America’s #1 Name in Farm, Ranch, and Rodeo Equipment for Fifty Years
Founded by Marvin Priefert in 1964, Priefert has grown into one of the largest farm, ranch and rodeo equipment manufacturers in the world. When Marvin built his first headgate in a one room shop on his farm, he had no idea that his first piece of ranch equipment would help revolutionize the livestock handling industry and go on to become the foundation of one of the most respected ranch equipment manufacturing companies in the business. Now in its third generation of leadership, Priefert is still family owned and operated. Its product offerings have expanded to include cattle, equine, poultry, canine, and rodeo lines, making Priefert a one stop shop for all your farm, ranch, and rodeo needs.

Dorothy Childs is an RN as well as a certified PATH, Int’l. and 4-H Therapeutic Riding and Driving Instructor. She and her husband own Home Helpers, non-medical home care. Dorothy has been the instructor for the Eaton Special Riding Volunteer Association since 1986. Years ago, she was a Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Master. Dorothy has been a 4-H leader for over 20 years, leading projects such as Horses, Chickens, Dogs, Clowning, Sewing, Cake Decorating, etc. She was superintendent of Performing Arts of Eaton County for 10 years. The last two years, Dorothy has been an announcer for the Horse Pleasure Classes at the Eaton County 4-H Fair. Currently, she is President of the Michigan Horse Drawn Vehicle Association. It seems where ever Dorothy goes, there is an opportunity to “help out”, including the Michigan Open Horse Championship Show in Shiawassee County, 2013, and the ShowMe Show in December here at the pavilion. Dorothy has chaired the Eaton Special Riding Horse Show in Charlotte for the past 20+ years. The last two years, Dorothy helped organize the Eaton Special Riding Ride-A-Thon. My very favorite volunteer event was the World Equestrian Games in 2010 at the Kentucky Horse Park. A second favorite has been volunteering twice to help VOSH International with vision clinics on Dominica, a small island in the Caribbean. My current volunteer job is organizing the children’s area here at the MHC Expo. My motto: “Ask a busy person if you want to get something done”. My advice is that helping others brings immeasurable joy to the heart!

BILLY CREGO
DICK & CONNIEKLEINHARDT
DOROTHY CHILDSBilly Crego is a fixture with the MI Draft Horse Breeders Association. His start in the Draft horse world was as a groom for “Doc” Bramer at the old Lansing Dairy Co. for nine years. Later he spent 33 years with Heatherwood / McDonald Dairy delivering milk. He also bought the last pair of Percheron Mares Lansing Dairy had. But it is not just driving that has Billy hooked. He also rode with the Clinton County Sheriff's Posse for 45 years. Billy was the driving force behind the creation of the Michigan
Great Lakes International Draft Horse Show and Pulls, the only event of its kind in the world. He also was instrumental in moving the show from the old State Fairgrounds in Detroit to its present location at the MSU Livestock Pavilion, in East Lansing. Billy was assistant chairman for the MI Great Lakes International for 26 years and ringmaster of the Live Oak Invitational Draft Horse Hitch Show in Ocala, FL as well. Billy was the recipient of the Michigan Draft Horse Breeders Association Service to The Industry Award in 2014. Billy has blessed us with powerful renditions of the National Anthem. Our deepest thanks and appreciation to you, a true equine industry Catalyst.
Dick and Connie Kleinhardt are tireless trail warriors for Michigan equine riders. In 2008, Dick and Connie organized a varied group of equestrians to work with legislators to create the “Right to Ride” Act for Michigan equestrians. At that time, equestrians were represented in trail subcommittees by delegates from non-motorized organizations. So much changed when Dick and Connie convinced equestrians to become pro-active and unite to voice their needs on the trails and in campgrounds. Since the start back in 2008, there now exists a network of equestrians, legislators and the various branches of the Department of Natural Resources that share ideas, and plan and build together as a team. Thank you so much for all your steadfast perseverance to make Michigan trails and camps “horse friendly”.
To see the wind’s power, the rain’s cleansing and
the sun’s radiant life, one need to onlylook at the horse.

