Mid-Week Informer JANUARY 25, 2017 From Your Pastor Complacency in Your Marriage? When I get home in the evenings I like to take off my dress clothes and put on my comfortable pants and maybe some slippers. Most of us like to be comfortable. Some- times we get comfortable and complacent in our relationships (especially our marriages). In Pre-Marital Counseling we talk about things such as roles and responsibilities of the husband and wife, communicating, resolving conflict, finances and budgeting, parenting and spiritual growth. We want people to be prepared for marriage with the realization that a good marriage takes a lot of work. After looking at Marital Faithfulness in Malachi 2 this past Sunday, I have been trying to examine my own marriage. I think my greatest struggle is in the area of communica- tions. I am an introvert and I have to push myself to talk. If Jenny and I are sitting in the living room watching TV, reading a book, or doing something else, I feel like every- thing is good because we are together. But Jenny likes to communicate. She likes to know what is going on in my life, at church, and she likes to share what is going on in her life. Over the years I have gotten slightly better at listening but still have a lot of shortcomings in the area of communicating. I decided to go back and look at the section called “Communicating within Marriage” in my Pre-Marital Counsel- ing. I realized I needed a review. There are lots of Scrip- tures that deal with how we communicate with one another. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that we have the power of death and life in our tongues. We can use our tongues to tear down or build up. Ephesians 4:15 reminds us to “speak the truth in love.” James 1:19 tells us to be “quick to listen.” Colossians 4:6 says to “let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.” Needless to say, I’ve got some work to do. Are there areas in your marriage or relationships that could use a little work? As we journey through Malachi, now might be a good time for some evaluation! Bro. From Your Pastor Complacency in Your Marriage?

When I get home in the evenings I like to take off my dress clothes and put on my comfortable pants and maybe some slippers. Most of us like to be comfortable. Some-times we get comfortable and complacent in our relationships (especially our marriages). I think my greatest struggle is in the area of communica-tions. I am an introvert and I have to push myself to talk. If Jenny and I are sitting in the living room watching TV, reading a book, or doing something else, I feel like every-thing is good because we are together. But Jenny likes to communicate. She likes to know what is going on in my life, at church, and she likes to share what is going on in her life. Over the years I have gotten slightly better at listening but still have a lot of shortcomings in the area of communicating. I decided to go back and look at the section called “Communicating within Marriage” in my Pre-Marital Counsel-ing. I realized I needed a review.
