Microorganism Project !Microorganisms include all unicellular and multicellular

microscopic life forms: bacteria, protozoa and archea. They inhabit

every part of the biosphere ranging from hot springs to fi゙sh ponds,

and deep oceans to inside the human body. While some may cause

us harm, many others are essential to our health and development.

Only recently has science began to understand their value and

complex roles these microscopic creatures play on our environment.

The ability to observe microorganism fi゙rst hand is the fi゙rst step to

understanding their importance.

Objectives

✦ Students will differentiate various types of microorganisms

✦ Students will explain the importance of a healthy population

of microorganisms

✦ Students will demonstrate proper use of microscopes

1(C-b1) Microorganism Project

MICROORGANISM PROJECT!!!

!AS PART OF THIS DIGITAL BUS PROJECT, YOU AND YOUR TEAM WILL…!!

Collect water samples from one or multiple locations!Use Digital Microscopes to look for microorganisms!Record your data on the Data Sheet!Illustrate your findings!Conduct further research and present your findings.!

MICROORGANISM PROJECT: DATA SHEET!!!

!!!

!!!!Our field project will include 3 parts:!!!

1. Quantity of Microorganisms. You and your group will collect samples of pond water in the jars. You will add a small amount to a petri dish and observe it under the microscope!!

2. Types of Microorganisms. You and your group will use the ID cards provided to determine the types of Microorganisms you have found and/or provided with. !!

3. Illustrations. Individually you will draw your findings.!!!!!!!!!!!!

GROUP NUMBER:

1. Quantity of Microorganisms. You and your group will collect samples of pond water in the jars. You will add a small amount to a petri dish and observe it under the microscope. !

A. Count approximately how many microorganisms you find in your sample.!B. Count approximately how many microorganisms you find in the sample we

collected from the plankton tow.!C. Count approximately how many microorganisms you find in the cultured

sample provided to you.!!!

!!!2. Types of Microorganisms. In your sample, try to determine what are the three

most common types of microorganisms found.!!
