many years ago and was also owned then by a N.W. member) to Wendy Lansdell's
original BL and Irving's National Concours class winning BL to Mike Walsh's attractive
factory BGTV8; Duncan's GTV8 to Richard Ashley Jones appealing B but it was the
stunning black B of Chris and Vicki Wagstaff that was to win gold on this day in this
class.
In the modern TF class was John McCabe along with Bruce and Robyn Keogh; Bruce
Daly and Mark Dilger completed this class with their previous outright winning cars. In
the modern section it was Robyn Phillips who was the winner.
But it was congratulations to Mark and Angela for their outright victory.
The event was also well supported by those who just wanted to display their cars and
support the Car Club.
My thanks to Roy, Craig Large, Andrew Midgley, Susan Fraser, Margaret, Wayne Jessup
and the judges for your support.

Presidents Report
Like many of the attendees at this years AGM in Devonport, I left the meeting a little
bewildered. Yet again we had not filled all of the available positions on the committee. So
after having my ear chewed a bit I decided that I would accept the late nomination for
president of our club. A couple of other people also rallied and accepted a late call up and
I am now pleased to say that all of the positions are filled. For some of us this is a new experience to be on the state committee and we are lucky that we have some experienced
people to guide and mentor us. Thanks must go to the previous committee whose members
worked hard all year. We are now looking forward to the challenge and we have already
held our first meeting – so it’s just on with business as usual now.
Our north west members worked very hard to put on a great Saturday concourse show in
Devonport which was really well attended. By all accounts the Saturday evening dinner
was a great success so well done to them. Next year this event will be held in Launceston
and I know the northern centre members are already looking at venues to make it an
equally successful event.
As you are reading this it is obvious that you have received the latest magazine in the mail.
Our new editor John Frost has taken up the mantle and seems undaunted by the challenge,
which really is immense. John has received a lot of help and support from Andrew
Midgley for which I am sure our new Ed is very grateful.
Until next time,
Eamonn.
Ed Says
Thank you to all the contributors to the monthly magazine. As outlined in the presidents
report this is a new outing for some of us, while on the subject a personal thank you to
Andrew for a comprehensive handover no doubt the other new committee members will
be mentored in a like manner.
Hopefully more contributions will be forwarded in the near future, if you have felt like
saying something or putting items in the magazine feel free to pass every/anything on.
The cover story by Greg outlines the success of the concours as an event, pictures of that
and the annual dinner adorn the front cover and inner pages.
Seasons greetings and best wishes to all for the new year
ED.

There is still room for anyone wishing to join us in Adelaide, although I have heard that
choices on the Spirit around that time is reducing.

in both men’s and women’s styles and sizes.
If you have not already ordered your tops and would like to, then please contact Sue-Anne

Club Meeting Details Every Tuesday Night at 8pm

PAST EVENTS
12th November – Overnight stay at Mt Lloyd.
Threatening rain did not dampen our enthusiasm for this annual event. The shenanigans
started before we left the Civic Club with Herby thinking it was a 10am departure. Finding
nobody there at 10.10am he left for Mt Lloyd. The rest of us arrived at the appointed
11.00am (MG time) and waited till 11.30 for Herby. Thinking he had forgotten, we left for New Norfolk where we had pies and coffee at the Patchwork Café in Willow Court. We
arrived at our destination at1.00pm to find Herby already there with his car jacked up! He
must have thought he was still at the Baskerville raceway, knocking his exhaust pipe off
on the way down to the house. With a few bush tools coming to the fore we got him
underway again in no time.
Two chainsaws and a few able bodied men soon saw to it that we had sufficient firewood
for the mandatory campfire.
MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, December 2016
Page 13
Given that it was raining off and on, one of our members asserted that he could go into the
bush and collect some kindling and light a fire with one match and no paper, so having collected the required tea- tree branch he went about setting his fire. Greg supplied the
match and wondered if he needed the box as well! Having lit the match and applied it to
the kindling, it hit a twig and went out. He didn’t think it was fair that he failed because in
the old days the match would have flared more and not gone out and would have lit the
twig (matches are not what they used to be!). The experiment was deemed a failure and
the fire was lit with the third match. Not to be beaten the theory will be tested again next
year! Frank Manley produced a nice tribute for the feat on Tuesday night – not sure
whether to thank him or not.
As usual Herby cooked his side of beef for tea, while the rest of us had more mundane
fare.
Shane challenged Bob to a game of euchre and beat him four games to nil. Bob didn’t
think that was fair either because Shane was making it on the 7, 8 and 9 of spades when
Bob had a lone hand with diamonds. There has to be a law against it. Shane must have had
cards up his sleeve and I will be keeping an eye out next time.
The next drama occurred at 1.00am when the said member decided to sit on the throne in
the outside toilet using light from the verandah to see by. A light breeze began to close the door and he feared he may be left in the dark, but as luck or otherwise would have it, a
huge gust of wind came and reversed the swing of the door and took it completely off its
hinges and threw it against the wall. There is conjecture that he may have been trying his
luck with the matches again whilst sitting on the throne. Phil thought the crash was just
Shane wandering about after drinking his 3 bottles of red! The door was carefully placed
back in its place. Low and behold, the next morning Phil had to go and the door came off
in his hand. Nobody knew why of course and Phil thought he had broken the door. And,
yes Phil I found the switch for the hot water as I was locking up!
After the usual Mt Lloyd breakfast we all headed home in the pouring rain with a few
more stories to tell.
We wondered what our new recruit, Grant West, thought of the goings-on.
26th November – Annual Concours at Devonport. Several Southern Sub Centre members
made the trek to Devonport with a noggin and natter at the Golf Club, AGM at the RSL, dinner at the Bowls Club and breakfast again at the Golf Club. Peter Thorne was
successful winning a trophy for his immaculate TF and another club member came away
with the Clubman of the year trophy. Very unexpected! A good array of cars was on
display on the foreshore.

