MCHS Named a Palmetto Gold School Congratulations to Mid-Carolina High School students,
faculty, staff, and parents. Mid-Carolina High School
earned the 2013-2014 Palmetto Gold Award in General
Performance. This award is to recognize and reward
schools for attaining high levels of student academic
achievement. “The Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards
program, founded in 1998, recognizes schools for general
performance and closing the achievement gap. Within
those two categories, a school may be awarded either the
gold or silver designation.” Being named Palmetto Gold is
a huge accomplishment that is the result of a lot of hard
work in the classroom on the part of our students, faculty,
and staff. Great job MCHS!

Congratulations to two of our students

Bowl and Hippology contests held at
Clemson University. Anya Mundell
competed in both competitions and
received 3rd high individual for the state
in Horse Bowl and 6th high individual
overall in Hippology. Hailey Mundell

Hippology. Both Anya and Hailey
were on the same team which won
2nd overall. They also received 1st
in the horse judging phase. In the
exam phase Hailey was 2nd and
Anya was 4th. They will both compete at regionals this
summer.
Horse Bowl is a quiz bowl contest where participants are
asked questions about horses and horse related topics.
Quick thinking is a must as you must activate your
electronic buzzer before your opponent in order to answer
the question and score points.
Hippology is the study of horses. This contest tests the
participants knowledge of horses and horse related items
from any aspect of the horse industry. Contest elements
include a written exam, horse judging, identification of
items and/or their uses, and solving a problem and
presenting the solution.
Horse judging turns the tables as youth try to match the
experts in deciding how a particular group of horse should
be ranked if they were competing in a show. Participants
place various types of classes (in hand and under saddle)
then give an oral presentatio n explaining how they ranked
the class and why.

Congratulations to Mr. Russell
Satterfield for being selected as
a Claes Nobel Educator of
Distinction, a special program
of the National Society of High
School Scholars that honors
educators worldwide. Mr.
Satterfield was nominated by
two students of Mid-Carolina
High School, Matthew Gentry
and Emily Livingston.
NSHSS believes that educators should be recognized for
their commitment and impact of our youth. This
recognition often means the most when it comes from those
who view their educator as a role model and positive
influence in their lives. NSHSS high school members are
given the opportunity to nominate, a single educator who
has made the most significant contribution to their
academic career.
Educators nominated as Educators of Distinction must be
an outstanding role model and positive influence, someone
who has made a lasting difference in the student's life by
encouraging them to strive for excellence as they become
the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.
In celebration of Black
History Month, Mid-
Carolina High School

Representatives, as our guest speaker. Representative
Hosey encouraged our students to do their absolute best,
and he reminded us that we must believe in ourselves in
order to accomplish anything in life. Special thanks to

Carolina have established the West Point
Leadership Award to recognize high
school juniors who exhibit the qualities
and ideals of the United States Military
Academy. The selection criteria for this
award include demonstrated excellence
in the areas of leadership, academics, athletics, community
service, and good citizenship.”
BAND
The SCBDA Concert Festival event is the formative
annual assessment of instrumental music programs in
South Carolina. We choose music literature that
demonstrates various fundamental music standards. The
grade level is a benchmark. The evaluation is similar to
standardized test or end of course exams given in other
school courses. A national standard of performance is
applied to our program because we bring in competent
judges. This evaluation serves to provide the opportunity
for program improvement, instructional guidance, and
accountability for learning.
This year the Mid-Carolina High School band entered into
Class IV (on a scale of I - VI with VI being the most
difficult) and earned an overall Superior rating. Equally
impressive was the earning of five straight superior ratings
including the two Superior ratings earned in Sight Reading
where the band members and director are given 6 minutes
to look over a piece of music that they have never seen and
then play it for the judges.
Thanks to each of you for all of your support of our band
program.

speak with her students about
choices and goals. His speech
was titled Key Principles for
Accomplishing Any Goal, and
from beginning to end he
engaged all learners in his
demonstration. He started with
an icebreaker and soul train
line, and he ended with a speech that inspired this group of
students to "Be Determined, Be Persistent, and Believe It's
Possible". Her students responded as follows:
1. "...My life has changed. I will try to improve...I
will work harder" - Jamorian Abney.
2. "I am determined that I can do it" - Marcellus

why can't I? That's what I am asking myself!"
- LaQuon Gallman

make it and graduate, but Tim told me that if I
believe in myself, then I can do it!" - David

a lot of things." - Isaac Williams
ARCHERY TEAM
Congratulations to the Mid-Carolina Archery Team. They
won 1st place in the 2014 SC NASP Tournament sponsored
by DNR at the Sportsman Classic on Friday, March 28.
This is the Rebels ninth consecutive year winning 1st place.
The team scored a total of 3270 points averaging 272.5
points per archer. Dalton Chapman was tied for second
place with a score of 284 in the male division before
having to shoot in front of a massive crowd for a tie-
breaker. The archers were to shoot 5 arrows from a
distance of 15 meters to see who would claim second
place. After matching scores on those five, the young men
had to shoot 1 arrow for closest to center in what most
sports call a double overtime. Dalton braved the first shot
and scored a 9 but was bettered by a ten from the other
archer. The consolation for Dalton, who is a senior, is 3rd
place and a $1000 scholarship for being the top 12th grade
male division archer. All archers on the team did a great
job shooting for Mid-Carolina to keep its tradition alive.
We are so proud of every MCHS Archery Team member,
Coach Jason Long, and Coach Jackie Harris!
The following students are on the 2014 archery team:
Thomas Kiker, Robbie Long, Will Lever, Evan
Lovelady, Reid Webster, Jessie Russell, Dalton
Chapman, Austin Fulmer, Forrest White, Corey
Bedenbaugh, Sam Johnson, Zack Waites, Cade Hamm,
Hogan Sanders, Kenny Nicholson, Ashley Livingston,

Congratulations to Alix Green and

This program recognizes students for not
only their athletic achievements, but also
their achievements in the classroom and
in their communities. We are very proud
of Alix and Chris!
Congratulations to
