The Feudal System The Feudal System was a way of

government based on obligations between the king, lord, and peasants. In the Feudal System the society was divided in 2 classes which were upper and lower. The upper class consisted of kings and lords, and the lower class was made up of the peasants. The king gave large manors or fiefs to his favorite lords. The fiefs included houses, barns, and animals. In return the lord promised to give the king what ever he asked for. The king could ask for money or soldiers. The lower class made of the peasants or serfs spent most of their time working for the lord. Some of the jobs done by serfs included farming, cutting wood for fireplaces, and repairing buildings. In return oforthe peasants’ work, the lords gave them security from barbarians from other lands. In the Feudal System the upper class maintained tight control over the lower class. The life of the lower class was very hard, and they sacrificed their freedom in return for security.
