Who is this Guy?Architects today have an amaz-
ing selection of electronic tools from which to choose. The internet, BIM, Photoshop, Google Earth and the en-tire Microsoft suite give us an exciting selection of software from which to use. However, our vision, imagination and creativity come from within our-selves. This will remain the same re-gardless of the technologies available.
I was fortunate enough to ex-perience the exciting beginnings of CAD (AutoCAD 2.1) and the in-tegration of computer use in archi-tecture at the university level in the early 1980’s. The newness and pos-sibilities seemed endless at the time. Professors assigned to teach the new technologies, once in a while, became the students themselves.
I began my CAD experiences on a state-of-the-art Intergraph work sta-tion like the image above. Personal computers were coming of age and finding themselves at the heart of any progressive firm. Word process-ing, spread sheets, laser printers, ras-ter to vector conversions and CAD were all being tried, tested and inte-grated into practices across the coun-try. Still, the Mayline, Kohinoor pen, mylar, triangle and circle template did not vanish as fast as the industry
predicted. I expect that there are still some old hold-outs to all of this new fangled computer stuff even today.
I was effectively raised profes-sionally during a time of rapidly changing architectural practice. I em-braced the new technologies and held on to some of the old tools. (Yes, I still have an electric eraser and eras-ing shield) Not the least of which is the art of hand sketching and com-municating ideas quickly. I love Pris-macolor markers, Stadler Lumicolor black pens, yellow trace paper and gridded notepads. I equally love the speed at which I can generate a digital massing concept from a few sketches and have a perspective view in a very short amount of time. BIM, Photoshop and a good scanner cannot be beat.
I feel that a successful Archi-tect focuses on communication. The skill to effectively communi-cate a vision, a space, a concept and a dream is one of my definitions of practicing great architecture. An-other definition I have heard and enjoy is architecture = art + science.
I believe one definition of art in this equation to be the imagina-tion, creativity and visionary skills of the individual. I also submit that art is clear, concise communication.
Communication with the client, de-sign team and all the skilled people needed to create a successful Project.
I interpret the science variable in this equation to mean a number of dif-ferent things. First, I take it to mean the science of how to put a building together structurally, how the pieces and parts fit together. Also, I extend the meaning of science to include the earth sciences; from climate to daylight to natural resources. Finally, I see science as the sy in sy-fi. I will admit it, I am a technology geek.
Buildings will continue to be built, clients will still expect projects that are on-time and within budget and architects will continue to de-sign. Our tools may change, but the process will remain the same: we imagine, dream, draw and create.

Located directly to the south of Iowa State Universiy’s campus, this Mixed-Use building houses commercial spaces and parking on the first floor and student housing above. With the zoning height restrict-ed to 7 stories, the Owner chose to construct two stories of two level apartments that included mezzanines. The mezzanines were not considered stories.

Recessed Mounting Kit (RMK)
The optional Recessed Mounting Kit is for use in new concrete or masonry construction only. The kit includes a shell housing and mounting hardware to be cast-in-place. The KNOX-BOX is mounted into the shell housing after construction is completed.
Rough-in Dimensions: 6-1/2"H x 6-1/2"W x 5"D
Installation: Mounting kit may be fastened to inside wall of a concrete form or set in place during masonry wall construction. Wiring conduit may be connected through knock-out hole(s) in the shell housing.
IMPORTANT: Take care to make sure that the front of the shell housing, including the cover plate and screw heads, are flush with the finish wall. Leave cover and screws in place until the KNOX-BOX is ready for mounting inside. The four (4) mounting studs may be replaced with Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolts or longer studs if required. Two (2) long sheet metal screws are provided for attachment of shell housing to the inside of a concrete form. With the housing held firmly in place, drill two (2) 1/8” holes through the form wall and the housing front cover. Insert screws and pull housing tight against form wall. Remove screws before removing form.
