Town Council incumbents inauguratecampaigns for November 2016

MANNY CID TONY LAMA NELSON RODRIGUEZ

By David L. SnellingThe Miami Laker staffThree Miami Lakes council

members who are facing reelec-tion next year are seeking to keeptheir political jobs for four moreyears.

Councilmembers Manny Cid,Tony Lama and Nelson Rodriguezfiled paper work last month to runin the town’s November 8, 2016general election, when their at-

large seats are up for grabs. The mayoral seat is also at

stake but Michael Pizzi has yet toopen up a campaign account.

The incumbents, so far, haven’tdrawn any challengers.

Cid, who was first elected in2012, has launched a host of initia-tives, including live webcasting oftown council meetings, E-LibraryPilot Program, helping MiamiLakes become the first city in

Florida to accept and play pre-recorded video public commentsduring municipal meetings, per-formance based budgeting andcreating the Miami Lakes SportsHall of Fame with private money.

Cid, a 22-year resident ofMiami Lakes, also created a pro-gram for the Town to hire schoolcrossing guards and implementinga Sunday on-demand bus service

Town Council incumbents open reelection campaignsfor church services, and he workedwith Miami-Dade CountyCommissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. tosecure funding to keep the MiamiLakes senior classes running afterthe state nixed funding for the pro-gram.

Cid, whowas elected toserve as ViceMayor for thelast fiscal year, said his trackrecord speaksfor itself and isseeking to fin-ish the work hehas started.

“My votingrecord during the past three yearsfulfills several promises that Imade to the residents of MiamiLakes,” Cid said. “Serving as acouncilmember in our beautifultown for the last three years hasbeen a great experience. I havetruly enjoyed serving the residentsof Miami Lakes and hope theygive me the opportunity to contin-ue to serve them.”

Before he was elected to theTown Council, Cid served as thesenior legislature aide to two staterepresentatives.

Cid is vice president of AlwaysAt Your Side Adult Day Care Inc.,in Miami Lakes.

Lama, director of Cloud

Solutions, was a political neophytein 2012 when residents electedhim to represent District 4.

A seasoned veteran of the con-tact center software industry,Lama launched the town’s newmobile application, Lakes Life, forresidents to track various townservices, find local businesses, andreport potholesand sidewalksthat needrepairing.

The app alsoallows users toaccess theMiami LakesMarketplace, the town’sonline businessd i r e c t o r y ,search for a new doctor, places toeat or shop by using keywordssuch as pizza and dentist.

Through the app, residents canalso track down and ride MiamiLakes Moover buses in real-timeand view bus routes and schedulesfor the transit service.

“Over 1,200 residents of MiamiLakes downloaded and continue touse this app to stay in the knowand report issues ranging frommaintenance to code compliancematters,” Lama said.

Lama and Rodriguez recentlyinitiated the first Miami LakesTraffic Summit, where the stateand county brain trust gathered to

offer solutions to the traffic prob-lems throughout the town.

In October, the Town Counciladopted a transportation improve-ment plan to incorporate the pro-posed traffic solutions into thetown’s new Strategic Plan.

“We sponsored the first TrafficSummit and the results of thateffort have led to several key ini-tiatives that we are now embarkingon to solve the traffic challengeswe face in our community,” Lamasaid.

During his first four-year term,Lama also sponsored a charteramendment to bring fairness to theselection of volunteer committees, the Green Energy/PACE Initiative, and the Lake Water QualityAwareness program.

Lama said his work is not com-plete and is seeking another four-year term to accomplish his goalshe set three years ago.

“My work is not yet complete,”he said, “With the support of theresidents and council, I hope toimplement key traffic reductioninitiatives to dramatically improvethe traffic condition in MiamiLakes, one of which is makingMiami Lakes a golf cart friendlycommunity.”

Beautification is also on Lama’slist of priorities. “It will be anexciting next five years for MiamiLakes,” he added.

Rodriguez, a Coral Gables fire-

fighter, was also a political novicewhen residents elected him to SeatOne in 2012.

He co-spon-sored legisla-tion making it aprerequisite forkids participat-ing in sportsand other activ-ities at thetown’s parksand communitycenters to havean EKG to helpdetect any prob-lems with the heart, in the wake ofBrenna Vergara’s sudden death.

