SMART Notebook

I use the SMART Notebook 14 SoftwareAs this software is not something everyone

has readily available, I compiled a few interactive pages and displayed them on this PowerPoint.

Math

Students are able to choose different “pens” to practice writing numbers with different colors, patterns, etc. They can choose to write with the one of the 4 included pens, or simply write with their finger.

Students are given a set of objects, which supports one-to-one correspondence. They then sequence the sets of objects from least to greatest. This activity is self-check, which promotes independence.

This die is interactive and “rolls” just like a real die. Students must identify the number of dots shown and write the number below. This promotes identification of both sets of objects and numerals that match.

The fish are infinitely cloned, which allows students to place fish anywhere in the “ocean” scene. This activity promotes one-to-one correspondence as well as numeral recognition.

Reading

In this activity, students must sort –an and –at word family words. This sort is self-check. When the correct words are in the correct “tornado”, they get “sucked” in. When words are placed on the wrong “tornado”, they are “shot” back out.

This activity mimics the popular “memory” game. There are 12 words on 24 tiles, making 12 matches. When the student chooses a tile, it flips over and shows the word. The student then chooses another tile to see if they made a “match”. This activity is self-check, which promotes independence.

In this activity, students sort capital and lower case letters. This is an important foundational skill to support developing readers.

Writing

As paper is sometimes a very limited resource, the SMART board is a great option to for whole class writing, graphic organizers, and note taking. This is an example of a bubble map class brainstorming activity.

Writing

This is an example of a class writing we created about things we like to do at school. Students provided ideas for pictures, words, and spelling. Later in the year, students are able to do this activity independently during class writing time using the idea of “share the pen”.

Writing

Recognizing colors is an important science and life skill for early learners. This is an example of a graphic organizer classifying things that are red. The students provided ideas for the pictures and beginning sound labels.

Conclusion

SMART Notebook is a wonderful classroom tool. It can be used whole group, small group, and during independent work stations.