Club Meeting Details Last Wednesday night of the Month:
7.30 pm for meeting. VCCA Rooms,
67 Lawrence Vale Rd, Launceston
Postal Address P.O Box 682, Launceston, Tas 7250
It was a brilliant decision weeks earlier, before we knew the weather was going to break, to change the date from the wet and windy Sunday 13 November to a sun drenched blue
sky day on the 19th. So we all met all smiles at the Motor Museum for the MG run. But
hey, wait a minute, there was barely an M[G in site.
Getting all the attention, [ even Museum staff came out to look], was a metallic black
Volvo coupe with metal retractable hood, the operation of which was demonstrated, to
wild applause, several times by the proud owner. Distant second was an Audi sedan but at
least sported an open sun roof. Then came a gaggle of MX Fives of miscellaneous roof
types, some metal retractable, some soft, some without. I think I saw an ‘A’ hovering
reticently in the background.
Anyway we were all quite chummy and left for Longford then down the nicely
picturesque C520 to Campbell Town. The only excitement along the way was trying to pass silly lycra clad cyclists on the narrow winding country road, devoid of all line
markings. We needed a nerve settling coffee break in Campbell Town, choosing JJ’s
Bakery with it’s lovely outside verandah and lawn, rather than Banjos or Zepps.
MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, December 2016
Page 17
Refreshed, and on to the Lake Leake Hotel for lunch, the last couple of klm’s being on a
good gravel road, [oh, no, I hear !! – but there was really not much dissent]. It was a new
venue for most members. A terrific, no frills Aussie style pub in the bush. No attempt at
fake refurbishment. An old wood heater was burning away in the bar. No doubt visiting
fishermen and shack owners enjoy themselves on satty nights. There is an outside, sunny
area with benches and upholstered couches. Without thinking, most of us plonked into the
couches only to quickly self-eject realising rather belatedly they were the very private, sitting domain of the resident, and heavily moulting, doggie. A lot of hair-brushing
followed. The lunch menu was extensive, most members choosing from the wide ranging
$15 selection. I think the 25 or so meals suddenly on order tested the chef and kitchen’s
efficiency but I only recall one delay. When it arrived, a shepherds pie, it was judged
quite delicious.
Then a walk to the lake some 500 metres down the road, past good camping grounds
which appealed to our caravanserai, [ yes, I know all the big words] , and even saw shack
named Dilger.
So we happily meandered home in two’s and three’s mostly deciding on the main drag. Shame, though, about Mr Heinz. Jim.

Club Meeting Details Second Thursday night of the Month:
6.00 pm for meal and social evening.
Bridge Hotel, Forth
Hi to all,
November has been a busy month with the North west hosting the Concours, AGM and
Presentation dinner in Devonport. The proceedings kicked off on the Friday night with a
Nog”N”Natter at the Devonport Golf club and concluded with a farewell breakfast at the
same venue on Sunday morn.
Saturday dawned with humid overcast conditions with well over 30 cars on display or being judged.
The AGM saw the existing committee retire and those who renominated were elected. A
few positions were vacant but by the time the Presentation dinner came around, nearly all
positions had been filled.
Congratulations to those who put their hands up.
Congrats also go to those who were lucky enough to get a gong not only for the concours
but the perpetual trophy’s as well. Another great year of socialising and competition down
with a full year ahead to think of “how can I get my name on a trophy”. The answer is
easy — get out there and be a part of the happenings!
Christmas is fast approaching with the last of the social events happening. Our final Forth
pub night has gone along with our NW Christmas party at M & M’s. The last event on our
calendar was the combined North & NW get together at Port Sorell. More about these events in next months issue.
A final thank you to all of you who put your hand up to run an event, cook on the BBQ’s,
do the timing at the Motorkhana's, etc. Without you things just don’t get done.
My last commendation goes to Roy boy. MGB 73 has done a wonderful job as NW coord.
for the past couple of years. He certainly has big shoes to fill.
This is my last input as the NW co-ordinator. I am stepping down to concentrate on the
Club Captains job on the State committee.
Wendy & I wish everyone a happy and safe festive season and we look forward to seeing
you out with your MG’s next year.
“Zeds“ rule & “B” happy

For those that missed or to reminisce some of the concours ?
All Pre War, T and Y Type MG’s.
The most recent gathering of T and Y Type MGs and of course many other models of the
marque being the main event on the calendar, the Concourse this year held in Devonport
on the banks of the Mersey. Congratulations to this ‘pair’ of Ys, the often seen, always
immaculately presented special of Gary Perry and the fine Y Type example, recently
completed family sedan of Michael Smith.
The scrutiny of Terry Jeffrey’s TC by the judges is well de-tailed earning a Class second
place from the winning TF of Peter Thorne followed by Derek Holden’s TF. The two T
Type specials look mutually menacing, the TC taking the Class prize and the public
interest in all MGs is always a stand-out! And long time MG accomplice Jim Hooper is clearly taking notice of good advice from Rosemary. Congratulations to the Club and
organisers for a great display.
