to provide you with information on a variety of ways to “buy local.” The material that we have provided in tonight’s program book will give you a start, and if you visit our mini local growers farmers’ market downstairs in the Ballroom, you’ll be introduced to some of these folks in person. Our thanks go out to Todd Haymore and the team at the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for jumping at the opportunity to make this market possible for you tonight. You might even be inspired to take home something for breakfast, straight from the farm.

We hope you will also be inspired to find out even more about this revolution and its many facets and to learn about the individuals and organizations who are leading the charge locally.

One such organization is Tricycle Gardens, who is turning vacant lots in Richmond’s inner-city neighborhoods into beautiful and productive community gardens. In addition, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden has added a vegetable garden dedicated to supplying the Central Virginia Foodbank with fresh vegetables this summer.

Yes, there will be much to “expand our horizons, stimulate conversation, and inspire our community.” We hope you enjoy the evening.

Thank you for your support of The Richmond Forum this season. We look forward to seeing you again in November!

Tonight’s program represents The Richmond Forum at its very best. Every aspect of our mission will be met, and then some.

The Forum’s mission is “to bring leaders from the world stage to our stage in Richmond—to expand horizons, stimulate conversation, and inspire our community.”

Marion Nestle and Michael Pollan are certainly such leaders. They are at the forefront of what the New York Times recently called a “Food Revolution.” They have become the advocates of America’s 305 million “eaters,” if not the world’s.

Tonight, they will expand our horizons as we learn more about the issues associated with the production and consumption of food. Marion Nestle’s approach will be purely scientific as she explores nutrition, safety, and misleading or confusing label claims and information. Michael Pollan will then approach the subject from a political and agricultural point of view. He’s been spending time in D.C. lately and he’s taking the stage tonight fresh from meetings with everybody from the White House chef to the new Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, so he’s prepared to give us a real-time assessment of where U.S. food policy is headed.

So, there’s no doubt that we’ll be learning tonight. Our horizons will be expanded.

There’s also no doubt that once you leave tonight’s program, you’ll be talking. Probably over breakfast tomorrow morning as you take a look at your food selections with a new perspective. You may find yourself discussing the cereal box label more than the Sunday paper.

We hope you will also be inspired by tonight’s program, first through the presentations of our illustrious speakers, and also through our efforts

Dominion [NYSE: D] is a homegrown Richmond company with roots extending back to the Colonial era. In the early 1900s, the company began operating as an electric and gas utility under the name Virginia Electric & Power Co.—about the time Richmond became the nation’s first city to operate electric streetcars.

With about 5,000 employees in the Richmond area and more than 10,000 throughout the Commonwealth, today’s Dominion plays a vital role in supporting the state’s economy. In 2009, the company celebrates its 100th anniversary as a provider of electric service in Virginia.

Mindful of its Virginia heritage, Dominion has expanded its operations to become a leading provider of commodity energy and energy services in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the U.S.—a market of 50 million homes and businesses where 40 percent of the nation’s energy is consumed. Dominion now serves more than 5 million retail electric and natural gas customers in 12 states.

Good corporate citizenship and responsible environmental stewardship are integral to Dominion’s business mission. The company’s philanthropic arm, the Dominion Foundation, contributes more than $20 million a year to qualified non-profit organizations in communities where the company does business.

For example, Dominion invests heavily in the preservation and protection of natural resources, often going beyond legal requirements when backed by sound science and economic sense. Whether through the installation of state-of-the-art pollution controls on its power stations, cost-effective recycling and disposal of waste materials, or support for research and development of new and cleaner energy forms, Dominion works for a healthy environment to promote the well-being of the communities it serves.

With corporate funds and the full backing of senior management, Dominion volunteers also organize and lead numerous community initiatives that address local needs.

Marion Nestle emphasizes that it is “nestle” as in “trestle” and that she is not connected to the Swiss food conglomerate Nestlé of chocolate fame and infant formula controversy. She is instead an ardent scientist, activist, food safety expert and award-winning author who, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, “has become what Ralph Nader was to the automobile industry.”

Nestle’s 2006 book, What to Eat, is a resource for those who want to navigate the modern supermarket’s labyrinth of choices, labels, health claims and portion sizes with an eye toward freshness, taste, nutrition and health. The book won the James Beard Award (Reference) in 2007. She is also the author of Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health (2002) and Safe Food: Bacteria, Biotechnology, and Bioterrorism (2003). Food Politics has won awards from the Association for American Publishers and the James Beard Foundation and received the 2003 World Hunger Year Harry Chapin Media Award.

