There is much concern over the continuing slowdown in global economic growth given the ever present crisis in the Euro Zone, the sluggish growth in the United States and the sixth straight quarter contraction in the Chinese economy. Although the World Bank, in its East Asia and Pacific Economic update released recently, gave some hope that Asia will able to withstand this global slowdown somewhat, the fact remains that the markets mentioned above are among the biggest for both Malaysia and India and are bound to affect our growth.

Lately, concerns have also been expressed over the political and economic developments in India and how these are going to impact on the Malaysian business and investment community which is already beginning to face difficulties, problems and undue hardship there.

For Malaysia and India, 2011 was indeed a very good year as Malaysia’s total trade with India reached a new high to US$12.54 billion, an increase of 32.7% from the previous year. Malaysian exports increased by 34.6% to US$9.2 billion making India our 11th largest trading partner, the 7th largest export destination and 14th largest source of imports. For India, Malaysia was the 21st largest export destination and 19th largest source of imports.

The two-way investments between the two countries have also been increasing particularly in the manufacturing sector for India while Malaysians have been moving into the mining and quarrying sectors, in finance, insurance/takaful activities and construction. Given the developments in and around the region, it is very unlikely that 2012 could equal the record of the previous year, leave alone surpass it.

OBJECTIVES:• Is the present momentum in trade and investments between Malaysia and India sustainable?• Are there storms ahead for India?• Will India stay on course?

HIGHLIGHTS:• Eminent speakers, with an in depth knowledge of India will give insights into the developments within India and its future directions.• The luncheon will be graced by YB Dato’ Seri Mustapa bin Mohamad (Minister of International Trade and Industry), who will also make an official address.
