December 2014

It’s official: the holiday season is here…. I know because the MOR Holiday Party is over. What a festive affair!! The setting was beautiful and the food was wonderful. Thank you, Patrice Hennessy, Shelia Henderson, and Lisa and Gerhard Hillmann for putting on a terrific club holiday party. That event marks the end of our organized club events for 2014, so now we can reflect on the past year. WOW! There are a lot of moving parts to this club. We had a very busy year of club activities, and it was a blast to participate in so many of them. There are so many great people within the club and I enjoy meeting and working with all of you.

Our Activities Director, Gerhard Hillmann, has started identifying locations and scheduling activities for next year. First on the calendar will be the ever-popular Pistol Packing Porschephiles at Blackwing Shooting Center in January. Jeff Brubaker will schedule several Trickle Charge Saturdays in the winter months to psyche up members for getting their cars ready to drive when the weather turns to spring. The driving season will continue to feature monthly Drive and Dine excursions and Third Thursday social gatherings. Speaking of Third Thursdays, our plan is to have more of these gatherings at residential locations with great parking and great food from the various food trucks that

populate Columbus. It is so hip to have a food truck at an event these days!! In July, please plan to attend P2O™, the casual car show, in Granville. Bill Slone is the new Chairman of the event, and he is looking for members to help plan and volunteer at the event. It has been the primary source of funding for the Club’s charitable contributions to the community the past few years. You can spend a full day in Granville volunteering and showing your car. It’s a day that is rich in visual candy, with an array of Porsches displayed along the streets. The day is full of fun as you mingle with all of the interesting people who bring these beautiful cars! Please contact Bill at [email protected] to volunteer to be part of this big club event. The Driving Events Committee, led by Frank Todaro and Chip Henderson, is working hard to plan an eventful program for next year. They are working to finalize dates for our Mid Ohio events in 2015. As of today, it looks like we’ll host a DE in April and a CR and DE in September. There is another DE planned for August at a track that has never hosted a PCA Club DE event. Kevin Hennessy has been working tirelessly on getting an event at this world-famous venue that is only a few hours from our Region. Our Club has the opportunity to shine on the national PCA scene with this DE event. Stay tuned for more details, and hold August 21 through 23 for what could be the signal event of our Club year! I hope that you and your loved ones made some life-long memories together at the holidays. Now, onto 2015…it will be known as the best year yet for MORPCA.

The Apex

It is that time of year when we pause for a few minutes and take a quick look at the track season behind us before moving on to next year. It is a lot of fun to talk about all the good times we had on and off the track over a few adult beverages, but this is also an important part of the planning process for next season. We want to provide the best possible Porsche track experience we can and there are always things we can do better. Overall, 2014 was a very good year for the MOR DE and Club Race Program. Our April DE was almost a sell-out, as was our September Club Race/Advanced DE. The October DE at Putnam Park was also very well attended. Plus Mother Nature smiled upon us pretty much all year, so this made time on the track considerably more enjoyable. Of course, none of this would have happened without a whole lot of hard work by a bunch of people, especially our DE Event Chairs - Mike Stoner, Bob Curley, Gehard Hillman and for Club Race, Dave Hayden. And there is a long list of people including Shannon Moore, Jeff West, Marsha Hayden, Jim Ryback, Jake Kent, Frank Todaro, Doug Harris, Virginia Huffman, Ron Thomas and many, many others who stepped up and gave freely of their time and energies to help make these events happen. The Mid Ohio Region is known for hosting well managed, safe and extremely organized events, and 2014 was no exception. So I personally want to thank all of you who contributed to our success. We could not do this without each and every one of you! I also need to send a shout out to Mike Teply, Dave Wenger and the rest of the Autocross team for re-vitalizing the program and putting on several fun and entertaining events in 2014. These guys not only plan and manage the events, they also do almost all of the work involved in the set-up and tear down. Great Job guys! The autocross competition may not be as cool and sexy as a DE, but for the price, it is hard to find something more fun to do on a Sunday afternoon. And as I have always said, there is no better way to teach a new driver car control skills than a day on the autocross course. Look for some new and challenging venues in 2015! So on to next year - we have some big things planned! Once again we will be heading back to the world famous Mid Ohio Sports Car Course for a DE in April. This year however, we will be hosting a PCA-sponsored Driving Instructor training course in conjunction with the track weekend. With the help of Instructors from the national PCA DE Program, we will conduct classroom and on-track training on the Friday prior to the Saturday and Sunday DE. This training is for new and experienced Instructors alike and is world-class. I went through the training myself at Summit Point last year with the Potomac Region and found it to be very informative and a great way to brush-up on my instructing skills. If you can’t make it to this event, we will be heading back to Mid

