CITY CENTRE GRITTING PROCEDURE

This procedure has been set up in agreement with , Highways and City Centre Streetpride. The procedure gives details of when gritting is to be carried out in the city centre and how the contacts are made. PROCEDURE

1) The (Streetpride) Supervisor (or acting charge hand) or central area services manager (or acting manager) in the city centre will contact Ice Alert & ESU every day on arrival in the City Centre.

The charge hand (or acting charge hand) operative must ascertain from ESU whether a gritting call out has taken place during the night. NB: this must be done every morning from November until March.

PLAN X – NORMAL CONDITIONS

Streetpride will operate plan X in the following circumstances. If Coventry City Council begins a City wide gritting operation, then Streetpride City centre will grit. This Streetpride operation will start as soon as possible In any event at 5am each winter day the Streetpride Cleansing Supervisor will telephone the Ice Alert & ESU.

When a decision to salt has been made the following areas will be dealt with:

Exposed subway and car park ramps and steps

Car Park entrances and exits

Exposed precinct and central shopping areas steps and ramps

Central shopping areas

Magistrates Court

Civic Centre Footpaths

Crown Court

Magistrates Court

To prioritise these issues, three alternative plans can be put into action depending on the prevailing weather conditions. Plan X is the initial plan to be implemented with the decision on plan ‘Y’ and ‘Z’ being taken by the Highways & Streetpride city centre.

An extension of the gritting regime to include the following footpaths Bishop St City Arcade Council House Cox Street Corporation St Earl St Fairfax St High St Hales St Jordon Well Queen Victoria Road Warwick Row

PLAN Z - exceptional severity of conditions All available personnel will be deployed as directed by the Streetpride City Centre Manager or Deputy appropriate to the prevailing weather conditions.

PLAN "x" – "NORMAL " CONDITIONS

1. HIGHWAYS, LIGHTING AND SEWERS DLO

The gritting vehicles will be deployed by the Senior Duty Officer in accordance with the procedure given in the Winter Gritting Manual on their standard routes. During normal working hours Whitley Depot will service highway grit bins and requests from other Departments.

PLAN “Y”- SEVERITY 1 CONDITIONS Locations as plan “X” but additional resources from City Services DLO to be deployed as follows:

Resources utilized at listed suburban shopping areas and known “problem areas” 2. EXTERNAL SERVICES DLO

Resources given over to the Senior Duty gritting officer and deployed at listed suburban shopping areas and known “problem areas” in conjunction with Highway Lighting and Sewers DLO
