firehouse in Grant and a church in Fremont.

We had a hard time connecting on the

or any other details about the projects. I

finally sent her an e-mail with the following

info: Preservation Briefs, Sec of Int

Historic Resource Council Committee Meeting Phone Conference

October 26, 2016 Noon Attending Ken Chapski Suzanne Bayer Dave Varney Karen Nagher I. Discussed the upcoming Webinar to address lead contamination issues and reporting issues. Registrations show that the webinar will be fairly well attended. HRC committee also discussed what areas need to be covered. Further discussion included what HRC is going to take on in the near future to hopefully ensure compliance. We hope to work with Education to accomplish a result that means our members and workshop attendees are well informed and currrent on lead, asbestos and mold contamination and the requirements. HRC committee should be a repository for information on this topic and will be able to point to existing MHPN informational pieces and respond to other issues that need addressing. 2. House Parties: We reviewed past parties and what we'd like to change to make future events more relevant. We talked about tagging on to future Fall Fundraisers as we did in Coldwater. The committee will also look for opportunities to visit newer developments and strive to locate them in areas other than Detroit when possible. We are actively working on one tentative for summer 2017. 3. Begin work on the mailer in November. Reviewing inserts currently to update and maybe reduce in size. Dave and Cheryl will make sure our database version is current and ready to use. No new business. Next Meeting on Wed. December 7 at 12:30.

The 22nd Annual Fall Benefit took place at the historic c.1920 Merchant & Mechanics Bank – “Bank Suey” - in Hamtramck on Saturday, October 1, 2016, from 5:30 PM – 9:00 PM, with an optional 1-hour walking tour of Hamtramck beforehand. Here are our statistics:

• Cash Income $26,037.70 - Expenses $2,271.27 = Cash Net $23,766.43 • Cash Net Goal of $20,000 was exceeded by 19% • Income $16,800.00 Cash gift income

$3,087.70 Registration $2,950.00 Live Auction $2,400.00 Field Reps $715.00 Silent Auction $85.00 Marketplace

• Expenses $1,012.00 Food, Beer, Wine $759.27 Printing, bonds, incidentals $500.00 Rental

• Attendance was 76 guests with 34 paid guests and 42 comp’d guests who were donors, volunteers, and staff. While 98 had been re-registered and there were 5 walk-ins, there were 27 no-shows.

• Analysis: While this was not our largest turn-out with 76 guests (Largest: 155, 2007, Skillman Branch of Detroit Public Library), it came close to our largest gift total (Largest: $17,025, 2015, Broderick Tower) and expenses were our second-to-lowest (Lowest: $1,543, 2011, Virgil Carr Cultural Center). In all, this year was our 4th most profitable in terms of cash net (Most profitable: $29,974, 2009, Riverside Arts Ctr).

The committee provided debriefing comments to be added to others that have come in: • The walking tour was well received, especially because the leader took them through

some non-traditional spaces – i.e. the alleys. This was taken in stride because we had forewarned walkers of the route and also made the evening “business casual.”

• We started setting up about 2 hours earlier than usual. This made it one of the more comfortable set-ups with plenty of time and enough volunteers.

• The Marketplace should have been more visible to increase sales. People simply didn’t see it in the furthest corner of the space.

• We got great comments about the food and its pairings with some interesting beers and wines. On the other hand, the caterers were all very casual leading up to the evening. While we had plenty of time to cover errors, it was disconcerting to have one of them, for example, arrive with only half of what was ordered.

• There were many favorable comments about the venue, no one expressing that it was yet too much a work-in-progress.

• Having the entire Shelton Family there was viewed as a big plus. Thinking about 2017, the Committee would like to return to the Dearborn Art Space and see if they’ll be ready to host us. There is also renewed interest in the Scarab Club which is more aggressively reaching out to the community to let people know it’s there. Conduct '17 Conference Planning – 35%

• All Abstracts were submitted for accreditation by the November 1 deadline. • $10,000 in support from SHPO/MSHDA has been received. • Solicitation mailing to over 1,500 donor prospects was mailed October 21.

“Imagine the Power of Partnerships” is our 37th annual conference in Emmet County Wednesday-Saturday, May 17-20, 2017; Robinson and Kreger are Co-Managers. Crooked Tree Arts Center. There were 32 Abstracts for 8 tours and 24 sessions submitted by the November 1 deadline for accreditation. Kreger was in Petoskey again October 24-25 to get photographs with Fall colors; between Robinson’s and Kreger’s photos, and others coming in from planning group members, we have a great selection. The contract with North Central Michigan College is close to finished; it offers good pricing for our space, food, AV, etc. After getting estimates for our tour needs from 5 bus companies, we have chosen one and are working through details; transportation costs in this popular tourist region are high. We have received our first major gift, that being the $10,000 from SHPO/MSHDA. The gift solicitation mailing to over 1,500 donor prospects was mailed Friday, October 21; Kreger has received the first inquiries. Participate in ’17 MSHDA Conference Planning – 35%

• Our abstract including the Capitol Theater in Flint and Holy Family Orphanage in Marquette was accepted.

• We have been asked to prepare an additional abstract including Bank Suey in Hamtramck and Fire in Kalamazoo, two community gathering and event spaces in historic buildings.

