This project presented multiple challenges for the

project team. The first, and most significant, was

overcoming serious errors made during the original

design of the new facility. Methuen Construction

worked closely with the new design team and the

Town to make the needed revisions to the scope,

construction schedule and equipment to ensure the

completion of a successful project. The owner

acknowledged MC’s willingness to resolve issues in an

“efficient, cost effective, and expeditious manner.”

1.5 MGD Water Treatment Facility utilizing Membrane

Ultra Filtration to remove iron and manganese from the

drinking water supply. Work included construction of a

new Masonry building above concrete holding tanks,

replacement of existing well pumps, Ozone Generation,

Compressed Air, Membrane Filtration, Chemical Feed,

and SCADA systems. The scope of work also included

upgrades to the existing Waterworks building, a

Backwash Filter Structure, new Septic System and

    various MEP elements.

Methuen was able to successfully complete the project

on-time and well under the Town of Wayland’s budget,

    without impacting the environmentally protected

Baldwin Pond ecosystem or Wayland Waterworks

    operations.

The Crystal Lake Water Treatment Facility is a new facility designed to treat and deliver to

the City of Gardner water distribution system a minimum of 3 million gallons per day.

Construction of the main treatment building was on the shore of Crystal Lake and required

continuous protection of the lake during the construction project. The project included a

twenty-four inch diameter supply line that extended one-hundred feet into the lake and was

secured in a saddle to assure continuous supply. Primary filtration consists of four trains of

Koch membrane ultra-filtration systems. Each train is capable of delivering One Million

gallons of finished water. Normal operation is with three trains in operation and one on

    standby.

SCOPE OF SERVICESGeneral Contractor including self-performed site work, concrete, yard piping, structural steel, wood frame construction, equipment installation, process and chemical piping, and coordination of system startup.

Before the construction of these plants, the Town had to field an average of ten calls per day regarding water quality. Since going on line in the Spring of 2003, the calls have been non-existent. Typically, on a public project the Contractor builds strictly ac-cording to the plans and specs. Through value engineering ef-forts of the Methuen Construction team, we were able to make changes which resulted in added value to the Owner without significant changes in the cost. When we asked the Owner to grade us on our service, we received an average of +2.78 within a scale of -3 to +3, with more than 80% of the marks scoring a +3. This is a valued measurement in regard to customer satis-faction at Methuen Construction, and this project also met the ultimate goal: the ability to provide pure drinking water to the residents of Westford.

The Westford Water Treatment Plants consisted of a 14,540 square foot facility at the Forge Village site and an 11,230 square foot facility at the Nutting Road site. Each plant treats up to 3-million gallons per day of water from the town’s 8 wells. Construction of the facilties included the installation of three 10’ diamater by 37’ long pressurized green sand filters; chemical feed systems consisting of Potassium Hydroxide, Potassium, Permanganate, Aluminum Sulfate, and Sodium Fluoride; MIOX generators; Ultraviolet purification; Aeration towers; and sup-porting equipment and piping.

    Installed new well pumps

Methuen Construction was the general contractor on this project to

provide a new water clarification system for the Leominster Notown

Water Treatment Facility. A New Chemical Feed building was built that

houses three (3) chemical tanks, mechanical room, fire pump room and

two (2) 6-MGD raw water pumps. Work also included modifications to the

existing Well House and the rehabilitation of three (3) existing wells,

which included removing the existing pumping equipment and installing

new pumping equipment. Additionally, the project included the installation

of a 24” water main from the water treatment plant to an existing water

    storage tank.

The construction of this filtration facility into the

sloping site allowed continuation of the use of the

existing gravity fl ow system and its associated

benefits. Treated water is discharged into a two-

zone, 2-million gallon storage tank, and then into

the adjoining existing 36-inch diameter water

transmission main that serves the regional water

    district.

Design of the main treatment facility yielded a

compact, lowprofile building that resulted in ground

level access being provided to both levels. It further

resulted in an easy to maintain and operate facility

    with future expansion capability.

    General Contractor including self-performing site

work, excavation, concrete, yard piping, process

    piping, civil, lagoons, buildings, equipment

installation, and coordination of plant start-up.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In order to maintain continued use of the

gravity system, the storage tank was built

as a low-profi le reinforced concrete

    underground tank with two one-million

    gallon zones.

Sequenced replacement invloved three sand media fi lters, four dual media fi lters, and four carbon fi lters. Post-disinfecting was converted from chlorine gas to to liquid sodium hypochlorite.

The project further included installation of analytical and pro-cess instruments to be incorporated into a new control system, a new ventilation system for the offi ce space within the building, a new boiler, miscellaneous door replacements, and installation of a stand-by generator for the pumping station with appurtenant utilities and services.

were required to maintain ongoing operation of the water supply system while performing a major conversion of the facilities. The facility includes a 10 mgd fi ltration plant, a 20 mgd fi ltration plant, and a 30 mgd raw water pumping station. Working together with the owner and engineer, Methuen established a phased con-struction schedule for the facility, sequenced to seasonal water demand cycles. We succeeded in completing the project safely, on budget, and per the mutually agreed upon shedule.

Construction also included the conversion from chlorine di-oxide for pre-oxidation and pre-disinfecting, and conversion
