GREAT BAY St M aarten (Wednesday July 25 2012)-On the Friday July the 202012 a graduation ceremony was held at the Science Complex of Miami Dade College North Campus school ofJustice

On that afternoon at 1500 hrs the 5 officers from StMaarten were officially certified as Community Police Officers At the opening the flags ofStMaarten and American Flags were presented by the school ofJustice honor guards Shortly thereafter the StMaarten and American Anthems were Slillg Welcoming words were given by the director ofMiami Dade school ofJmtice Dr Hector Garcia

The Invocation was given by Major Helen Romeo-Christina There were also welcoming remarks made by Dr Jose A Vicente president of the Miami Dade school ofjustice North campus acknowledge the presence ofThe Minister OfJustice ofStMaarten the Honorable Roland Dlillcan

During the ceremony speeches was given by the Honorable Minister ofjustice ofStMaarten Mr Roland Duncan He congratulated the graduates for achieving their goals The Mllrister also thanked all the partners who made it possible that all the officers could be graduated on that day

Speeches were also given by the Head ofthe lUufOlm Division here on St Maalien the Commissioner ofPolice Mr Carl John and by the chief ofpolice ofMiami Gardens Mr Matthew Boyd

Major Felix N Richards gave an uplifting speech on behalfof the graduation group Shortly after the presentation ofcertificates was done by Dr H Garcia

Just before the closing remarks by DrH Garcia a benediction was done by Major Ethelwoldus S Josepha infonned acting police spokesman inspector Quentin Rogers in a release

More than a dozen Asian and Pacific Islander American

athletes will represent Team USA at the Summer Olympic

Games in London and se-eral more will serve as backshy

ups or replacements The competitors will join hundreds of

fellow Americans in their quest to reign in their respecti-e

sports and bring home the gold

Below are Asians and Pacific Islander Americans who are

qualified to compete in lhe 2012 Olympics

Nathan Adrian

Swimming

Mrian of Bremerton Wash 24 began swimming at lhe

age of 5 after seeing his brother and sister take up the

sport Adrians mother who was born in Hong Kong is a nurse for Ihe Bremerton School District and his falher is

a retired nuclea r engineer Adrian won gold when he swam in the 4100 meter freestyle relay at the 2008

Olympics in Beijing He will compete in the 100-meterfreestyle and 4 x 100-meterfreesty1e relayevents In

London Adrian holds a pre-med degree from the UniversityofCalifornia Berkeley and hopes to one day

become a doctor

Howard Bach

Badminton

Bach was born in Vietnam in 1979 and came to the United States when he was 3 By the encouragement of his

father he began playing badminton ata local YMCA in San Francisco as a child His father also an avid player

served as Bachs Iraining coach over the next decade Bach s talenls earned him a spol to compele in the 2004

Olympics in Athens One year later he and TonyGunawan won the mens doubles tiUe at the 2005 World

Badminton Championship The victory marked the first time an American badminton team ever medaled at a

world championship In 2008 Bach and another partner became lhe first US badminton team to reach an

Olympics quarterfinal Bach reunites with Gunawan this summerto compete in the mens doubles eventin

London

Kayla Bashore-Smedley

Field Hockey

South Korean-born Bashore-Smedleygrew up in Shoemakersville Pa and currenUylives in Chula Vista Calif

She first picked up a hockey stick when she was 15 when a high school coach suggested that she give lhe sport

a try Her skills caught the attention of college recruiters and earned her a scholarship to Indiana University

where she led the school to its first-ever NCAAtoumament Bashore-Smedleywas also named the 2005 Big Ten

Player of the Year and became the schools sole First Team AJ-American That same year she also completed a

degree in biology and chemistry In 2008 Bas hare-Smedley was part of the US womens field hockey Olympics

leam which finished eighth overall This summer she joins a roster of 16 women who will compete for the gold

in London

Lindsey Berg

Volleyball

Berg began honing her volleyball skills on lhe island of Oahu Hawaii where she grew up In 1998 Berg

graduated from Punahou High School in Honolulu alma mater of Pres ident Barack Obama She went on to play

volleyball for the University of Minnesota There she led the program to its first Sweet 16 appearance and

became a three-time All-Big Ten Player of the Year Berg competed in her ftfst Olympics in Athens in 2004 where

the US womens team took fifth place She took home a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing The

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates Buffett is so fond of her that he has inlgtited her to play against himselfand

shareholders at his companys annual meetings Hsings father who grew up in Taiwan and her mother who

grew up in China are also algtid table tennis players No US competitor has ever medaled in table tennis at the

only fencer in the world to achieve indilgtidual podium finis hes at the Senior Junior and Cadet World