Nestle received a bachelor of arts degree in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1959. She holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology (1968) and a master’s in public health nutrition (1986), both from Berkeley. From 1976 to 1986, she was associate dean of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, where she taught nutrition to medical students, residents and practicing physicians. She was also the director of a nutrition education center sponsored by the American Cancer Society at the school.

From 1986 to 1988, Nestle was senior nutrition policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and managing editor of the 1988 Surgeon General’s Report of

Nutrition and Health. She has served on the FDA Food Advisory Committee and Science Board, the USDA/DHHS 1995 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and American Cancer Society committees on dietary guidelines for cancer prevention.

Nestle is currently the Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health at New York University. She chaired that department from 1988 to 2003. She also holds positions as professor of sociology at NYU and visiting professor of nutritional

sciences at Cornell University. She has also held faculty positions at Brandeis University.

Nestle’s latest book is Pet Food Politics: The Chihuahua in the Coal Mine, which examines melamine pet food contamination in products from China in 2007 and its implications for the human food chain.

Marion Nestle blogs almost daily at www.foodpolitics.com.

What did you have for dinner tonight? More to the point, what will you have tomorrow for breakfast? Tonight’s Richmond Forum speakers without doubt will have you thinking about your choices.

Michael Pollan has written on many subjects over the last two decades, but it is his explorations into the production and consumption of food in 21st-century America that have made him an oracle for those who want to know exactly what they are eating and why. Two books on the subject have earned him extended stays on the New York Times Bestsellers List, as well as frequent appearances as a speaker and television guest.

In The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, Pollan follows the basic food chains that sustain us—industrial food, organic (or alternative) food and food we forage for ourselves. He looks at eating choices from their original sources to final food on the plate, revealing not only cultural determinants of what we eat, but also some surprising evolutionary ones. The Omnivore’s Dilemma was named one of the ten best books by the New York Times and The Washington Post in 2006. The book also won the James Beard Award for best food writing and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Pollan’s In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto was published in January 2008. In it, he explores the dietary landscape of the modern supermarket and offers a roadmap for relearning what is healthy, how to manage appetite and returning eating from the car to the table. He argues that a focus on “nutritionism” and “healthful” additions to food have not lead to better health—suggesting instead that well-grown, unprocessed foods are a better choice.

Born in 1955, Pollan grew up in Long Island, New York, and was educated at Bennington College, Oxford University and Columbia University, receiving a master’s in English from the latter in 1981. He has been a contributing editor of the New York Times Magazine since 1987. He served for many years as executive editor of Harper’s. In 2003, he joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism as the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism. He is also the

director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism at Berkeley.

In addition to his books on food production and the American diet, Pollan has written about agriculture, gardens, drugs and architecture. His essays have appeared in many anthologies. He has written articles for Harper’s, Mother Jones, Gourmet, Vogue, Travel + Leisure, Gardens Illustrated and House & Garden.

Pollan lives in the Bay Area with his wife, painter Judith Belzer, and their son, Isaac.

Susan Greenbaum graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, was a Fortune 500 corporate officer and now signs her tax return as a singer-songwriter. She has released four CDs (three of all-original material), won several national songwriting awards

and opened for a wide array of musical luminaries. She has been featured twice in Billboard, which calls her “a startlingly adept writer” with a voice that is a “strong and clear delight.” Susan focuses her songwriting on intelligent, meaningful lyrics

wrapped in beautiful melodies and sticky hooks. Her voice is as versatile as her songs are stylistically diverse. The Kansas City native performs solo, duo and with her band, and she shares her songs with many worthy causes around Richmond.

Susan has a much healthier appetite and passion for food than her sub-5’, sub-100 lb frame would suggest.

Hear more at www.susangreenbaum.com. Accompanying Susan tonight is Lucy

Kilpatrick, a Shenandoah Conservatory of Music graduate who performs with First Impressions, Jazz Ladies, and in Julie Johnson’s Just a Closer Walk with Patsy Cline.

