B R O C H U R E Description: A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:2-28-14

Course Instructor:Comm 130, Caryn Esplin

Programs/Tools:Adobe Illistrator Adobe InDesignAdobe Photoshop

Objective:Use multiple Adobe Products to create an attractive brochure. Learn proper spacing and typography in a brochure layout.

Process:I decided to make a brochure for an art exhibit display-ing my brother’s work. I took the original folds from one of our activities and created a rough draft. At first, my images we a little too big and a little hard to manage, I realized that they would not fit on the pages.I decided to use the direct selection tool in Adobe Pho-toshop and take out the images of the women’s faces and then I was able to place the images in a way that made sense with the layout.

Also once I selected the faces I was able to wrap the text around them.Lastly I made his logo with the pen tool in Adobe Illustra-tor. I played with his signature and created it into a logo using vector graphics.

E V E N T A DDescription:A color, full bleed, event add and we were only allowed to use Microsoft Word to design it.

Date:1-31-14

Course/ Instructor:Comm 130, Caryn Esplin

Programs/Tools:Microsoft Word

Objective:Learn how to make attractive designs in Word.

Process:I took a photo from a Coldplay song book and used a scanner to scan the image of this man playing the piano. After scanning the image I realized that He was bald and decided to use that to my advantage for a fund-raiser. I decided to use two blocks to frame the words ballads and balding. After that I realized that they were crowding the paper so I used a gradient affect, and opacity to make them see through, so you could see the mans bald head. I then created a text box and reduced it opacity so that it became see through as well. Over all I created a flow through the flyer in a zig zag formation. I used Microsoft Word and an HP Scanner.

M O N TA G E Description:Blend Two images together so they have pixles in common.

Date:2-14-14

Course/Instructor:Comm 130, Caryn Eslpin

Programs/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn the principle of masking and layering images.

Process: By using photoshop I took two images from the internet and blended them together to get the final effect.

I placed the two images over one another, then by using the brush tool I “masked out” one of the images using about 30% opacity so that the image became somewhat see through. Once I got the images of the men the way I wanted them, I layered two textures over the top of the images and then using the same process made them see through.

Date:2-27-14

Course/Instructor:Comm 130, Caryn Esplin

Programs/Tools:Adobe Indesign Adobe Illistrator

Objectives:Learn how to link artboards from Adobe Illistrator to Adobe Indesign. Learn how to use creat a project with adaquate white space and a powerful message.

Then I hand made some lighting blots and placed them behind the mic design. Lastly I used the pen tool and made the cord that runs the bottom of the page, and the “plug ins” are made with a rounded rectangle tool and a few white lines to make negative space.

Programs/Tools:Adobe InDesign Adobe Illistrator

Objectives:Learn how to link artboards from Adobe Illistrator to Adobe Indesign

Process:This Project was pretty difficult for me. There was something about having to fill a whole page and making it feel balanced. However after multiple sketches and drafts I came up with Thunder Klapp Sound, and I am happy with the results. The first thing I did was look up examples of old micro-phones, I found one that I liked and then I used the Pen tool to trace the parts of the image that I wanted to keep.

Then I hand made some lighting blots and placed them behind the mic design. Lastly I used the pen tool and made the cord that runs the bottom of the page, and the “plug ins” are made with a rounded rectangle tool and a few white lines to make negative space.

F L I E RDescription: Make a flier that will catch the attention of the common passer by.

Date:1-31-2014

Course Instructor:Comm 130, Caryn Esplin

Programs: Adobe InDesign

Objective: Our objective as students was to “create a new layout that will be attractive and more inviting to read.” Also to “apply design principles by using appropriate typog-raphy and also incorporating basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.”

Process:After choosing a layout that I liked the most I designed the flier in Adobe InDesign that allowed me to add some more detail. I started with emphasizing the word “leadership” in the fliers title creating contrast and mak-ing it the focal point of the design. I then aligned the right side of the title with the image and the date and time, which gave the layout visual flow, leading the eye to important detail.

L O G ODescription:Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:2-20-14

Course Instructor:Comm 130, Caryn Esplin

Programs/Tools:Adobe Illistrator

Objective:Learn how to use the pen tool, and how to use shapes and to change their demetions.

Process: For the first logo I used the shape tool to create a rectan-gle and then using the text tool overlaid the letters SMK. Then using the line tool I added accent lines above and bellow the letterings to create balance and repetition. Finally adding the word, PHOTOGRAPHY in all caps at the bottom of the rectangle and adjusted the kerning to make it span the length of the shape. On the second logo I used the pen tool to draw one side of the mustache and then copy and pasted it to the other side and inverted it so it would match up.

Then I added the typography so that the M would flow into the mustache. I had to so some re-shaping to make it all work, but in the end I came out with a fun result.Lastly I used the ellipse tool to make a circle and then added typography using diagonal alinement for the words making it appealing to the eye.

I M A G I N G Description:Take an original photo and use it in a design.

Date:2-7-14

Course/Instructor:Comm 130, Caryn Esplin

Programs:Adobe Photoshop

Objective:Take photos using correct photography principles.Learn how to edit in Photoshop.

Process: It was really interesting to learn some new things with my camera, I also learned a lot about photoshop as well. On the first photo, I learned that I needed to focus on the sky first, and then compose my shot, or else the sky would totally be blown out. (washed out, or without color) I Also had a blast taking a picture of my room-mate Derek, I focused my camera on his eye and then composed the shot from there. And lastly as I took the sunset shot I realized that it was out of focus. I then focused on the clouds near the sun, and the camera took a great shot.

W E B PA G EDescription:I designed this website to display the design principles I used to make my Logo.

Date:3-14-14

Course/Instructor: Comm 130, Caryn Esplin

Program/Tools:Text WranglerAdobe Illistrator

Objective:Learn how to use HTML coding, and also some CSS.

Process:I used Text Wrangler to create this website. I have never used Text Wrangler before, and I have never used HTML or CSS. I used the HTML code instructions to be able add the content to the website. However once I did that, it was all organized, yet it still had no color and lit-tle design. So by using the CSS I was able to create a new looking website. I created a box that spread almost the full length of the page, and then I made multiple head-ings and layer them out so they would line up with one another. I then choose a Mono Chromatic color scheme so that it would add some nice contrast.
