Electrical Safety 2101
BASIC ELECTRICITY SAFETY AWARNESS
MODULE 4ELECTRICAL SHOCK
OBJECTIVE:
Identify administrative controls that electrical personal use to
work safely and prevent electric shock
SHOCK HAZARDS
Electrical Shock occurs when the human body completes an electrical
circuit and becomes the conductor
Electrical safety depends on qualified personal
NOT allowing their body to become the conductor
A good rule of thumb to heed is that electricity always
will follow the least path of resistance
SHOCK HAZARDS
Electrical Shock occurs when the human
body completes an electrical circuit and
becomes the conductor
This person is in danger because the switch
is open and they have inadvertently become
a conductor
SHOCK HAZARDS
Electrical Shock occurs when the human
body completes an electrical circuit and
becomes the conductor
This person is very sad because the switch
is closed and they have inadvertently
become a conductor
EFFECTS OF SHOCK
Severity of shock is related to amount of current and the path through the
body
A current path through the heart is extremely dangerous since the human
heart is controlled by small electrical signals from the brain
A very small current can cause cardiac arrest and the person has a great
chance of death unless CPR can be administered immediately
EFFECTS OF SHOCK
Electrical current not passing through the heart can cause pain, paralysis,
or tissue burn
Side effects of non fatal electrical shock are confusion, amnesia,
headaches, and cardio-pulmonary irregularities
Health issues from electrical shock can last several hours, several days, or
can lead to chronic health issues in certain cases
SHOCK TREATMENT
De-energize the circuit
Remove the victim from the circuit or dangerous area
Call 911 and a 1st Responder Team if one is available in your work site
Administer CPR if necessary
ARC FLASH HAZARDS
Arc Flash occurs when and energized source comes in close
proximity with a grounded source creating an instantaneous blast or
explosion
The potential effects are devastating to any human in close proximity
to the arch flash causing severe burns and hearing damage
Arc Flash is preventable using explosion doors and proper protective
equipment when qualified personal are required to work on energized
equipment
QUIZ 4A
1. What is the correct sequence of events to follow if you observe
someone receive a serious electrical shock?
A. Call 911, de-energize the circuit, go home
B. Call 911, give first aid as needed
C. Call 911, de-energize the circuit, remove victim, take victim for
medical treatment, report the incident
QUIZ 4B
2. Electric Arc Flash occurs when:
A. An electrical system is over-loaded
B. An energized source comes in close proximity with a grounded
source
C. When an person’s hand comes in contact with insulated energized
conductors
QUIZ 4C
3. If you discover an unconscious person, clearly a victim of electric shock, and are unable to de-energize the electrical circuit, how do you remove the victim from the circuit?
A. Do nothing. There's nothing you can do to help him.
B. Grab the person, pull them off the energized line, render CPR.
C. Wait for EMS to arrive because they are trained to deal with this kind of problem
D. Use non-conductive dry wood or similar material to move him off the energized line, render CPR.
