History is determined selectively and what most people
experience as ‘real life’ is largely excluded from the imagery
and narrative which passes on. Michel Huneault’s
photographs in Histoires normales take a broader view
by bringing into the frame the discarded and disregarded, and
through these images of countries which are laden with
expectations largely drawn from mass media - including
Cuba, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bolivia, USA and
Ukraine - to stimulate the understanding in the viewer that
history is as much a stoic continuum as a series of dramatic
events. These striking photographic images capture moments
of remarkable ordinariness, marking the passing of an
ephemeral action within a setting laden with historical import.
As the photographer remarks; “These moments of remarkable
ordinariness - whose formality can appear staged (but it never is)
- seem to propose themselves as a truer descriptive; a more
authentic backbone of a common contemporary narrative.
History, but more real.”
Michel Huneault has an MA in Latin American Studies and
a Graduate Certificate in Peace and Conflict Resolution
Studies, both from UC Berkeley University. He worked for
several years in international development and peace-building
before being able to fully dedicate himself to his photographic
practice. His career has included roles as a Canadian
diplomat in Kandahar, an electoral observer in Haiti, Ukraine,
Palestine, and Bangladesh, and an NGO worker in Cuba and
Bolivia among other roles. In 2004, he was apprenticed to
Gilles Peress at Magnum Photo in New York City. This
became an important turning point for his photographic work,
which he now pursues professionally; taking on press and
public assignments as well as personal projects.
Among his recent Photographic Awards are Foto8 Award,
London, 2010, the Applied Arts Award for Photojournalism,
Canada, 2010; selection for the Leica Fottografie
International, 2010; First Prize in the LUX/CAPIC
Humanitarian Cause Canada 2009; First Prize in the
LUX/CAPIC Travel, Canada, 2009 and an Honourable
mention in the Prix de la Photographie Paris, 2009.
Michel Huneault was an Artist in Residence at Aberystwyth Arts
Centre’s Creative Units in 2010
Cyflwynir Hanes mewn ffordd ddetholus ac i raddau helaeth mae’r
hyn a brofir gan y rhan fwyaf o bobl fel ‘bywyd real’ yn cael ei adael
allan o’r delweddau a’r naratif a drosglwyddir ymlaen i’r genhedlaeth
nesaf. Mae ffotograffau Michel Huneault yn Histoires normales
yn edrych ar y darlun ehangach trwy ddod â’r hyn a daflwyd o’r
neilltu ac a ddiystyrwyd i mewn i’r ffrâm, a thrwy’r delweddau hyn o
wledydd sydd o dan faich disgwyliadau, oddi wrth y cyfryngau torfol
yn bennaf, gan gynnwys Ciwba, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan,
Bolivia, UDA ac Ukraine, maent yn gwahodd y gwyliwr i sylweddoli
wrth ystyried hanes bod y pethau cyffredin, o ddydd-i-ddydd, yr un
mor bwysig â chyfres o ddigwyddiadau dramatig. Mae’r delweddau
ffotograffig trawiadol hyn yn cyfleu eiliadau o gyffredinedd eithriadol,
gan osod gweithred ddibwys yn erbyn cefndir sy’n holl-bwysig yn
hanesyddol.
Fel y dywed y ffotograffydd: “Mae’r eiliadau hyn o gyffredinedd llwyr
- ac mae eu ffurfioldeb yn gwbl naturiol - fel pe baent yn cynnig eu
hunain fel disgrifiad mwy cywir; yn asgwrn cefn mwy dilys i’r naratif
cyfoes sy’n rhedeg ochr yn ochr. Yn Hanes, ond yn fwy real.”
Mae gan Michel Huneault MA mewn Astudiaethau Lladin-
Americanaidd a Gradd mewn Astudiaethau Heddwch a Datrysiad
Gwrthdaro, y ddwy radd o Brifysgol Berkeley. Gweithiodd am nifer o
flynyddoedd ym maes datblygiad ac adeiladu-heddwch rhyngwladol
cyn medru ymroddi’n gyfangwbl i’w ymarfer ffotograffig. Mae ei yrfa
wedi cynnwys rolau fel diplomydd Canadaidd yn Kandahar, gwyliwr
etholiadol yn Haiti, Ukraine, Palasteina, a Bangladesh, a gweithiwr
NGO yng Nghiwba a Bolivia ymysg swyddi eraill. Yn 2004, aeth yn
brentis i Gilles Peress ym Magnum Photo yn ninas Efrog Newydd.
Bu’r cyfnod hwn yn drobwynt pwysig yn ei waith ffotograffig sydd
erbyn hyn yn broffesiwn iddo; bellach mae’n ymgymryd â thasgau
cyhoeddus ac i’r Wasg yn ogystal â phrosiectau personol.
Ymysg ei Wobrau Ffotograffig diweddar yw Gwobr y Celfyddydau
Cymhwysol ar gyfer Ffoto-newyddiaduriaeth, Canada, 2010;
detholiad ar gyfer y Leica Fottografie Rhyngwladol, 2010;
Gwobr Gyntaf yn yr Achos Hiwmanitaraidd LUX/CAPIC Canada
2009; Gwobr Gyntaf yng nghystadleuaeth Deithio LUX/CAPIC,
Canada, 2009 a chyfeiriad Anrhydeddus yn y Prix de la
Photographie Paris, 2009.
Roedd Michel Huneault yn Artist Preswyl yn Unedau Creadigol Canolfan
y Celfyddydau Aberystwyth yn 2010
