WHY?3 Michael K. Hackett // Design Portfolio

Page 5: Michael Hackett-Portfolio

I believe astonishing experiences enhance the human condition.

why? When I am reached emotionally by a palpable moment, that is truly a beautiful event. My personal experiences with thoughtfully processed environment are what inspires me to continue on in this profession.

action from processGreat design is the summation of astute process. Conceptual and metaphorical development allows for an articulate and in depthexperience. I believe design isinspired by experiences. As a designer, I transform my own experiences and translate them into visuals for others.

thriving on communityConstructive critique from my peers is where design intersects with all subjects. The input from other colleagues with much different experiences than my own gives me the tools to create.

appreciate considerationThe ability to slow down and be fully present in my surroundings is completely beneficial.I appreciate a design by allowing it to consume me and allowing it the opportunity to tap

The Robertson School for Media and Culture islocated in the Mass Communications building on the Virginia Common-wealth University campus in Richmond, Virginia. The Mass Communications department is undergoing a rebranding and looked towards VCU’s interior design department for inspiration.

The goal of this project is to mirror the social media culture of community by creating an open central hub to collaborate with the entire community.

The NEXT student design competition, sponsored by Steelecase, aimed to find the new style of corporate environments. Using only Steelecase furniture, contestants were to create a new and innovative space to work in.

Inspiration for this project stemmed from the human body and its function like a machine. The body’s major and minor parts ultimately work together to accomplish all tasks.

The Dupont chemical plant, located in Chesterfield, Virginia, has a long history in the area and has done substantial amounts of work world-wide. The lobby and reception area are highly out of date and in need of design assistance.

The space needed to be redesigned in order to facilitate a welcoming and safer feel to the lobby. Inspiration was founded upon creative ideas involving the function of the space.

Sweet 95 is known as the neighborhood friendly bakery and ice cream shop. Lately, sales have been down. Manybelieve it is due to the outdated design and lack of outdoor space designated for roaming and seating.

The inspiration comes directly from the community of Richmond and its staple images. The rocks in The James River, the brick interiors of the fan district, and the murals.
