Thoughts on How to Write Vision Statements

The definition for Vision Statements is a sentence or short paragraph providing a broad, aspirational image of the future. A Vision is defined as an image of the future we seek to create.

Vision Statements therefore contain details of the future – its vision (the future plans with aims and objectives).

These types of Statements focus on tomorrow.

A Vision Statement needs to be short, concise, clear, vivid, and inspiring and focus on tomorrow.

Thoughts on How to WriteMission Statements

The best Mission Statements are highly readable and inspirational, but still answer the:

• Why does Florida Polytechnic exists?

• What is Florida Polytechnic going to do?

• For whom does Florida Polytechnic exist?

Another set of key questions:

• What are the opportunities or needs that Florida Polytechnic exists to address? (the purpose of the university)

• What is Florida Polytechnic doing to address these needs? (the business of the university)

• What principles or beliefs guide Florida Polytechnic’s work? (the values of the organization)