From The Commissioner,Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services

As a Richmond Forum board member, and as the VDACS Commissioner, I am delighted to be able to address attendees at The Forum’s final 2008-2009 program, “In Search of Real Food.” I may be prejudiced, but I believe there is no state better able

to put consumers in touch with wholesome, nutritious and great-tasting food than Virginia. This is due largely to the great diversity of Virginia agriculture. We are not a one-product state. We don’t just produce corn, potatoes or pork. We produce all of these, and a whole lot more, encompassing all aspects of the food chain: fruits, vegetables, grains, meat and poultry, seafood, peanuts, dairy, eggs, specialty products, and inedible items such as wood products, fiber, nursery products and Christmas trees.

Diversity and excellence has made agriculture Virginia’s largest industry by far, with nothing else coming a close second. Indeed, agriculture has an economic impact of $55 billion annually and provides more than 357,000 jobs in the Commonwealth. These are impressive numbers and Virginia’s growers and producers deserve great credit for helping to achieve them.

Our farmers employ a variety of produc-tion methods, and I firmly believe that a solid industry of agriculture embraces all of these. Our farms are large, small and in-the-middle, although we are seeing a marked increase in the number of small farms. Production practices range from organic and free-range to no-till and traditional. It takes all of these players and all of these methods to feed the world. It also takes good marketing practices, and this is also an area where Virginia’s diversity is an asset.

We have large family farms that market

their products internationally, but more and more of our farmers are moving into direct sales, whether it’s at the farm gate or a local farmers’ market. Many participate in the subscription system called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and some market their products directly to restaurants. Our recent farm-to-table event in Northern Virginia was a tremendous success in helping some of our small farmers market their products directly to high-end restaurants in the D.C. area.

We have seen an increase in these direct sales methods because, more and more, American consumers want to know the person growing their food as well as his or her production methods. When farmers look their customers in the eye and explain their production practices, it creates a very high level of trust between grower and consumer.

We will not feed the world strictly on a direct-sales basis, however, so at VDACS we will continue to work with alternative and traditional agriculture on issues of food safety, marketability and environmental responsibility. I think our Mission Statement captures our intent well: We promote the economic growth and development of Virginia agriculture, provide consumer protection and encourage environmental stewardship.

I hope that at intermission and after tonight’s program, you will experience The Forum’s own version of Direct Marketing by visiting our mini farmers’ market. Here you can show your support of Virginia’s direct marketers in the best way I know how —by buying their products.

Four Ways To“Buy Local”

Local grown programs at your

grocer

Due to popular consumer demand, more and more grocery stores are now purchasing locally when possible. Some stores even use signage to identify the local farmers from whom they are purchasing.

Farmers’ markets

Farmers’ markets are a great way to buy the very freshest produce, meats, eggs, honey and other products directly from a variety of farmers. During the spring, summer, and fall, there are over a dozen farmers’ markets operating in the Richmond area. See www.vdacs.virginia.gov/vagrown/frmsmkts.shtml for listings.

Direct from the farm

Whether from the farmer’s gate, a road-side stand, at a Pick-Your-Own farm or via a website, when you develop a relationship with farmers like those displaying in our mini farmers’ market in the Ballroom tonight, you can be sure you’re getting the freshest produce, meat, poultry, eggs and other products.

CSA shareholders

When you subscribe to a CSA, consumers provide the farmer with working capital in advance, in return for a full season of products. Growers gain some financial security while reducing their marketing costs. (See related story.)

Central Virginia Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) consists of a community of individuals who pledge sup-port to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community’s farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Typically, members or “share-holders” of the farm or garden pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer’s salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm’s bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnect-ing to the land and participating directly in food production. Members also share in the risks of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. By direct sales to community members, who have provided the farmer with working capital in advance, growers receive better prices for their crops, gain some financial security, and are relieved of much of the burden of mar-keting. of individual character development and as an essential element in the creation of a strong

community. These Trinity students, selected from the School’s Honor Roll, serve as ushers

for The Richmond Forum this season. Through their service, the students facilitate an exchange of

ideas that broadens our understanding of the trends and issues shaping our lives and our community.

Nestle & Pollan Boil It DownMichael Pollan’s mantra for what humans

should eat in order to be maximally healthy:

Eat Food.

Not too much.

Mostly plants.

Marion Nestle’s facetious rules for navigating the supermarket:

Always shop the periphery.

Don’t go into the center aisles.

If you do go into the center aisles, don’t buy anything with more than five ingredients.

If you can’t pronounce the ingredients on the label, don’t buy it.

Don’t buy anything with a cartoon on it.

If you don’t want your kids eating junk food, don’t have it in the home.