The 11-year-old died after shecollapsed during dance rehearsalfrom Wolff-Parkinson White(WPW) syndrome, a heart condi-tion caused by a rapid or irregularheartbeat during physical activi-ties.

Rodriguez said over the pastthree years, the town has cutexpenses, kept the property ratefor taxes low, improved communi-cations with residents and upgrad-ed the parks and recreation centers.

If elected, Rodriguez wants toresume carrying out his campaignpromises, which include the con-version of the Miami LakesDrive/Interstate 75 overpass into apedestrian and bike friendly park.

“It will bring together ourgreenways and bike lanes, whileallowing our residents to gainaccess to a 30-acre park being builtwest of I-75,” he said. “I look for-ward to the next the next few yearsas we continue to work on somevery important initiatives. There’smore work to be done such as thedevelopment of three new parks:The Par 3 the Dog Park and theMiami Lakes Drive Bridge Park.Although the past three years havebeen challenging, we continuemoving the town forward.”

Rodriguez has been a MiamiLakes resident since 1992, and heserves as an adjunct instructor forthe Institute of Criminal Justice atMiami-Dade College.

He is also the chair of thetown’s Education Advisory Boardand president of the Miami LakesK-8 Center PTSA and coordinatorof the Miami-Dade PTA Council.

Summary of actions taken at TownCouncil’s November 3 meeting

By The Miami Laker staffThe Miami Lakes Town

Council approved four resolutionsto allow Lennar HomesCorporation to build 482 residen-tial units along N.W. 154 Streetand west of 87 Avenue, thatincluded the developing companydedicating 5.19 acres of Madden’sHammock to be used as a passivepark to upgrade the neighborhoodparks concurrency.

At the November 3 regularTown Council meeting, lawmak-ers approved some adjustmentsmade to the original DunnwoodyLake development plan MiamiLakes approved in 2002, when theLowell L. Dunn family submitteda rezoning proposal for 509 single-family homes and town housesand a shopping center.

The family is selling the 144-acre tract to Lennar Homes, whichrequested the changes to theDeclaration of Restrictions for set-back requirements for the homes,right-of-way and open space forthe passive park.

Once the company pulls its firstpermit, it must reimburse MiamiLakes $1.8 million the town spenton roadway upgrades on N.W. 154Street between 84 and 87 avenuesto increase mobility, and donate$300,000 to be used strictly foreducation, as part of the originaldevelopment agreement.

Lennar Homes also agreed todonate $200,000 to Miami Lakesto create more space for neighbor-hood parks to meet the concurren-cy once the development project isbuilt.

In other town news:• Tim Daubert was elected the

new vice mayor.• Lawmakers, on a 5-2 vote,

approved a preliminary plat tosubdivide a property at 7242 LochNess Drive to build five single-family homes, a proposal manyresidents living in the neighbor-hood had opposed.

Vice Mayor Tim Daubert andCouncilmembers Caesar Mestre,Nelson Rodriguez, Tony Lamaand Frank Mingo voted for thepreliminary plat, while MayorMichael Pizzi and CouncilmemberManny Cid voted no.

Town staff said the preliminarydevelopment plans meets thetown’s criteria for approval, including meeting traffic concur-rency, and the developer is plan-ning to install infrastructure and aneight inch line to improve thequality of the water pressure in the

area.Residents said the new homes,

which will face the cul-de-sac,don’t meet the requirements fordevelopment.

But lawmakers said they had toapprove the preliminary plat sinceit meets the criteria and Floridalaw. Rejecting the plan could leadto a lawsuit, lawmakers said.

Councilmembers approvedPizzi’s suggestion that the siteplans go before lawmakers fortheir approval and a public hearingto make sure the proposed devel-opment doesn’t encroach on resi-dents’ quality of life.

• Lawmakers gave their finalapproval for an ordinance toremove the requirement thatrooftop air conditioning units ontown homes be screened fromview at eye level and insteadrequire that such units be a neutralcolor.

We get letters:Campos family expresses appreciation

To the Editor:The Miami LakerLast April, cancer robbed us of

our dad, Sergio Campos. Whilethe loss has been devastating toour family, the community supporthas brought healing to our brokenhearts. Over the past few months, mom has received beautiful lettersand emails from residents acrossMiami Lakes.