Championships She is the youngest mem ber of the 2012 US Olympic fenCing team

Miyas hiro will com pete in her first Olympic games in London this sum mer as Team USA seeks to turn ils 2008

silver medal into 2012 gold She will serve as the teams reserve libero a defensive speCialist position

Miyashiro is of Japanese Chinese Hawaiian Irish and German descent and comes from a familyofathletes

Her mother was an All-American college ltllleyball player for the Universityof Hawaii and her father was a college

football player Miyashiro grew up in Honolulu and graduated from Kalani High School She later attended the

University of Washington in Seattle where she holds the universitys record for career digs She graduated in

2009 with a degree in interdisciplinary visual arts

Ross 15 is the youngest person on Team USAs gymnastics roster She was born in Honolulu and currently

lives in Aliso v1ejo Calif Ross who has the nickname Mighty Mouse is a two-time US junior allmiddotaround

ctlampion She made her senior international debut at the Pacific Rim Championships in March where she

finis hed second all-around Two weeks later she won all-around gold at the City ofJesolo Trophy com petition in

Italy Ross earned the second-highest scores on the uneven bars at the 2012 Olympic trials Her father is

Japanese and Black and her mother is of Filipino and Puerto Rican descent

Sandra Uptagrafft

Singaporean-born Uptagrafft will make her Olym pic debut in London this sum mer as she represents the United

States in the womens 25-meter sport pistol and 1 O-meter air pistol events Her husband Eric will make his

second Olym pic appearance as a member of the US rine team Sandra is a Petty Officer 1 st Class in the United

States Navy Reserves and is also a Microsoft certified systems engineer She and her husband live in Los

Angeles

Wang is the sole American that will compete in womens badminton at Ihe London Olympics set to compete in

singles The Southern California native typically partners with her sister Iris but Iris did not make the Olym pic

trials The duo has succeeded around the globe in other com petitions winning third place at the 2012 Polish

Open International Badminton Cham pions hips and silver at the 2011 Pan American Games Last year Wang

won the 2011 Peru International badminton championships in womens singles Wang is a biology major at the

UniversityofCalifornia Los Angeles She speaks Mandarin

Wang of Houston 20 is the sole mens table tennis competitor that will represent the United States at the

London Olym pies He will compete in the singles events Wang won the mens singles com petition at the 2010

US Nationals and placed third in 2011 Although he plays with his right hand he is naturally ambidextrous The

Chinese American was introduced to table tennis when his dad brought him to clubs to watch his brother play

Para enero de 2010 aplic31ms al Premio Nacional de 1a Juventud y resultamos primera finalista en e1 regl6n Cultura~ condicion que nos concedfa la oportunidad para realizar lID curso de liderazgo en el Miami Dade College Nos alegramos mucho con la notieia sin embargo nos avisaron a prrneipios de lTlclyo de 201 0 para entregdr e1 pasaporte pero en ese momenta nos encontnlbamos en La Rabana Cuba

Y dado que estariamos en e1 pais los primeros dias de junio y el viaje era para julio quedaron de aeuerdo en que a nuestro regreso se resolveria todo pero no fue as~ al final el primer grupo se fue a Miami y a nosotros nos dejaron para un segw1do grupo del que a la recha no hemos tenido noticias

Nuestro pasaporte nos 10 devolvieron en agosto de 2010 sin penas ni gloria porque debiamos estar en Belgiea para participar de ETNIA (Feria de Arte Latinoamerieano en Bru~elas)

Es triste cuando con esfilerzo se ganan las cosas y a1 final sornos objeto 0 de fraude 0 de engafios y quien sabe de cuantas cosas ITIis Lo funtastico de todo esto es que regresarnos de Belgica con la 110ticia de que Replmlica Dominicana seria tema central para ETNIA 2011 Ydespues que realiZIlmos buena parte del trabajo de plataforma a nosotros ni nos enteran de los resultados finales

Lo que entendemos es que si 1a cultura se va a pensar de forma sectoria~ procmando ~lacer a costa de otros la memoria que se crea no es la mas sena Pero siempre se abren nuevas posibilidades en el horizonte solo hay que tener fe y constancia pues ese rnismo 2010 presentamos FIARTE (Prin1era Feria Intemaeional de Arte Santo Domingo) una seleccion de 10 mejor del arte 1atinoamericano de gran exito en ventas YPllblico aunque se diga 10 contrario Ahora FIARTE ha pasado a ser Centro CultmaJ con sede en la Gabill de Arte Nader y proximamentc vienen gtandes propuestas para el sector artfstico nacionaL
