2. STATE BIRD The Robin People of Michigan love the Robin The Robin is the most known bird here. 3. STATE FLOWER The apple blossom State flower since 1897 Climate allows the apple tree to grow here 4. Found in the northernlower peninsulaSTATE TREE The white pine (Part of the evergreenfamily) This tree was used for lumber Grows in the Northern part of the state. 5. STATE FISH The colorful brook trout About 8 to 10 inches long Blue, green, and red spots cover its sides. 6. STATE STONE The Petoskey Stone It is found on beaches near the city of Petoskey. Each of these stones are a fossil of a piece of ancient coral.Petoskey, MI 7. The reason we have coral fossils is because Michigan used to becovered in water! 8. STATE GEM The green-stone Gems are found on the Isle Royale (an island in Lake Superior). Made the state gem in 1973.Isle Royale 9. STATE SOIL Kalkaska soil Found in the city of Kalkaska (in our lower peninsula). Reminds people how important soil is to Michigan. 10. STATE REPTILE The painted turtle Chosen in 1995 Students voted for the reptile. 11. STATE GAME MAMMAL The whitetail deer Over 1 million deer live here! How many of you have seen one? 12. STATE WILDFLOWER The dwarf lake iris Very hard to find Very small flower 13. STATE FOSSIL Mastodon bones Look like hairy elephants Was voted the state fossil a few years ago. 14. STATE FLAG AND SEAL Most of the flag is bright blue and has our seal in the middle. 15. Eagle with branchMan with one hand in the and oliveair representing peace,and a gun in the otherhand representing thewillingness to defend. Moose Elk Latin words (means ISun and water will defend)representingserenity. 16. HOW TO GET A STATE SYMBOL? Our state government in Lansing votes on each state symbol.
