Middle School Mathematics

INFORMATION SHEET SKILLS AND UNDERSTANDINGS: The ISM Middle School Mathematics curriculum aims to ensure students develop a growing awareness of the complexity of mathematics, and its use in every day problem solving. With supervision, students will be able to apply their understanding to increasingly complex problems, choosing the most appropriate process and communicating their ideas effectively. Knowing and Understanding are fundamental to studying mathematics and form the base from which to explore concepts and develop skills. Students will learn to

• select appropriate mathematics when solving problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations

• apply the selected mathematics successfully when solving problems • solve problems correctly in a variety of contexts.

Recognising and Working with patterns allows students to generalise and explore, making predications based on their understanding of the connection between number. Student swill learn to

• select and apply mathematical problem-solving techniques to discover complex patterns • describe patterns as general rules consistent with findings • prove, or verify and justify, general rules.

Communicating Mathematics provides a powerful and universal language where students use appropriate representation to transfer ideas. Students will learn to

• use appropriate mathematical language (notation, symbols and terminology) in both oral and written explanations

• use appropriate forms of mathematical representation to present information • move between different forms of mathematical representation • communicate complete, coherent and concise mathematical lines of reasoning v. organize

information using a logical structure. Applying Mathematics in real-life problems is an essential skill, and we encourage students to see mathematics as a tool for solving problems and exploring the world around them. Students will learn to

• select appropriate mathematical strategies when solving authentic real-life situations • apply the selected mathematical strategies successfully to reach a solution • justify the degree of accuracy of a solution • justify whether a solution makes sense in the context of the authentic real-life situation.

CONTENT: (Yearly overviews, offering detailed curriculum outlines are available on the ISM Website) RESOURCES:

• Mathematics Frame working ( Collins): Series 1-3, with ebook access • Myimaths Online Mathematics tool, 10ticks Resources • (Year 9) Graphing Calculator

ASSESSMENT:

• Students will be given opportunities to consolidate understanding in class and at home, though regular homework. This will be reviewed in class.

• Throughout Years 7-9, students will be asked to work on real life scenarios/investigations and mathematical explorations.

• Students undertake both formative and summative assessments • Understanding of topics is determined through End of Unit Assessments • Students will take an end of year exam

It will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health, fitness and overall well-being. Students will be taught to:

• Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual sports

• Develop their technique and improve their performance in a range of sports • Analyse their own and others’ performances, compare to previous performances and

demonstrate improvement • Develop their confidence to get involved and challenge themselves in different sports

and physical activities. • Understand and apply the health benefits of physical activity

CONTENT: Students will be taught the skills and understandings listed above through a broad and balanced range of physical activities. Over the academic year Middle School students will cover five different activity areas: Athletics (e.g. track & field and rowing); Gymnastics/trampolining; Invasion Games (e.g. football and handball); Striking and fielding games (e.g. Rounders); Net/wall games (e.g. badminton and volleyball) ASSESSMENT: A ‘baseline’ assessment occurs at the beginning of each new activity cycle, on-going assessment for learning occurs throughout the cycle and a final summative assessment occurs at the end of each activity cycle. The criteria against which students are assessed in each activity area are: Skill execution; Making and applying decisions; Evaluating and Improving; Physical and mental capacity; Knowledge and Understanding of Healthy active Lifestyle.