Steve Shaver is probably best known for being an equine dentist, but he is also a soft hearted volunteer that just can't say “No” to a child and his/her horse. He has volunteered to do speaking engagements for 4-H and before you could blink, he was fixing all the ponies with a big smile on his face! Steve is a believer in sedation free care and he has a rapport with his clients, both horse and people, that is easy going and gentle. Due to health issues, Steve is no longer able to work in dentistry, but we thank him for his dedication to equestrians, horses and volunteerism. You are a real Catalyst.

STEVE SHAVER ANNASYLVESTER
Anna Sylvester, MDNR Fields Operation Section Chief in the Northern Parks and Recreation Department, has worked tirelessly wi th the Michigan Equine Community and various branches of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to develop a process for moving a project from “Huh....wouldn’t it be nice if…” to reality. Anna is a pro-active thinker when it comes to problem solving. She sits on the Equine Trails Subcommittee, as well as the Pigeon River Country Equestrian Committee striving to enable multiple groups of users to enjoy the wonderful waters, forests, and byways of Michigan. We thank you, Anna, for all your efforts to make Michigan accessible by horseback.
The Detroit Police Department’s Mounted Police Division, one of our country’s oldest, was established in 1893. At its peak, the Division had 5 barns, 80 officers and more than 60 horses. Today, DPD’s Mounted Police operate from one barn in Palmer Park, MI and have 5 horses. They patrol 365 days a year, weather permitting. Look for DPD’s Mounted Police at all of Detroit’s major sporting, cultural, family events and parades. They also patrol Detroit’s neighborhoods, its universities, Midtown, Downtown, Eastern Market, major parks and shopping centers. Mounted Police demonstrations can be arranged by schools, churches and other organizations.

Here at Eastern Upper Peninsula Wood Shavings, or UP Shavings for short, we sell 100% all-natural, premium quality wood shavings made from spruce and balsam grown right here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Our shavings are dried naturally with a forced air-dried biomass burner. The burner is fueled from the by-product of the shavings, which means they do not contain any chemicals, such as propane or natural gas residue.

Levi D. Beechy was born and raised in Gladwin, MI on his parent’s farm. He drove his first horse at the age of 4 and trained his first horse at the age of 14. Levi has always had a love for horses. He started working with horses because he wanted to change the way people looked at horsemanship. Levi wants to help people and their horses become a better team. When he was 25 years old he was fortunate enough to open his own training facility. Now he owns Levi’s Training & Boarding Center. He also got invited to start working with rescue horses to further them in their life. The rescues were with him for one hundred days and at the end of that time he competed in three different courses with the horse. Levi did this for four years and did well. Just last year he came across the Mustang Makeover. The application process was very detailed. Levi got it sent in and had to wait about a month to hear from the BLM. He got word the first week of May, and the mustang was at his barn the same month. He had one hundred days to work with the horse. At the end of the hundred days Levi went to Fort Worth, Texas to compete against 34 other trainers. With all of Levi’s training and patience with the mustang it paid off and he won 8th place. Levi plans to apply again this year to get a mustang and to compete in 2015. His goal is “Helping you and your horse become a better team.”

Saginaw Valley Equine Clinic
Dr. Brad Cumper earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine from MSU. His specific areas of interest include sports medicine and embryo transfer. He and his wife, Cami, have two daughters, Isabel and Peyton. What do you do at SVEC? I am one of the veterinarians, and I breed mares, collect and ship stallions, perform elective surgeries, and I look at quite a few lame horses. What is your favorite part of your job? A lot of veterinarians get into the business because they want to help animals, I've found the best part of my job is helping people accomplish their dreams. What has been your most difficult case at SVEC? No doubt, it was a horse named Jack. I choke up just thinking about him. He was the most beautiful bay Warmblood you have ever seen. He was big boned and strong, athletic and nimble. He had this soft look in his eye that spoke to you. His owner had several horses, but he was the golden child, he was special to her. He was well on his way to a career in dressage when a foot abscess soon turned into a coffin bone infection. He spent weeks in our clinic suffering from his ailment. He was so big, kind and gentle. I ended up euthanizing Jack at his farm, after countless treatments, laminitis and a colic surgery. Jack was gone, and what I had left was a memory of crying like a baby with his owner. What made Jack the most difficult case was the unwavering trust and faith his owner had in me as I cared for Jack.

