A year has gone by since I took office asPresident. In the recent Club electionsfor four Management Committee
positions, the four new Management Committee members were returned unopposed.Undoubtedly, the no-contest scenario is administratively and financially a positive for both the candidates and the Club. Election campaigns are far from mundane chores. We have seen last year how disruptive the elections campaign could be to normal Club life. It was therefore a welcome relief when it was announced that there was no need to hold an election this time round, even though the logistics have already been planned.
Certain pundits may view a no-contest election negatively inclining to believe that a one-party Management Committee will result in autocratic management.
One view is that diversity of representation is good for the Club. On the other hand, the oppressive ambience that is created during the elections period is something we can do without. Therein lies the dilemma of a contested Club Elections.
Experience in the past year has shown that a good management team is one that is cohesive and capable of making unpopular decisions at times when the situation so dictates. When candidates are returned on their respective platforms and agenda, it is difficult to find such a composition of team members. More often then not unpopular decisions bring out the populists among the management committee who seize on opportunities to further their factionalinterests rather than serve the long-term interest of the Club.
A diverse Management Committee composed of both pragmatists and conservatives provides a good balance of opinions. This is perhaps what members are looking for. Therefore, a sensible policy approach is to try and create a congenial election environment devoid of gutter politics. This will allow for open debates and will give members the opportunity to assess the candidates in an atmosphere of transparency. A level playing field will encouragepotential willing candidates to contest future Club elections.
At the end of the day, it is a strong, cohesive, single-minded Management Committee that gets the job done more efficiently and speedily as the team stays focussed on the tasks at hand and need not concern themselves with playing to the gallery. Ultimately the team has to work together before success is seen.
Our hope for the coming term is that we can see the end of the antagonistic chapter in our Club and the beginning of a new chapter of progress and social harmony.

Club Management
JUNE/JULY 200902
In my previous messages in this space, Ihave spoken at length about the need toelevate the products and services of our
Club in order to reinforce our position as a premier family club in Singapore. We want you as working parents or home-makers, to be able to take full advantage of the facilities the Club has to offer, and watch your children develop through the range of wholesome activities wehave for them within the safe and welcoming confines of the Club.
The proposed upgrading is another milestone in the long and remarkable history of Singapore Swimming Club. It should be noted, however, that these proposed upgrading works are not just a bunch of desirables, but key factors incorporating new technology and the latest innovations in Club culture to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Club. If pushed through successfully, stakeholders will see a transformation of the Club. Members can also expect see their investment rise in value.
But the value of membership is measured not just in dollars and cents. There are other intangibles we want to cultivate – like a secure, gracious and friendly environment. That is where the Club Rules come in. Rules are not there to restrict freedom, but to ensure fairness and to promote harmony. The Club is tightening certain Rules which for some reason have become lax over the years. Implementing is not going to be easy since no Rule is palatable to all.We ask for your understanding and co-operation so that our staff can be seen as conscientious and impartial in performing their duties.
We want to be inclusive and sensitive to the needs of members. Please continue to give us your constructive feedback whether it is on the range of activities we have at the Club, the product and service standard or on Club policies. All these will be channeled to the committee – or the desk – that makes the decisions.
We hope to create a vibrant and harmonious environment in the Club for everyone to enjoy!.
I take this opportunity to wish everyone happy holidays during this school break.

