THREE-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS | 1966, 1986, 2007

HEAD COACHTOM ANASTOS

Tom Anastos, a Michigan State alum-nus who has excelled in the sport of hockey as a player, coach, administra-tor, and visionary, is in his fifth season at the helm of the Michigan State Hockey program. Recognized by The Hockey News in five of the past nine years on the list of the 100 most influential and powerful people in the sport (most recently No. 46 in 2011), Anastos has an unrivaled passion for the game and savvy blend of administrative, business and communication skills, a Who’s Who list of connections, and has provided progressive vision and dynamic leadership for college hockey. He is currently the chair of the NCAA Hockey Rules Committee. While an outside-the-box hire when announced in March 2011, Anastos quickly set out to return his alma mater to national prominence. He guided the Spartans to a 19-16-4 overall record, fifth-place finish in the CCHA, and an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. During Anastos’ initial season, blueliner Torey Krug won five awards at the CCHA Awards banquet (matching the record number won by Shawn Horcoff in 2000), and garnered First Team All-America honors in addition to being a Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist. Anastos’ resume in hockey saw him both play and coach at his alma mater before stepping into an administrative role as the CCHA Commissioner from 1998-2011. He was a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State (1981-85) for former coach Ron Mason, and received his bachelor’s degree in construction management in 1987. He was in the first class of Michigan State players to skate exclusively in the CCHA after MSU left the WCHA as he helped the Spartans to three Great Lakes Invitational titles, a regular-season CCHA Championship in 1985, and four consecutive CCHA Tournament titles. His Spartan teams made four NCAA Tournament appearances, finishing fourth in the country in 1984 and losing a heartbreak-ing quarterfinal series to Providence in 1985. As a senior, he earned second-team all-conference honors and was named to the all-tournament teams at the CCHA Tournament and Great Lakes Invitational. The sixth-round pick of Montreal (124th overall) played one season in the Canadiens organization, then joined the coaching staff at the University of Michigan-Dearborn where he served as head coach of that program from 1987-90, com-piling a 68-37-7 record. In the fall of 1990, Anastos returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Ron Mason for two seasons. Those two teams went a combined 43-28-13, and in 1991-92, advanced to the Frozen Four. Prior to his appointment to the CCHA, Anastos was the commissioner of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) for four seasons. In his role as CCHA commissioner, he oversaw the growth and changes in the membership over 13 years, and in April 2010, the CCHA played host to the record-breaking 2010 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four at Ford Field in Detroit, the first Frozen Four to be held in a non-traditional hockey venue. In concert with his role of CCHA commissioner, Anastos served as the president of the Hockey Commissioner’s Association (HCA).

Did you know... Anastos is one of 24 college hockey head coaches coaching their alma mater.

THEY SAID IT...The Year in Quotes

Michael Ferrantino, on the Spartans’ goal to score 100 goals this season (Sept. 30, 2015)...

“I think we can do it because we have a lot of guys that are poised and ready to break out and have good seasons. I think there’s going to be a com-mittee of guys that step up to that.”

Mackenzie MacEachern, on elevating his game this season (Sept. 30, 2015)...

“Last year we tasted success toward the second half, so this summer I took that mentality and wanted to mold myself into a championship type player. I really took that personally this summer. I came back and feel really good.”

Tom Anastos, on the physical condition of the freshmen class (Sept. 30, 2015)...

“Our strength and conditioning coach, Mike Vorkapich, told me that they have demonstrated a work ethic and a standard of commitment that is as good as he can remember here for a fresh-man group. Their test scores have been off the charts for incoming players.”

What’s New at MunnThe updates at Munn Ice Arena continued this summer as all arena seating was replaced. The five middle seating sections on both the north and south sides are now all chairback seats, while all remaining bench seats were replaced with new aluminum benches. New ADA plat-forms were also installed. The new Munn Arena seating capacity is 6,114, which includes 2,927 chairback seats. The improvements at Munn Arena since 2014 include a new ice plant and HVAC systems, new boards and glass, new high-definition video boards, LED ribbon boards, theatrical lighting as well as concourse and dressing room décor.

Alums Join Coaching Staff A pair of former Spartan standouts, Jason Muzzatti and Brad Fast, have rejoined MSU’s hockey program. Muzzatti, who played at MSU from 1987-91, took over the role as the team’s volunteer goaltending coach in July. Fast, who was an All-American and Academic All-American while captaining the Spartans in 2002-03, is the new director of hockey operations.

He’s a Hall of FamerMichigan State athletic trainer Dave Carrier was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in June. Carrier, who is in his 32nd season with the Spartan hockey team, is the third athletic trainer currently at MSU to be elected to the NATA Hall of Fame.

One of the most respected athletic trainers in the sport, Carrier’s international hockey experience includes having served as the athletic trainer for the 1988 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team in Calgary, and the 1990 U.S. Hockey Team at the World Championship in Bern, Switzerland.

Spartans on TVMichigan State will have a minimum of 16 games televised this season, including six on Fox Sports Detroit, five on BTN, four on Comcast Channel 900 and one on ESPNEWS. Additionally, BTN will televise all five games of the Big Ten Tournament, March 17-19 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

All games broadcast by Fox Sports Detroit and Comcast Channel 900 can also be streamed live on BTN2Go.com.

TBDGame times for two Spartan contests have yet to be determined this season. The Saturday, Nov. 21 contest vs. Michigan Tech will be played at either 4 p.m. or 7 p.m., de-pending on the start time of the MSU-Ohio State football game that day. A game time will be determined no later than six days prior. A time for the Jan. 23 exhibition game vs. the US National Team Development Program U-18 is also still to-be-detrmined.

IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE ATMUNN ICE ARENA

Munn Ice Arena turned 40 years old last fall and has received several upgrades over the last two years as a part of a larger-scale building renovation, greatly enhancing both the student-athlete and fan experience. The initial phase of building enhancements, made possible through private support, included:

• Theatrical lighting - installed in Oct. 2014• New high-definition video boards - installed in late Dec. 2014• LED ribbon boards - installed in Dec. 2014• Chairback seating - installed summer 2015• New concourse décor - installed in Nov. 2014• Dressing room décor - installed in Oct. 2014

Fundraising efforts for the major renovation continue.

The building has undergone various improvements over the past two years. In the spring of 2014, the building’s HVAC systems, ice surface, dasher boards and glass were all completely replaced at the cost of over $6 million. Prior to the start of the 2013-14 season, energy-efficient LED lighting was installed for approxi-mately $575,000.

Munn Ice Arena has provided an undeniable advantage as Spartan teams have posted a collective all-time winning percentage of .700 in the building. Since its opening, over 4,785,000 fans have attended a total of 806 Spartan hockey regular-season and playoff games at Munn Arena.

The behind-the-scenes look at Michigan State hockey will return to Fox Sports Detroit this fall.