The Fund Development Committee is representing the MHPN on the planning committee for MSHDA’s annual Building Better Communities Conference to be held Monday–Wednesday, May 1-3, 2017, in Lansing. Our Abstract including restoration of the Capitol Theater in Flint as performance, office, and community space, and of the Holy Family Orphanage in Marquette as subsidized and market rate downtown housing, was chosen. Kreger has been asked to prepare another abstract to include Alissa Shelton from Bank Suey in Hamtramck, and Allison Kennedy from Fire in Kalamazoo; both speakers from these community gathering and event spaces in historic buildings are willing to participate. Coordinate 3 House Parties to Net $1,500 – 33%

• Planning for a second House Party for 2016 at Salt Springs Brewery in Saline has been delayed to January or February in the new year.

Dotson continues her work on a House Party to be hosted by MY Preservation at Salt Springs Brewery in Saline. The event plan includes a tour of the brewery, which is housed in an historic downtown church. Dinner may be chosen by guests from pre-selected entrees taken from the Salt Springs menu and include a choice of two craft beers. Registration cost is planned at $45/person comprising $25 for food and drink + $20 MHPN gift. This will perhaps serve as a membership event: buy a membership, get a craft beer. Between the Brewery owners needing to focus on their new business, construction on Michigan Avenue in Saline, and Dotson moving to Charlevoix, the event has been moved into the new year.

Conduct a Mid-Year 2015 Gift Solicitation to net $500 – met 64% of goal Conduct a Mid-Year 2016 Gift Solicitation to net $500 – 50%

Committee Activities:

● Assist the board in developing the annual work plan. ● Maintain a membership database that is current, not only so the organization knows the

number of its members, but so membership size and distribution around the state can be used during advocacy and outreach activities, so members can be tapped to speak-out on preservation issues in their communities, so the number of participants in MHPN programming can be supportive of grant applications, etc.

● Following an established timeline, conduct first, second, third, and fourth quarter invoicing, including Commission and Organization invoicing, so the current member population is given every opportunity to maintain its membership in good standing with the MHPN.

● On a regular basis, return to those with lapsed memberships to make a special appeal to have them renew.

● Set annual goals for membership increases that are challenging to the board and staff but also attainable.

● Coordinate, as per the Board Expectations, that each board member shall secure at least 10 members each year.

● From time to time, review the MHPN Membership print materials to assure they reflect current programming and accomplishments that is engaging to new and renewing members.

● Assure that the opportunity to join the MHPN is presented at every opportunity – i.e. as part of registration for the Annual Statewide Preservation Conference, at gatherings of our peer organizations, at welcome activities for graduate students, etc.

● Make good use of complimentary memberships as a means to introduce prospective members to the MHPN and, after their complimentary membership is through, have them join on their own; as a way to keep legislators aware of the work of the MHPN; as a means to say thank-you to those who have provided services to the MHPN; etc.

● Be alert to special promotional opportunities that can build membership – i.e. holiday gift memberships, membership mailings to owners of properties newly listed on the National Register of Historic Places, student memberships, etc.

● Utilize electronic means by which to introduce prospective new members to the MHPN, such as E-Blasts, the organization’s social networking site, the MHPN website, the website and ListServs of others, etc.

● Safeguard the membership database such that it is not used for any purpose other than activities addressed in the Annual MHPN Work Plan.

Yearly Work Plan Maintain and update membership database Conduct regular invoicing/membership renewals Track volunteer hours

MY Preservation November Report

Prepared by Joe Frost The capacity of MY Preservation is continuing to grow. Since last month, we have created an

Instagram account, created a logo, and have started planning for the Rust Belt Takeover in

Detroit.

In addition to our Facebook presence, we are now on Instagram. This will assist in reaching out

to a broader audience, and provide content for Facebook and future social media outlets.

Currently, we have 42 followers on Instagram. This following expected to grow over time. We

are having conversations with a popular Detroit Instagramer to plan an “Instagram Meet-up.”

This will utilize Instagram to gather Instagram users to network and talk preservation.

The Rust Belt Coalition of Young Preservationists, is the broad YP movement across the Rust

Belt States. Their recent “Rust Belt Takeover” event took place in Cincinnati. Unfortunately, due

to schedule conflicts representatives from MY Preservation were unable to attend. However, we

are in conversations with our Rust Belt Coalition partners to bring a “takeover” to Detroit. The

Page 34: MHPN Executive Committee Minutes...Nov 04, 2016  · Letters and reports in process. Respond to inquiries about potential easements: ... seeking Peter Brink mentoring grant . NTHP

date will be the weekend of September 30, 2017. What is a “Rust Belt Takeover?” It’s similar to

a mini conference, but not as formal. We will host networking opportunities, tours, and instill a

greater appreciation of preservation within Detroit. We have not yet, but will reach out to our

local partners within the city to build the capacity of the event. Stay tuned for more details as

they develop.

We have consulted with a Michigan based graphics designer to develop a professional logo.

The results can be seen above. This logo exemplifies our commitment to be a state-wide

approach to the Young Preservation movement. Now that we have some basics underway we

are working to develop our formal work plans for the coming year.
