microdia, a creator

microdia is nowadays one of the oldest cross head makers,it has been growing during three decades, passingprogressively from a small tip & die workshop to a renowncross head creator whose expertise is recognized by wire& cable makers as well as extrusion lines builders all overthe world.

Following the evolution of the wire & cable industrymicrodia has been constantly monitoring its customersneeds in order to offer the best product, precise, durableand reliable.

Following their own vision without consideration towardothers concepts, microdia’s designers choose more than 30 years ago to make a square shaped cross head andheat it with internal cartridges instead of common bandor plate heaters.

After three successive generation of cross heads: mf, 9000and avantis , microdia’s cross heads are still square with rodheaters. Standard tooling (tips & dies) and centerlinecompatibility has been kept to avoid the need of extruderlay lout change when a new microdia cross head isinstalled.

However, romex series is the exception to the rule ! Thereason is the increasing rise of all highly alloyed steels andsome demand for an economical family of cross heads.

Nevertheless microdia is still intensively investing in newproduct development in order to remain the preferredsupplier of wire & cable makers and extrusion linemanufacturers and their problem solver.

100 KILOWATT OF POWER FOR FREE !More than 700 square meters of photovoltaic cells installed onthe roofs of 2 of microdia’s buildings in Yverdon-les-Bains,develop a power of more than 100 KVA and can produce yearlyabout an average of 120 MW/h. which will be injected into thepublic network.

The nineties: mf 9000In response to the market demand, asking for a cross headeasier to handle with shorter tooling change time andhigher precision microdia engineers designed the first mf9000-10, immediately followed by larger models coveringan overall diameter range of 0.1 mm to 160 mm.mf 9000 series now includes fixed & manual centeringheads, double, triple layers; double, triple layers + stripe;cross flow quick color change and many more...

The 21st century: avantisTo cope with the challenges posed by the newtechnological compounds, it was necessary to have aneven more versatile cross head design whilst remaining fullycompatible with the earlier cross head type in terms ofadaptability and tooling; avantis was the response.

Strongly built according to microdia tradition, avantis crossheads allow heavily loaded compounds and high viscositypolymers to be efficiently extruded at reduced pressure andhigher speed.

ecomex the green:Derived from the avantis concept, ecomex has beenengineered with the aim of improving biopolymersextrusion conditions. Although it looks like an avantis, thehead block has been redesigned in order to reduce dragand friction heating during compound transit through thecross head, allowing higher speed without productalteration.

microdia heads with microflex fitting are fixed center heads with finemanual tuning.

Tuning is made via 4 axial or radial adjusting screws. The dieassembly just tilts thanks to a flexible element, part of the head’sfront part.

Advantages:

1- No leak because of no sliding parts .2- Adjustment possible during the run.

When all 4 screws are released the cross head works as a fixedcenter cross head giving a fairly good level of concentricityapproaching 0.95.

Once the line has reached its stable operating condition, trimmingcan be performed to bring the concentricity factor close to 1. This sketch illustrates the way die position is adjusted

via the FLEX elements.
