Exercise 1: Create a Calendar with Desktop Publisher Open Microsoft Office Publisher by double clicking the icon on the desktop.

1. Select Signs by double-clicking on the icon. A menu of sign templates will open.

2. Choose Car Wash Fundraiser Sign by double-clicking on the icon. Microsoft Publisher will open your template in the workspace for customizing.

3. Customize the template to suit your event:

Change the title: click on the text box. MS Publisher will highlight the box, and the text is now customizable. Type in an new event title (e.g. Bake Sale Fundraiser).

Highlight the text and change the font size to 130. You may have to do this manually: go to the font size option and click on the number, type in 130.

Change the font colour to purple. Fill in the rest of the information.

4. Add photos:

Go to the Insert tab and click on Clip Art.

Search for another picture by entering keywords (e.g. cupcakes) inside the Search For box located on the right side under Clip Art.

Tick the check box Include Office.com Content, and click on the Go button.

Resize the picture by dragging the corner up or down, left or right. Click-and-drag it to another position in the flyer.

5. Close the project: click on File at the top of the page, and then Close.

Exercise 2: Create a Calendar with Microsoft Publisher

1. From the menu, double-click on Calendars.

2. Select the calendar template called Echo by double-clicking on the image icon.

3. Customize your calendar:

Click on the Page Design tab.

Change the Color Scheme by clicking on your preference. The window will preview your selection.

4. Choose a one year per page Timeframe under Options, and click on Set Calendar Dates by selecting current year. (e.g. 2013). Note this option may not be available for every template.

5. Click on Create.

6. Close as before. To save or print, see appendixes.

Exercise 3: Create a Newsletter with Microsoft Publisher

1. Click the Newsletters icon from the templates menu.

2. Select a Newsletter Soft Blue and download.

3. Click on the picture in the top right corner. MS Publisher will highlight. Press the delete button to remove the picture.

4. Go to the Insert tab and click on Clip Art.

5. Add a picture: Search with keywords (e.g. cake, in keeping with the bake sale poster) inside the Search For box. Be sure to check inside the box, Include Office.com content, and click the Go button.

6. Click twice on the first image of a cake image and it will automatically be inserted into the newsletter. Resize the image by dragging the corners

7. Edit the newsletter title by clicking in the box and rename it.

8. Edit the text by clicking inside the text box and change the text (e.g. Bake Sale Quarterly, and then report on the success of the bake sale.)

Appendix 1: Save a Document on a Library Computer

Note: Documents must be saved to USB keys, or saved to the P: drive and emailed immediately to the owner. Any documents saved to the P: drive will automatically be deleted when the session ends.

To save a Microsoft document, click on File and select Save As.

When you click on Save As, it will open a dialog box that prompts you to name your document and choose which location to save your work as shown below.

Naming a document:

1. At the bottom of the Save As screen is a box labeled File name: 2. Click inside the File name box using your left mouse button 3. In the box type:

Hint: Save your document often. Computers may “freeze” or “crash” and you will lose your work if you have not saved it.

Where to save a file: Plug your USB into one of the computer’s USB port(s) which are indicated by the symbol.

At the left, under Computer, notice Public (P:) The P: drive is a temporary drive and is cleared at the end of each computer session. DO NOT save to the P: drive if you wish to keep your information. To save to the USB, click on (D :) or (E :) at the left. The name of the USB is based on its manufacturer and may vary. Click the Save button, at the bottom, once you have confirmed your saving locations. Congratulations on saving your first Word document. Note: When you want to save a new document for the first time, select Save As, and afterwards click Save to save the same document to the same location.

Appendix B: Print a Document from a Library Computer

Print Preview and Print

Printing costs 15 cents per page at the library. For more detailed instructions about printing at a branch, please ask staff.

Click on File and select Print.

Even if you are not ready to print right now, a Print Preview screen will appear. This allows you to see the document before printing.

If there are multiple pages in your document, you can check them by clicking on the arrows, pointing left and right, near the bottom of the screen.

To leave Print Preview and return to your document, click on File.

There are a number of choices that can be done here via Settings.

If you wish to print more than one copy of your document, find the Copies box and enter your desired number or use the arrows. When you are ready to print, click Print.

If you wish to print a range of pages, such as 1-3 or 1, 5 select the down arrow beside Print All Pages, and then select the Print Custom Range option.

Type in your desired pages or page range; then, click Print.

A Print Manager Popup window will appear. Your document name will be displayed in the Job Name box. If there is no flashing cursor in the User ID box, click into it.

Type a User ID that is between four to eight characters or numbers in length.(e.g. billy) Next, click into the Password box if asked. Type in a password that is between four to eight numbers in length.(e.g. 1234) Make sure you remember both. Notice that the Pages box gives you the number of pages you will be printing out. Click Print.

Your document has been sent to the printer. If you need to cancel your job, press Cancel Job.

If needed, add money onto your Library Card or Print Card before going to the Print Station or Photocopier/Printer. At the Print Station or Photocopier/Printer, insert your Library Card or Print Card into the Carder Reader box and follow the instructions. If you need help, ask at the Information Desk.
