National Aeronautics and Space Administration messenger michoud Volume 4, Issue 11 November 1, 2012 | SLS Program Seeks Industry Partners On Oct. 24, NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility hosted an Indus- try Day to attract industry participa- tion in the Space Launch System (SLS) Program. The day’s events attracted approximately 175 indi- viduals, and provided attendees with information and updates on SLS-related business opportuni- ties. More than 90 private com- panies were represented, plus 16 government and non-proft entities including NASA. Michoud Director Roy Malone and Marshall Space Flight Center Director Patrick Scheuermann wel- comed participants to Michoud and introduced a series of overview presentations. Michoud Deputy Director Robert Champion talked about the facility’s extensive capa- bilities and its transformation into a multi-tenant community anchored by the SLS and Orion programs. Todd May, manager of the SLS Program Offce, gave a brief over- view of the program’s accomplish- ments and outlined its next steps. “In a year, we were able to take the SLS components through Systems Requirements Review and System Defnition Review, and I’m pleased to report that we are on track by December of this year to take the Core Stage into Pre- liminary Design Review -- a full fve months prior to our original com- mitment,” May said. Director Patrick Scheuermann held an All Hands meeting at Mi-choud The meeting was held in Bldg 351 East where Scheuer-mann told the standing-room-onlycrowd how excited he was to return to Michoud A native of New Orleans

Scheuermann served as Mi-choud director prior to his serviceat Stennis Space Center He thanked the crowd for their hard work and reminded them that ev-ery employee who comes throughthe gate has a stake in Michoudrsquos success ldquoWe want everyone to be

proactive with new ideas for im-proving our workplacerdquo Scheuermann said ldquoSince we are on the critical path to building the SLS Core Stagewe canrsquot afford to do things inefficiently and we certainly canrsquot afford to do things in an unsafe manner Everyemployee brings value to the table -- and together we will succeed in building a rocket that will carry explorersout into the solar systemrdquo
