What do I disagree with, wish were different, would change, would expand on...? Why? What connections & expansions can I make from my experience? K&Ps Five Practices Model the way Inspire a Shared Vision Challenge the Process Enable Others to Act Encourage the Heart Challenge the Process (Practice 3) Discuss in a new group for each chapter: Reactions, thoughts, feelings Agree with, like, want to remember - most important points from both essentials & discussion, and from action steps Disagree with, would change, would expand on I will assign groups to brief us on at least two most important points from the two essentials and discussion at the first of the chapter - then all can discuss Other groups to brief us on at least two most important points from action steps - then all discuss Will take chapters one at a time Search for Opportunities by seeking innovative ways to change, grow, and improve Commitment 5, ch. 7 Seize the initiative Make challenge meaningful Innovate and create Look outward for fresh ideas Find meaningful challenges for yourself & for others Experiment and Take Risks by constantly generating small wins and learning from mistakes Commitment 6, ch. 8 Initiate incremental steps and small wins Learn from your experience Promote psychological hardiness in yourself and others Instr. 2, Risk-taking Propensity Reactions, thoughts? How important is risk taking for a leader? How to distinguish between good and dumb risks? Both ch. 7 & 8 encourage creativity and breaking mindsets, norms, patterns, and assumptions that limit us Enable Others to Act (Practice 4) For these two chapters: One group to brief us on at least two important points from essentials & discussion Another group to brief us on two important points from action steps Then, for each topic, 1-2 other groups have the assignment of having a constructive dialogue with the presenter - to ask probing questions and offer comments to deepen the content Foster Collaboration by promoting cooperative goals and building trust Commitment 7, ch. 9 Leadership is not a solo act Create a climate of trust Facilitate positive interdependence Support face-to-face interactions Strengthen Others by sharing power and discretion Commitment 8, ch. 10 Ensure self-leadership Provide choice Develop competence and confidence help others feel strong, able, valued Foster accountability Encourage the Heart (Practice 5) Recognize Contributions by showing appreciation for individual excellence Commitment 9, ch. 11 Focus on clear standards & expectations Expect the best (Pygmalion effect) Pay attention Link rewards with performance Personalize recognition Pygmalion Effect Can be self, producing self-fulfilling predictions Can be from or toward others Both sources can have powerful effects Think of examples: Negative Positive Celebrate Values & Victories by creating a spirit of community Commitment 10, ch. 12 Create a spirit of community, of shared values Set the example Tell the story Have enthusiasm and fun Passion-Compassion Game Read K & P p.375 Get into pairs One person selects & talks about a topic re which s/he feels passionately Other person plays compassionate role, encouraging expressiveness, listening actively, drawing forth enthusiasm at some length Switch roles Next Session Study K&P ch.13 & Web pieces on Visualization & Personal Best Presentation Enter remaining LPIs in scoring software before class next week, 4/27 Read p.1-2 of LPI Participants Workbook & skim some of the rest Bring questions about midterm First reflection paper due