HEIDI McLAUGHLINK.I.C.K. Your Fear of Horses Myler Bits,
creator/ownerFrom the time she began to talk, Heidi McLaughlin has been crazy about horses. All Heidi ever wanted to do was ride one. Sadly, her first experience in the saddle at eight years old was anything but wonderful when her grandmother’s horse ran away with her and scared her half to death. While her passion was still there, the terrifying experience left her with a paralyzing fear of the creatures that she loved so much; a fear that would take more than half her lifetime to overcome. While her parents didn’t share in her passion for horses, her husband, Pete did. And after their three children were grown, he recognized that his wife’s obsession was not going to go away and so he gave her his unconditional support as she bought and sold horse after horse searching for the perfect match. But Heidi didn’t know at the time that her fear was so deep-seeded that no horse on earth would ever be right for her until she first dealt with her fear. “K.I.C.K. Your Fear of Horses” was written by Heidi as a result of her quest to find her confidence with horses but not finding many resources to help her. This book examines different types of horse fear as well as quoting the advice from many accomplished experts.
DALE MYLER
The creators of Myler Bits - Ron, Dale and Bob Myler, offer a philosophy behind each of their bits, which are designed to establish communication between the rider's hands and the horse with the least amount of resistance. The bit is a communication tool. To effectively communicate with your horse, your horse must be relaxed. If your horse is resistant, your horse is not effectively receiving your message. The key to properly bitting any horse is to find the mouthpiece the horse can relax into with the hands that are holding it.
Myler Bits cover a wide range of bitting needs, from start to finish, for Western, English and driving disciplines. Sizes include minis, light horses, mules and draft horses.

KIM ROSS KIM VEENSTRA
I was lucky enough to have been raised with horses, I was a vet technician and learned to shoe horses! My husband Steve and I have camped with our horses for many years and our travels have taken us to many different states. I've ridden across the state of Michigan with the Michigan Trail Riders Association (MTRA) multiple times including the Kris Kross, where I learned even more about camping. I've given Camping with your horse clinics for Pontiac Lake Horseman's Association, Oakland County and MTRA. My goal is to keep learning so I can help others enjoy this great outdoor activity!
I have had a passion and love for horses my whole life. My mom actually bought my first horse when I was 11 years old. Later in life I purchased a horse that had extreme trust and fear issues. I started studying horse behavior and found if I used obstacles the correct way, our trust was improving. He was trusting me as a leader because I was not pushing him when he was scared, I was actually doing the opposite…retreating. When he was calm and confident that’s when I would ask for more. I was helping some friends with their horses and their relationship improved. That’s when I started the business Mobile Confidence Course. The idea behind it is I come to you with the scary obstacles. MCC Clinics create partnerships based on trust and respect. I teach not to push when the horse is scared, how to read your horse, having patience, know when to ask for more and when to step back and retreat!

Gary & Deb Wright both grew up in the Thumb on small farms. They have always enjoyed riding and horse related activities. In 2008 they bought an apple orchard and turned it into the Orchard Arena. No more apples!! Now it's all sorting and penning with a horse and tack auction the 3rd Saturday of every month. Team sorting has become one of their best loved activities. Lots of fun for all riders, from novice to pro! Ranch Sorting and Team Penning are sporting events involving moving cattle on horseback by rider teams. Created to preserve the traditional skills of working cow horses and handlers, penning and sorting challenge both riders and horses to compete in a timed event, move and pen specific cattle from a herd.