T he request from Ruhana from the MembershipDepartment was straightforward enough: An ex memberhad come to visit. Could someone from Marcom
Department take some pictures of Mr Walter Moffat and his daughter?
Turns out, Mr Moffat was a member of Singapore Swimming Club in the 1960s when, as a civilian communications specialist working for the British government, he was stationed in Singapore. His whole family had left Singapore for Hong Kong in 1966.
This was his first visit to Singapore in 43 years. He had come down with his daughter, Mrs Irene Moffat-MacDonald who was a little girl when she was living in Singapore back then.
I realized there and then, that we had a “bloom in winter” moment on our hands. “You’re both important historical figures,” I told our guests from Scotland. “We can’t let you leave without interviewing you.”
They laughingly obliged. So we took a walk through the Club premises as Mr Moffat and Irene gave little running commentaries. Every object, every nook, every piece of building structure, they looked at with a retrospective view. We were treading simultaneously on two tracks – the present and the historical. The experience was almost surreal.“We used to have a Sikh doorman with a turban stationed at the entrance,” Irene said as we passed the main entrance at the front lobby.
Everything looks different – except the pool!
We walked through the Atrium and emerged at the foyer facing the recreational pool.
A stroll through the pastBy Vincent Especkerman
Mr Moffat & Daughter, Mrs Irene Moffat-MacDonald
”Everything looks different,” declared Mr Moffat, “except the pool!”
“Yes it is a bit disconcerting with so many highrise buildings in the area,” Irene chimed in, “I expected to see the Club by the sea – but they’ve reclaimed the land.
We strolled towards to the Cabanas, and took some pictures of Mr Moffat and Irene there.
“The cabanas are in the same position, but they look different now,” said Irene. “The shore line was just behind the cabanas. The Club was raised slightly above the level of the beach. There was a narrow stretch of beach behind the Club; beyond that was the sea.
I tried to visualize a bare beach behind the cabanas. Imagine – no Sports Complex, no Badminton Hall and no Competition pool!
Irene strolled along the recreational pool. “The pool was the focus of our social life – for me at least. I was a member of the swimming team and trained three times a week. remember the competitions we had with the Chinese Swimming Club. We kids even did our homework by the poolside!”Mrs Joyce Moffat (centre) with Mr Moffat’s working colleagues Mrs Jessie Stredwick (left) and Mrs Nora Knox who

The gentleman sitting right in the centre is one of the Club swimming coaches. Some of Irene’s friends she was able to identify were Alex Scott (standing in the back row, third from left), Maureen Sellers (standing in the back row, third from right) and Carol Stredwick (seated in the center of the front row)
We took another picture of the Moffats standing by the edge of the pool. “Move a bit to the right” I told them. “We’ll take in the Club Logo on the Multi-Storey Car-Park, and I’ll send you the picture.”
“That would be nice,” Irene said.
As we walked on, Irene continued: “The building façade facing the pool is completely changed. And there was no multi-storey car park – it was just open ground for members to park their cars.

Diving in the dark
“The children’s pool is in the same position. At the other end of the pool near the cabanas, was a diving platform. There were two springboards; one was higher than the other. We used to dive from those boards. It was more exciting diving in the dark because you didn’t know when you were going to hit the water.”
I had read about that diving platform when I was researching for material to put in the Club website. But it was a dry fact to me. Now hearing about it from Irene, I was transported back in history. I could somehow hear the squeals of delight from the children playing by the pool.
What was the social scene like, I wanted to know.
“I remember attending Scottish dance classes and learned how to do the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance! And we had children’s parties going on all the time.
“We had an open-air cinema where you have the cabanas right now. They just put out some chairs and we would sit down and watch a movie under the stars.
“The Children’s Playground is in the same location. I used to love thePlayground. We had see-saws and swings.”
A great place to be!
All too soon, it was time for the Moffats to leave. They had to check out of their hotel. Our fifteen minute tour around the Club came full circle at the Front Foyer, where it started. For Mr Walter Moffat and Irene Moffat-MacDonald, their engagement with Singapore Swimming Club took 43 yearsto come round to full circle. But come to full circle it did!
We said our farewells in the Front Lobby. “The Club was a great place to be. It still is. If ever I came back to Singapore,I’d be a member again,” Mr Walter Moffat said.

They introduced the tools of the trade and taught them how to select a house based on the four compass directions. Attendees even got down to the practicals as they calculated their own ‘gua’ numbers. That is used to find out their favorable direction. Distance Swimming Award #29 March by Snow Quek
They will go far, these kids!
T he first distance swimming event for the yearattracted 17 participants. This time round we had ayoung group, ranging from five to twelve years of
age. They were there either to go farther than they did the last time round – or to better their timing for the same distance. Although it was the children who were swimming, there was no lack of support from their parents who were there to cheer them on. Take up the challenge yourself and sign up for the next Distance Swimming Award happening in June!

T he ASEAN CUP was back on Singapore’s shore – afterthree years. This time it was hosted by The Grassroots’Aquatic Club and was held at Singapore Sports Schoolfacility!
The meet was conducted over three days, with a morning and afternoon session on each day. 24 teams took part – 12 from Singapore, 6 from The Philippines, 4 from Malaysia, 1 from Brunei and 1 from Indonesia. There were altogether 525 swimmers!
SSC sent 42 swimmers between nine and seventeen years old, all smartly geared up in their brand new swim wear. After the pep talk by Director of Swimming Barry Prime, everyone was raring to go.
The highlight of the event for SSC must be the Relay events. We were pushed to third spot on some technicality but, that did not dampen the spirit of our swimmers and supporters.
The Closing Ceremony cum Farewell Dinner & Show was a colourful affair with each club giving a performance on stage. Here’s where we draw the line and start preparing for the 8th ASEAN CUP to be held in Brunei!

