12. Main Professional Qualifications:
Michalis’ career in tunnelling and geotechnical engineering is the combination of:
1. his successful involvement in a large number of tunneling and geotechnical designs of
significant infrastructure projects in Greece and overseas (Doha Metro, Athens Metro,
Egnatia Highway Project, Patras – Athens – Thessaloniki Highway Project etc.),
2. his involvement in the Independent Engineer’s teams for major Highway Concession
Projects in Greece (i.e. MOREAS Concession Highway Project, AEGEAN Motorways
Concession Highway Project, OLYMPIA ODOS Concession Project), and
3. his numerous scientific / academic work in the areas of Geotechnical Engineering,
Foundations and Tunneling in weak rock conditions.
More specifically, Michalis’ experience in tunneling engineering, includes among others: (i)
the design of different types of tunnels (railway, motorway and hydraulic tunnels), (ii) the risk
analyses of various methodologies of underground operations (i.e. TBM and NATM) for
metros, railway and motorway projects, and (iii) the active membership in working groups for
drafting relevant design and construction specifications, specifically within FIDIC
Contractual frameworks (Red Book, Yellow Book, Silver Book and Green Book).
Michalis geotechnical consulting services can be offered in the following areas: (i) Design of
Cuts and Embankments, (ii) Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations of complex
superstructures, (iii) Design of ground stabilization measures, (iv) Independent checking of
various geotechnical designs and (v) Evaluation of in-situ and laboratory geotechnical
investigation results.
Finally it has to be emphasized: (i) Michalis’ participation in the Technical Consulting Group
for the initial design and construction phase of Athens Metro Project, (ii) Michalis’ 5 year co-
operation with the Hellenic (Greek) Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport & Networks (2006 –
