FEA Application : Evaluate the stress distribution through the structure as the counterweight is slowly being increased to a point where the existing luffing hydraulics can accommodate the out of balance portion of the boom and operational payload. Highly stresses areas will have to be modified/changed. Different structural solutions can now be evaluated to ensure structural integrity during operations. Once the needed modifications have been decided on, a full costing can now be done by accounting for the relevant work at the structural places where it is needed. The savings of salvaging older equipment, the gains from the increase in through-put versus the cost of the modifications can now be properly assessed before any down-time is incurred or capex is risked.
