MEET 1 focuses on reducing the emissions of CO2, a greenhouse gas. The solutions in this category consist of MHI's world-class fuel-saving UEC Eco-engine, WHRS, hybrid MET turbochargers, the MAP Mark-W propeller and ORC. These technologies can be used to improve the thermal efficiency of plants by up to 20%. MEET 1 technologies contribute to reducing fuel oil consumption, as well as enabling substantial cuts in CO2 emissions. It can be used as a solution for slow steaming which become important in the market.

UEC Eco-engines are Japan's only diesel engines for large ships that are developed entirely in-house. These engines were developed in response to the global tightening of emissions controls. They achieve the world's highest level of thermal efficiency through optimized engine performance, which is enabled through the electronic control of fuel injection, exhaust valve actuation, and startup and cylinder lubrication. These engines are contributing to the reduction of NOx and CO2 emissions.

WHRS is a marine waste heat recovery system that carries out highly efficient power generation onboard ships through effective utilization of energy harnessed from the marine engines' exhaust gas. Exhaust gas energy is effectively recovered through the optimal control of the combination of exhaust gas and steam turbines, lowering a ship's fuel costs.

PROJECT MEET (Mitsubishi Marine Energy & Environment Technical Solution-System)

is the cornerstone of our ongoing solution proposal activity to meet the energy and environmental needs of today's marine machinery and engine market. We will achieve this with the technology of tomorrow.

PROJECT MEET is divided into following three major solution categories

Reducing CO2

MEET 2 introduces two cutting-edge technologies, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). These two technologies drastically reduce NOx and SOx, which are two common sources of air pollution. SCR and EGR itselves reduces NOx by more than 80% and EGR with scrubber reduces SOx by more than 98%. These solutions will enable compliance with IMO Tier III regulations without significantly affecting the performance of the main engine.

MEET 2 Reducing NOx and SOx

MEET 3 is a solution for using LNG as fuel. The solution involves the use of an ultra steam turbine (UST) to boost thermal efficiency making LNG a more cost-effective choice. MHI is also developing a gas-injection UE engine for next-generation large ships.

Generator driven by thermal dischargeMEET 1

The compact hybrid turbocharger has a built-in power generator so that it not only supplies supercharged air to the engine but also uses rotational energy to generate electrical power at the same time. It contributes to the improvement of fuel efficiency by supplying all electrical power necessary while at sea.

Turbochargers

Please see Page 64 for further details.

In the past, engine cooling water below 100°C was dumped into the ocean. ORC turbines are compact power generation systems that enable electrical power recovery and power generation using a heat transfer medium with a boiling point lower than that of water, like those used in air conditioners.

ORC 2% Less fuelconsumption

Organic Rankine Cycle

Please see Page 64 for further details.

Electric Assist Turbochargers

The electric assist turbocharger is a turbocharger that incorporates a compact electric motor that assists the driving of the turbocharger. This provides optimization of plant efficiency when a ship is operating under slow steaming, enabling equal or better performance than an auxiliary blower while consuming little power.

TurbochargersVTI 2% Less fuelconsumption

Variable Turbine Inlet

Please see Page 63 for further details.

By adjusting the turbine nozzle's inlet area through which exhaust gas passes, the VTI turbocharger increases scavenging air pressure under low loads, thereby improving the performance of the main engine. It can be retrofitted to improve fuel-efficiency of ships in service. (VTI: Variable Turbine Inlet)

SPECIFIC FUEL OIL CONSUMPTION (SFOC)

e.g. 7 UEC 80 LSE - Eco - B 1 - EGR

UE Engine has added the fuel optimized “Low-SFOC” version to engine line-up in order to bring maximum benefit to customers. It can be lower specific fuel oil consumption than conventional “Standard” version by changing some engine parts and optimising electronically controlled system. The figures of specific fuel oil consumption for “Standard” version and “Low-SFOC” version are respectively described in this booklet.

In addition, UE Engine has also improved part-load and low-load SFOC by introducing tuning methods such as LLO (Low Load Optimize), MET-VTI turbocharger (refer to page 65), turbocharger cut-out system and so on. Details can be separately discussed in each individual project according to customer's requirements.

With extracting an exhaust gas partially from main engine to economizer, this system realized more amount of power generation by increasing economizer steam amount and temperature. The power generation amount is 1.5 to 1.8 times more than Eco-TG System (without gas bypass).

Eco-TG system (with gas bypass)

The exhaust gas partially extracts from main engine exhaust gas manifold then it drives an Exhaust Gas Power Turbine, which is connected to steam turbine with SSS Clutch. The power generation amount is 2.4 to 2.8 times more than Eco-TG System (without gas bypass). In case the STG power generation exceeds an electric demand in the vessel, the surplus power can assist the propeller shaft through shaft motor to reduce the main engine fuel consumption.

STG (Super Turbo Generating) system

Exhaust gas extracted from the main engine is used to drive the power turbine generator, eliminating the need for a large exhaust gas economizer, steam turbine, and vacuum condenser. The PTG system is compact and can be retrofitted.

PTG (Power Turbine Generating) system

This is a conventional system which has been applied to the Turbine Generators currently in service. All exhaust gas after Turbo-charger is led to economizer and then drive the generator turbine by steam generated in the economizer.

Features

MAP (Mitsubishi Advanced Propeller) fulfils the strong demand for energy saving and habitability of ships. MHI-MME designs most suitable propeller blade for each ship, based on customer's specification, using accumulated technical knowhow and a lot of experience in shipbuilding.

MAPMAP Mark-W supplies still more efficiency, while maintaining the cavitation performance. In the design of propellers, not only higher efficiency but also lower propeller-induced vibratory forces is recognized to be the most important. MAP Mark-W propellers employs cutting-edge fluid technology and can be used in any type of ship. The MAP Mark-W is ideal for retrofitting and improves propeller efficiency and fuel consumption, leading to lower operating costs and a lower impact on the environment. MHI-MME is capable to manufacture up to is 12.0 m in dia and 100 tons in weight.

Fig. 1 Fuel saving efficiency in each design condition

Development Concept

Used in Combination with Slow SteamingThrough a design that matches slow steaming needs, the Mark-W can improve fuel efficiency by between 3% and 6% (when designed for 85-70% MCR conditions). Taking the following MCR conditions as examples for a 6,300TEU container ship installed with a MAP propeller, fuel consumption can be decreased as follows (Fig. 1) through the installation of a Mark-W propeller: (Case 1) 100% MCR = 3.0%, (Case 2) 85% MCR = 4.0%, and (Case 3) 70% MCR = 5.0%. The amounts of fuel saved in these cases are shown in Fig. 2. By designing a propeller that matches actual operation, it is possible to achieve fuel savings of up to between $300,000 and $500,000 per year, for example, when operating at 50% engine load.

Economic EfficiencyImproving propeller efficiency negatively impacts cavitation performance. However, with the Mark-W, the modified shape of the blade tips enables improved propeller efficiency without sacrificing cavitation margin. While fuel efficiency is enhanced by approx 2% as compared with conventional MAP propellers. Furthermore, the propeller weight and moment of inertia have been reduced by 3%.
