The following guidelines are designed to assist you with the placement and formatting of fields on your check. These guidelines are based on industry standards. Your financial institution may have different specifications and requirements, so please check with your bank for any specific check layout guidelines.  

Pre‐formatted check and stub layouts from the Mekorma MICR Check Format Library were used to capture the screen shots shown in this document. The check formats are shown using the Mekorma MICR Configurator layout tool. The guidelines in this document are applicable for U.S. check formats only.

Company Logo

The best place to position a company logo is to the left of the organizational name. The optimum size is 1” high by 1” wide or 1” high by 1½” wide. When using MICR, we recommend keeping the size of the logo bitmap file under 50KB (kilobytes). Mekorma MICR only supports a grayscale or black and white .bmp (bitmap) format for image file.

Company Name and Address

The company name and address should be placed in the upper left quadrant of the check. Use a 10 point bolded font for the name and either an 8 or 10 point regular font for the address.  Do not use script fonts on your check face. 

Left justify the name and address with a small space between the logo and the heading, if you are using a logo. If there is no logo, you can left or center justify the company name and address. Make sure the company name and address is visible inside the upper window of a window envelope.

Bank Name

The bank name and location should be positioned at the top of the check area 4½” to 5” from the left edge of the check. You can have just the bank name and omit an address (some banks prefer this). Use an 8 point bolded or regular font for the bank name. If you place an address under the bank name, a minimum of three lines of text is required.

ABA Number/Fractional Routing Number

The ABA number or Fractional Routing Number can be placed under the bank name or to the right of the bank name using a 6 to 8 point regular font. This number helps a bank identify where the check needs to be routed in the Federal Reserve System if, for any reason, hand processing is required.  

NOTE

This ABA Number is NOT the Transit Number located in the MICR line.  

An ABA or Fractional Routing Number can be composed of many numbers or just a few. The best method is to use numbers is from an existing pre‐printed check. Some examples of an ABA Number are 16‐66/1220, 18‐603/1010, or 1‐2/1000.  

You enter the Fractional Routing Number in the Transit (ABA) Number field on the Mekorma MICR Setup (Payables or US Payroll) dialog boxes.

Check Number

Used strictly as a control number for visual identification, the Arabic Check Number is placed in the upper right quadrant of the check. There is no font size requirement, but we recommend using a font size that is less than 12 points.

Legal Dollar Amount/Amount in Words

The Legal Dollar Amount is also known as the Amount in Words. The best place to position it is between the organizational name and the Payee’s name. It is important to place the legal dollar amount so that is does NOT appear in the envelope window you are using.

Date and Courtesy Dollar Amount

The Check Payment Date and the Courtesy Dollar Amount are usually set together, with the date positioned on the left and the amount on the right. You can place them on the same line or lower as the Legal Dollar Amount, but they must be at least 1½” from the bottom edge of the check. The Courtesy Dollar Amount is the numeric dollar amount located to the right of the Legal Dollar Amount. 

TIP

Some check stocks include boxes for individually positioning date characters or other date alignment characters such as MMDDYYYY. In Mekorma MICR 9.0b20 and later, you can use individual date fields to control the positioning of each character. See the “Individual Date Digits” section of the Mekorma MICR User Guide.pdf file for more information.

Payee Name and Address

The Payee name and address are printed in the lower left quadrant of the Check. The name and address should appear in the envelope window. It is a Postal requirement that the name and address font at least an 8 point regular font. The optimal font to use is a 10 point regular font. A minimum of three lines of text is required for the Address.

Signatures

If you are printing signatures, it is important that the bottom edge of any descending characters such as f, g, j, p, q, y, or z are a minimum of 5/8” from the bottom edge of the check. The signature should not touch the MICR line area. If any of these characters are too close to the check’s bottom edge, the bank may pick up that image and give a false MICR line reading.

MICR Line

The following sections provide some general guidelines for the MICR line fields. The MICR line is composed of five areas. Three of the areas are printed by the user from Mekorma MICR and the other two are added by the financial institution.

Sample Check with MICR Line: 

 

There are sixty‐five positions to the MICR line and they are numbered 1 – 65, reading from right to left because that is how the bank’s equipment reads the line. The numbers and symbols for the MICR line are entered on the Mekorma MICR Setup (Payables or US Payroll) dialog boxes. The placement of numbers within the MICR line is controlled by the boxes in which they are entered on the setup dialog box. 

Your financial institution has specifications that tell you in which positions they require the various components of the MICR line. The MICR line is positioned on the check automatically by Mekorma MICR. Under most circumstances, you do not need to adjust the line.  

IMPORTANT

Your financial institution’s specifications may vary and should override these guidelines. 

Auxiliary On‐US Field 

The Auxiliary On‐Us field is the left side component of the MICR line and is located in positions 58 to 45 on a MICR gauge. 

 

The Auxiliary On‐Us field can be blank or it can contain the numbers that match the Arabic check number on the top right quadrant of the check. The check number is generally six digits, but may contain as few as five digits or as many as ten.

If the Auxiliary On‐Us field contains the check number, it may also contain one or two On‐Us symbols. On the Mekorma MICR Setup (Payables or US Payroll) dialog boxes, the On‐Us symbol is indicated by the letter “C”. 

Transit/Routing Number Field 

The Transit/Routing Number Field is always nine digits in addition to the Transit symbols that bracket the numbers (in Canada, the field is usually five digits, a dash symbol, and three more digits). The Transit/Routing Number field is the middle component of the MICR line and is located in positions 43 to 33 on a MICR gauge.  

 

The Transit symbol is indicated by the letter “A” on the Mekorma MICR Setup (Payables or US Payroll) dialog boxes. 

On‐Us Field 

The On‐Us field contains the bank account number. It is the right component of the MICR line, is located in positions 32 to 15 on a MICR gauge, and may include blank spaces or a dash symbol.  

 

The On‐Us field may also contain the check number or the On‐Us symbol if they are not in the Auxiliary On‐Us field.

External Processing Code (EPC) 

The External Processing Code (EPC) is located in position 44 on a MICR gauge. This position should be blank unless a bank has given written permission to place a number there. This field was designed for banks to build a degree of intelligence into the MICR line, but is rarely used anymore. 

Amount Field 

The Amount field is filled in by the bank that first accepts the check for deposit. It should not be filled in by the check writer unless there is written permission from the financial institution to do so. The Amount field is located on the far right side of the MICR line and occupies positions 14 to 1, including the Amount symbols.  

 

Printing the Amount in the MICR line is not supported for Mekorma MICR.