Ohio again in September for a Club Race and Advanced DE weekend. This is always a popular event and if you are not a Club Racer or an Advanced DE driver, come on up anyway. Admission is free to members and you are guaranteed to see some great Porsche racing. Plus, we are always in need of volunteers, so come out and be a part of the action! And for the really big event (and very poorly kept secret) - for the first time ever by ANY car club, the MOR will be hosting a DE weekend at the historic (and totally awesome) Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That’s right - we are going to Indy Baby!  Your Treasurer, Kevin Hennessey has been quietly working this deal since early this year - culminating in a trip by Kevin and several others on the Driving Committee to the Speedway in October to finalize the details. The plan is to spend three days on the Indy Formula 1 course (sorry, no hot laps on the oval), with full use of the garage and paddock area. Is that cool or what?!! I don’t know about you, but ever since I was a little kid watching the Indy 500 on our black and white TV, one day driving a car across that yard of bricks has been very high on my bucket list. There are still a lot of details to work out, but look for more information on how and when to register for this historic event through email and in the DOS. And be sure to thank Kevin the next time you see him for all of his hard work to make this happen. Great job Kevin! There are also some rumors going around that we may be working a road rally or two into the mix in 2015. I’ve never competed in a rally event, but I’ve heard they are a lot of fun. And I believe it involves driving a Porsche on twisty back roads - so count me in! So there it is, another great year of Porsche motorsports behind us and a very exciting year ahead. If you’ve been thinking about getting your P-car out on the track or autocross course, your excuses are no longer valid. So get that car tuned-up and ready to rock. We are going to have some fun in 2015! I will see you at the track, autocross and rally! Chip

MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting Minutes

MORPCA Monthly Board Meeting MinutesOctober 13, 2014Submitted by Betsy MacDonell, former Secretary

Meeting called to order by Chip Henderson, Vice Presi-dent – 6:33pm

Members Present: Betsy MacDonell, Kevin Hennessy, Virginia Huffman, Todd Baumann, Ron Thomas, Chip Henderson, Mike Stoner, Ron Carr, Dave Hayden, Mar-sha Hayden, John Peecook, Frank Todaro, Bob Curley, Lorraine Curley, Kevin Hennessy, Patrice Hennessy and Jose Isern.

The minutes of the September 8th meeting were distrib-uted by email after the meeting and were approved via email.

President’s Report/ Correspondence by Betsy Mac-DonellBetsy will distribute the minutes after the meeting for approval.

Treasurer’s Report by Kevin HennessyKevin sent a document ahead of the meeting that showed the finances are in good shape.

Standing Committee Reports:

Advertising by Karen EnglandNo Report

Website by Todd BaumannTodd requests content in the form of photos, stories or planning ideas to make the website more current. Doug Harris is a wonderful source for event photos.

Newsletter by Virginia HuffmanA “Call for Candidates” notice was put into the Septem-ber DOS, which is presently at the printers.

Social Activities by Gerhard HillmannNo Report

Concours/P2O by Ron Thomas and Bill SloneThere appears to be a misunderstanding with the Gran-ville Chamber of Commerce and MOR regarding pay-ment for volunteer efforts. Ron did not agree to pay the Chamber in 2014 and they expected payment because they received one in 2013.

Driving Events by Chip Henderson and Frank Todaro Dave Hayden reported the registration numbers for Club Race were less than expected with 20 cancellations coming in within the last 10 days. Dave stressed that a consistent date would help the program and it has to be at least 2 weeks away from a big event i.e. Road America or Watkins Glen. Frank is working with Mid-Ohio on dates for 2015. Bob Curley circulated a handout that showed how the DE numbers worked. With 65 paid registrants and 13 unpaid registrants for a total of 78 at $350 each for a total of $22,750. Expenses included pro instruction and extra track time for a total of $2,300. The net income for DE was $20,450. Unfortunately, the expenses of running the Mid-Ohio Club Race consumed all of the DE net income plus 5K.

Mike Stoner reported that registration for Putnam DE is at 102 drivers with 33 instructors. The weather forecasts for the weekend of October 18-19 looks favorable for drivers that are weather watchers and register late.

The most recent A/X went well with 15 diehard enthusiasts at Columbus Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 20th.

An accounting error appears to be the cause behind the cost sharing prob-lems with NOR with the Nelson’s Ledges event in 2013. NOR overpaid MOR, the error was an honest mistake and the money should be returned. A motion was proposed by Betsy and seconded by Todd to reimburse NOR for overpayment not to exceed $2000. The motion passed.

Track deposits for 2015 events were discussed and approved.

Technical by Jeff BrubakerNo Report

Philanthropy by Mike StonerNo Report

Membership by Trina AllisonBetsy reported that there are 559 active and 370 supplemental for a total of 929 members.

New Business/Roundtable DiscussionRon Carr has visited the site for the 2015 Porsche Parade as part of the planning committee. French Lick, Indiana is the site and it has two large historic hotels and a casino. Ron encourages everyone to attend since it is so close, about 4 hours away.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm.