From staff at town hall to thecashiers at the nearby Publix, everyone has had touching thingsto say about “Papi.” The posthu-mous award of “Keys to the Townof Miami Lakes” and adding“Sergio Campos Way” toLochness Drive mean the world tous! Thank you for recognizing mydad in these special ways. Whileour broken hearts are far frommended, they are comforted by theoutpouring of support.

My parents have lived in MiamiLakes, in the same house, since Iwas a teenager. Dad was the presi-dent of the Loch NessHomeowner’s Association for

more than two decades, and mom– everyone knows – was his right-hand person in the association. Tosay they love Miami Lakes is amajor understatement! You havemy deepest gratitude for returningthat love in-kind.

Dade Christian, Mater Academyfall short in Regional Finals

First Baptist Academy dashedthe hopes of Dade Christian’sfootball team of winning a statetitle, as the Crusaders fell to theLions, 35-7, in the Region 2AFinal last week.

The Crusaders’ defenseallowed 206 rushing yards on 19carries for two touchdowns.

The Lions (10-1) held DadeChristian (9-1) scoreless until thefourth quarter, when quarterbackAlec Carr connected with receiverKeith Terry for a 14-yard touch-down pass.

Under first year head coachNick Martinez, a Dade Christianalumni, the Crusaders captured thedistrict championship and wontheir Region semifinal game, hop-ing for a shot at the state tourna-ment for the first time since 2012.

But the Lions proved to be toomuch to handle from the openingkickoff when the Crusaders fum-bled the ball and the Lions scored

on the ensuing play, and subse-quently exploited the Crusaders’defense in the first three quartersof the playoff game.

Martinez’s team improvedfrom last year, when the MikeSonneborn-coached team finishedwith a 6-4 record and lost in thefirst round of the playoffs.

Martinez said he’s looking for-ward to next season.

In another playoff game oflocal importance, MaterAcademy’s first year coach RoccoCasullo watched his former team, the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders, rout his new squad 60-7 in theRegion 4-7A final.

Rocco led the Raiders to statetitles in 2012 and 2014. He tookover the Mater Lions in the fallleading them to the team’s firstpostseason victories. But in theregion final, the Raiders held theLions to 127 total yards and onlysix first downs.

MLEC welcomes new principal Lourdes Diaz

LOURDES DIAZ (left), newly appointed principal of MiamiLakes Educational Center, is pictured with former principalJames Parker, and new assistant principal Beatrice Sears.

By Stephanie Brito and Elizabeth GonzalezSpecial to The Miami LakerJames Parker, the “booming

voice” of Miami Lakes Education-al Center, retired in earlyNovember, passing the torch to theschool’s next “Top Jaguar:”Lourdes Diaz.

Being the next “Top Jaguar” ofMLEC is a tough job. The schoolis known for its top students, active clubs and its environment isnothing like a typical high school.Last year, MLEC became an “A”school for the seventh consecutiveyear. The job is meant for someonelooking for a challenge, like Diaz.

“I want to be in a place like this, that is challenging, where there areideas, where there is academicthought, where there are discus-sions and conflict in a good way, where students are learning andchallenging themselves, takingthings to the next level,” said Diaz.

This idea of an intellectually

stimulating environment echoesDiaz’s college education. Diazgraduated with a major in bothLiterature and Psychology fromBrown University, an Ivy LeagueUniversity known for its traditionof intellectual inquiry. She fin-ished her graduate work at NovaSoutheastern University where shereceived a Master’s degree inEnglish Education.

Diaz began her teaching careerwhile she was still a college stu-dent, working as a substituteteacher at Miami High, her almamater, during her winter and sum-mer breaks from college. It is therethat she got her first official teach-ing job and then moved the fol-lowing year to Barbara GolemanSenior High School, where shetaught English for five yearsbefore pursuing a career as anadministrator. She started as anassistant principal in Coral ParkSenior High and after completinga principal training program,

became principal of HialeahMiddle for eight years.

She is passionate about her jobas a high school principal becauseshe loves education and she relish-es the opportunity to “create peo-ple, not products.”

Given that her leadership styleis participatory, Diaz plans tobecome increasingly involved inMLEC. She is already engagingwith students by attending asmany events and club meetings aspossible. Noticing that socialmedia plays a huge role at MLEC,she created a Twitter account tointeract with students, MLECclubs and organizations and thecommunity through social media.

But like all great leaders, she isnot just observing, rather she isalready beginning to leave herown imprint. Seeing that theschool has a unique dynamic, Diazhas decided that MLEC only needschanges in the future that will helpit grow and continue to succeed.

