Track

“Run Waitkoss run!” says Coach Kimble as I round the corner for the last 100m of my 400m dash.

Breathing heavy and legs burning, wanting to stop right there and pass out. Only a few more meters left.....and !nish!

My legs are sore, I feel like I’m completely out of breath and could just collapse, but I managed to !nish.

is is my life in track and !eld, the sport where our training is other people’s punishment. Some people would

say we are crazy or that I’m crazy for doing it just for fun. It may seem different but the rush of it is worth it all,

especially when you win. I have done track and !eld for three years straight, ever since 7th grade year at Spring Garden.

I never thought track would ever be something I’d like or ever even think about trying, but I ended up being convinced

by my own 7th grade gym teacher. I was a bit skeptical at the idea when he !rst mentioned it and even laughed at the

idea. As I thought about it more I decided to try it and prepared for the !rst practice that was happening next week.

When I showed up for the opening practice of the season I saw some of my friends there that were going to try

track with me and see how it goes. It made me feel a little better seeing them there and gave me more con!dence going

in. With the start of the !rst practice and on throughout the season I started to see my talents show that I didn’t know

I had in me. It started out small and progressively started showing more. I began placing in races either !rst, second or

third. I begin practicing even harder and tried to improve as much as I could. I placed in races that I never thought I

would ever do in my life; races such as the 400m dash and 200m dash were a couple of them. Since starting that !rst

practice and !rst race I have loved the sport and have been in it all these years.

Now that I have found the interest in the sport I have been working at it to get better and better; lifting

weights to get stronger and faster. I now do track and !eld for Benton as a freshman and hope to continue on with it

for the rest of my high school years in varsity races. is experience has made me learn that although I may think I

might not like or be able to do something but if I try it I’ll be able to !nd out for sure if I do or not and it has showed

me something that I love doing. I would have never known that I’d be good at it until I tried it. I pass this advice onto

others to just try something that you think you might be good at and you may like it just by the experience in the long

run, no pun intended.
