MIDDLE GORGE STATION PRECINCT Middle Gorge Station Precinct The Victorian Government is building three state-of-the-art stations as part of the Mernda Rail Extension Project. Using the relaxed feel of a homestead verandah as its inspiration, the design places the station building into a lively public forecourt that will directly connect with the school and surrounding homes. ParkingThe station parking includes:

• 550 park-and-ride spaces

• 11 accessible spaces.

Sustainable building materialsThe station’s rock walls will use stone excavated from the project area. Native trees will be used for landscaping, creating a range of spaces to enjoy.

Arriving at the stationThe station’s entry and drop-off points will be made clear by distinct peaks and folds in the roofline. These points will be lit at night to create a visible landmark.

The station’s ramps, lifts and stairs will provide easy access and a path will connect new public forecourts on both sides of the station via a wide pedestrian underpass.

The station has been designed to be comfortably accessed by everyone – including the elderly, people travelling with children and people with disability.

Drop-offAccess is available via both Old Plenty Road and Williamsons Road for taxi and kiss-and-ride drop-off facilities, which will be visible from waiting areas.

Public spaceLinking with the school crossing, a large public space will offer a safe meeting area while reducing the need for pedestrians and vehicles to mix.

Station forecourtDistinctive paving at the forecourt will highlight the station entrance, and larger native trees will provide shade for seated areas.

Bicycle storageA separate bike storage area will be built in the public forecourt using recycled timber, with easy access to the path and the station.

PlatformsSimple but elegant roof structures will span most of the platforms, offering protection from the weather.

SafetyA gradual rise from the street-level footpath will make entering the station easier, with clear views to the entrance. Walls will be designed and placed to maximise visibility from the ramps, lifts and stairs and public space.

Carefully placed lighting and CCTV will help maintain safety, as will the presence of Protective Services Officers.