T he annual Swimming Gala Night is traditionally held tohonour our swimmers who represented the Club in the3rd ASEAN Midget Meet, 24th JIC, 40th SNAG and more
recently, the 7th ASEAN Cup. It is also our little gesture of thanks to the technical officials and parents for their help and support rendered during the course of the year.
To encourage participation, we got the swimmers and coaches to come earlier to decorate the Ballroom. The result – a gaily decorated hall with colourful balloons and buntings.
We were honoured to have all the MC members down for the event. The VIP for the evening was Mr Ang Peng Siong. The event started off with speeches by Mr Barry Prime and Swimming Chair, Mrs Loreen Teo, followed by the presentation of awards to eight of our outstanding swimmers for their effort, commitment and achievement.

We also had the Best Team, Best Décor and Best Dress (Male / Female) awards given out that evening. And there were some attractive prizes to be given away in the Lucky Draw. The Third Prize was an Arena Track Suit, Second an Electronic Musical Keyboard and the top prize was a Nintendo Wii!
However, I must say the highlights of the night must be the two performances, the first by Elite Swimmers Benjamin Ho and Gareth Goh, and the second by Barry Prime, Terry Tan and Simon Linn! I’m sure everyone really enjoyed themselves thoroughly that evening!

Asri has been with the Club for nine years now, having joined on 23 Mar 2000. As a security officer, he performs all the things required of him. He is always polite to members and fellow colleagues, and he is always ready to give that personal touch – a smile here, a cheery greeting there. Then in mid-March, he came to the aid of a member who had fainted in
the Club grounds. He was commended for his swift and caring action.

Koh Bee LengAccounts Executive (Payroll)
Bee Leng is the bringer of good news. Everyone is happy to see Bee Leng – especially at that time of the month when she comes around to hand each one of the office staff their pay slips. But all that good-natured ribbing belies the heavy burden of responsibility that comes with her job. Her job is lonely and tedious. As Accounts Executive – Payroll, she deals with salary
matters for all staff including temporary & casual workers. But the job seems to suit her quiet nature. Over the years she has shown herself to be conscientious and disciplined – and the punch-card has never caught her late.

Twenty-seven years is a long time to work in one place. Whatis her work philosophy and the secret to her longevity?
“There is no secret,” she said. “My colleagues and members motivate me. I just do whatever is needed to be done. Time flies when you enjoy your work.”
Sumiatun is involved with the Staff Recreation Committee and is the Branch Representative of the worker’s union.
In 2004, she was given the Excellent Service Award by S’pore Hotel Association & Spring S’pore. That’s not surprising since she remembers many members’ names and their numbersas well. She even knows their family membership history, sometimes stretching to 3 generations!
Sumiatun dotes on her daughter who got her diploma and will soon be going into uni. What is her lifestyle like?
“I lead a simple life,” Sumiatun said. “My life revolves round the the Club and my home. All my friends are from the Club. After work I go home and spend time with my family. I love cooking. I cook mostly Malay and Javanese dishes. Besidescooking, I sleep whenever I get the chance.”

“The one sure sign that I still like my job is that I don’t have to drag my feet to come to work every morning.”
Sumiatun started out at the Club in 1991 as a mailingclerk and rose up the ranks to Senior Clerk and ActingMaintenance Executive until she was transferred to the
Membership Department and promoted to MembershipOfficer and later to Senior Membership Officer.
Ling has a cheerful personality and is ever obliging; and he is known to stay back late in the office to complete an urgent piece of work.
“The three years I spent with the Club were enriching years,” he said. “I got to know a lot of people in the Club, each with their own personality and way of doing things. I learned a lot from my colleagues in the different departments. I like to learn new things – that’s partly because I hate the feeling of being stagnant.”
After three years working at the Club, how does he feel about his job? “I still like the challenges it throws up every day,” Ling said. “The one sure sign that I still like my job is that I don’t have to drag my feet to come to work every morning– except perhaps on rainy days, when I prefer to sleep.”
