VolunteersThe Michigander depends on its volunteers. Without their dedication, we would not be able to do what we do. Our volunteers assist in the months leading up to the ride and for the duration of the ride in every conceivable position. During the ride, you will recognize our volunteers by their orange tee shirts. Not only do they make this ride run well, they have a wealth of information, are well versed in cycling, cycling tours and are happy to assist.

6-Day Michigander Bicycle TourThe 6-Day Michigander is designed to be a touring ride, which averages 50 miles each day. While it starts and finishes in the same town, it moves from town to town, which makes for a rich bicycle vacation experience.
Tour Rules• You must wear a bicycle helmet. No exceptions.• Rules of the road apply; same rights and duties as the driver of any other vehicle.• Ride single file where necessary, maximum of two abreast when conditions allow, do not impede traffic. (We ask all cyclists to ride single file on M-22 per request of the Sheriff’s Dept.)• Ride as far right as is safe. Obey all traffic lights, signs and regulations. • Look both ways before proceeding across intersections. Yes, every time.• Pass on the left only, announce “on your left” when approaching others.• Use hand signals to indicate road hazards, stopping, slowing, right and left turns• Prepare properly – nutrition, hydration, training, sun protection, weather conditions...• Respect others: riders, volunteers, host communities, motorists, pedestrians, law enforcement.• Respect the environment.• No headphones while riding.• No texting/no talking on cellphones while riding.• Accidents often occur in pacelines; if you are inexperienced with drafting, do not draft.
Page 6
The Art of the Hand SignalGroup riding is an art form and as such, it is especially important to use hand signals. Whether you are new to group riding or a seasoned veteran take time to review and use the following signals.
• Turn Right - Extend your right arm perpindicular to your body at least 10 yards before turning. Turn Left - Extend your left arm perpindicular to your body at least 10 yards before turning.
• Stop - Put your hand in a fist behind you in the small of your back.• Road Hazard - Extend your left or right arm (whichever side the hazard is on) and point toward the hazard, circle
your arm for emphasis.• Gravel - Extend your left or right arm with your hand open (whichever side the obstacle is on) and point toward the
gravel, and wiggle your fingers.• Hazard on the Shoulder - Extend your left or right arm (whichever side the shoulder is on) straight out (much like a
turn signal) then bend your elbow and place your palm open to the small of your back at least two or three times if time permits to indicate the hazard and get the attention of the riders behind you.
• Pay Attention - Riding near a disorganized and distracted cyclist is dangerous for you and everyone behind you. Place your arm behind your back and pat your butt to indicate the rider’s lack of awareness.
• Pull Through - Once you are done leading the pack...with your hands on both handlebars, lift your right or left elbow out away from your body, depending on which side of the pack you intend to drift back on and move out.
Page 7
Road MarkingWe have a new way of route marking this year (it is no longer permitted to use spray chalk on the roadways). Look for the following signs for turns and the Confidence pin markers in hot pink along the route (sample pin markers will be displayed at the Information Hub).
Michigander Directional Signs:

Featured Trails 6-Day: July 17-22, 2017Betsie Valley TrailExtending 22 miles, this rail trail rolls from Frankfort through Elberta and Beulah to Thompsonville, where an easy backroad jaunt take us to Crystal Mountain Resort. The trail is asphalt to Beulah, then from Beulah to Thompsonville (13 miles), compacted aggregate. For those using road bikes, follow the road route out of Beulah. This trail slopes gently through the Betsie River Valley along the shore-line of Lake Michigan, the south shore of Crystal Lake, a state forest, marshland, a game refuge, farmland and the 19th century ghost town of Homestead.
Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Nestled in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail runs about 22 miles between Empire and Bohemia Road, connecting to park attractions and the town of Glen Arbor. Most of the trail is asphalt, except for a 3 mile crushed stone span in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District.Riding through Sleeping Bear is unreal, from base of the dunes at Empire, through the fragrant cedar forest to the museums, blacksmith shop, general store, and beaches of Glen Haven, there is nothing quite like this to be found anywhere else in the world.
Leelanau TrailStretching over 15 miles through the last of the Leelanau County railway corridors, the Leelanau Trail connects Suttons Bay to Traverse City. The paved trail route features rolling hills, lush forests, picturesque orchards, peaceful meadows, and an aquatic medley of streams, lakes and ponds. Created by Grand Traverse Edible Trails there are two food forests along the trail; Cedar Creek Food Forest next to Realeyes Homestead, and DeYoung Forest Garden at the DeYoung Natural Area (SAG). The Leelanau Trail is part of the Tart Trails network

Happenings: 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - BBQ Lunch, Crystal Mountain Resort; reasonably priced bbq fare, salads, snacks, cold drinks and more. 8:00 p.m. - Americana Concert with Kubat, Finlay & Rose, Camp Tent, Frankfort High School.Crystal Mountain Resort, Thompsonville (SAG)Ride the Loki Quad chairlift to the top of the mountain, then hop on a sled and cruise down one of the 250-foot-high, 1,700-foot-long curved tracks as they dip and dive their way down the mountain on the Crystal Coaster – Michigan’s one and only Alpine Slide. Hit up their mountain bike trails, take a nature hike or head into the spa. A favorite past time is strolling in the forested beauty and culture of the Michigan Legacy Art Park.Ellie Harold Fine Art Studio & Gallery An award-winning and prolific artist, she paints vibrant landscapes, still life, and abstractions in oil. The gallery is open for viewing and tours of her colorful 1895 Victorian Era home (11:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m.) 402 Forest Avenue, Frankfort. Frankfort Light & Downtown FrankfortCatch sunrise or sunset at the 1912 Lighthouse on Lake Michigan on the north breakwater in Frankfort’s harbor. Then hang out in town, its charming, filled with nice shops, restaurants and Stormcloud Brewing Company.

Saturday, July 22: Day 6: Traverse City to FrankfortSAG 1: Holmestead Farms SAG 2: Lake Ann State ParkSAG 3: Saint Ambrose Cellars SAG 4: Beulah TrailheadHappenings 10:00-3:00pm Finish Line-Frankfort High School: You did it! Yes, you did! Cake, Lemonade and the one and only Sam Kennedy with his checkered flags waving you in as you complete the tour! Note: This is Sam’s last Michigander as he and his family are moving to Florida. Hugs galore are in order!Holmestead Farms-Our first SAG is a lovely 8 year old CSA Farm whose motto is “we keep the flavors in and the chemi-cals out.” Their goal is to grow the best vegetables and cut flowers possible in a natural way. The chickens are fed non-GMO feed and they have great tasting eggs. Shop away and we will bring it back to the finish line for you.Lake Ann State Park-This park features Lake Ann Pathway. What started out as an interpretive trail in the late 1970s is now a popular multi-use trail with the scenic overlooks and the quiet nature of the area. In less than 4 miles, view four lakes, skirt three bogs, and follow a stretch of the Platte River. From swamps and lakes to a trout stream, few trails in Michigan display so much water in such a short distance.Saint Ambrose Cellars-They started as – and remain – beekeepers. Learn about their journey into mead, wine, and beer. Traditional meads, melomels, pyments, and more – these honey wines are what they built the business on. A selection of complimentary tastes, then flights and beers available in the tasting room. Awesome Food Truck on site serving a great variety of munchables. Shop away and we will bring it back to the finish line for you.Lunch Picks: Food Truck, St. Ambrose Cellars; The Cherry Hut, L’Chayim Delicatessen, Beulah; Lighthouse Cafe, Elberto’s Taqueria, Elberta; Stormcloud Brewing, Crescent Bakery, Port City Smokehouse, The Fusion, Frankfort.