“We will change when the timeis right, we won’t do it justbecause a new principal is hereand it's time to change, that's notreally my style. Instead, I want tocontinue the many the wonderfulthings that Mr. Parker has startedand established here. I don't haveany crazy agenda, this school isawesome and I want to maintainthat,” said Diaz.

As principal, Diaz’s top priorityis giving back to the students bymaking decisions which studentscan benefit from and creatingopportunities that will help themimprove.

“When I’m going to make adecision I also think back to whathe would have done. He alwayssaid ‘Make a decision, the deci-sion that is right for the students, and you’ll always be able to sleepat night’ and I always think aboutthat,” said Diaz, quoting Dr.Marcos Moran, her inspiration as aprofessional.

Ivonne Moton is American’s Teacher of the Year

IVONNE MOTON

By David L. SnellingThe Miami Laker staffWhen Ivonne Moton walks

away from a 25-year teachingcareer in 2017, she hopes to leavea legacy that her students wouldremember for the rest of their lives.

The Germany native has beenindefatigable in her devotion toher job, arriving early to schooland staying until 8 p.m. each dayto make sure her students aremeticulously prepared to takestandardized tests and collegeentrance exams, as well as earngood marks on their report cards.

But the best part of her job isdeterring students from a life of

crime by underscoring educationis the best option to staying alive.

“If they are not educatedenough, their options are thestreets and jail,” said Moton, whoteaches Intense Reading for stu-dents taking the FCAT and ACTand runs the technology programat American High School.

Moton can add a top honor toher legacy, as she was namedAmerican High’s Teacher of theYear for 2015-2016, and becamethe third member of her family ofeducators to win the accolade.

Her mother, Norma Vance, andsister, Glinda Moton, won Teacherof the Year honors for their respec-tive schools.

“I felt all that I accomplished inthe school system and to be recog-nized for it, I was surprised andhonored,” she said, while sitting ather desk in her classroom. “But Iteach, not for the paycheck, butfrom the heart. My reward is howkids succeed and that’s teachingand working at 100 percent. Whena student scores a 34 on the ACT,that’s my reward because when weretire, these kids are running theworld.”

Moton said students’ success onexams lies in the hands of their

teachers.“Children love to be disci-

plined,” she said. “I teach my stu-dents to analyze each paragraph ifthey feel the tests are difficult. Thekey is how you teach them.”

American’s NAF, Be FutureReady program, has become a suc-cessful model for other Miami-Dade schools, Moton said.

NAF is a national network ofeducation, business and communi-ty leaders who work together toensure high school students arecollege, career and future ready.

Miami-Dade Public SchoolsSuperintendent Alberto Carvalhorecently recognized Moton and theNAF program at American duringa School Board meeting.

Moton said she prepares herstudents for internship jobs by firstdisciplining them, then teachingthem to respect their older peers, speak articulately and dress wellfor job interviews.

“I like to be the mediatorbetween the children and their par-ents, and we teach them the wordteamwork,” she said. “If there is aproblem in school or on the job,we encourage them to work it outand don’t let it get out of hand.”

Moton said most of her studentsheeded her advice and they wenton to successful careers.

“Some of my students are phar-macists, bailiffs, legal clerks, police and correctional officers,”

she said. “I see them in Publix andthey say ‘remember me, Ms.Moton? Look where I am todaythanks to you.’ That’s the legacyyou want to leave with them. Iwant to take them from A to Z andbeyond.”

Moton was born in Germany, where her father was stationed inthe military, and her family movedto Ohio when she was five-years-old before relocating to Miami.

She graduated from NorthMiami High and earned herBachelor’s Degree in BusinessLeadership from St. ThomasUniversity and Master’s Degreefrom Southeastern NovaUniversity.

Before pursuing a teachingcareer, she followed in her father’sfootsteps and joined the U.S.Army, and she was honorably dis-charged from the military.

She taught at Edison, Norland,Lake Stevens Middle before shelanded at American High in 2000.

Moton has to retire based on theTeacher’s Retirement System pen-sion program, but she would loveto be a substitute teacher, whilealso running her Children PleaseRead Program.

“I am going to miss touchingstudents’ lives,” she said. “I willalways wonder how they are doingnow that I am not here. I wishthere were more teachers like me.”
