Middle Schools Chevron Reports

Purpose of the Middle Schools Chevron Reports The purpose of the Middle Schools Chevron Reports is to support the three-year Middle School redesign strategic plan. These reports have been created to provide key performance indicators and trend data for monitoring, measuring, and increasing academic performance. A brief summary of the information provided within the Middle Schools Chevron Reports is provided below.

For each district middle school, Academic Affairs School Governance staff identified a goal that is focused on improving the school’s overall College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) score. Specific objectives designed to support achievement of the overall Goal are also provided.

The Quantitative Data section provides data with a direct relationship to the Goals/Objectives, including information on students’ performance in the areas of literacy and numeracy as measured by the district’s benchmark assessments in reading and math; students’ course performance as measured by teacher-assigned grades; and the school accountability data reported under Georgia’s Single Statewide Accountability System. The Reading on Gr Level and Numeracy on Gr Level tables provide the percentage of students meeting grade-level performance targets for reading and math as measured by the BOY (fall), MOY (winter), and EOY (spring) administrations of the benchmark assessments. Two different numbers are reported for BOY and MOY; the first represents the percentage of students who are On Target for the assessment window, and the second represents the percentage of students who have met the end-of-grade-level performance target established by the district. The assessment tools used for grades 6-8 are the SRI Reading Assessment and NWEA MAP. The Teacher Assigned Grades table includes disaggregation by content area and grade level, with results displayed by quarters. The percentage of grades earned by numeric band and an overall pass rate are provided. The final two tables in this section of the report provide the school’s accountability outcomes, including a 3-year history of College & Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) scores, along with the school’s current Priority, Focus, Alert, or Reward status.

The Financial Data section includes information on the school’s budget allocation by source and category for fiscal year 2015. Enrollment and demographic data, including the percentage of Economically Disadvantaged (ED), English Learner (EL) and Students with Disabilities (SWD) are also provided. The 10th day enrollment count is used in conjunction with the funding source data to calculate the total allocation per student and the general fund allocation per student.

The Qualitative Data section of the report includes relevant school-specific information provided by the principal. This typically includes general background information, specific areas of instructional focus, and strategies implemented to support the Goals / Objectives.

The Additional Data section includes information with a more indirect relationship to the specified Goal. This data may help tell “the story behind the numbers” and/or identify factors that may contribute to the school’s academic outcomes. The table at the top left of this section includes information on the percentage of students by days absent; the school’s total number of discipline referrals and percentage of students (unduplicated) who were referred for out-of-school suspension (OSS), in-school suspension (ISS), or an alternative placement; the student mobility rate, which measures the percentage of students enrolling and withdrawing; the percentage of students assigned to Tier 2 or Tier 3 level Response to Intervention (RTI); and the teacher attendance rate. Each of these data points are reported quarterly; however, the absence data will be reported as the cumulative total across quarters in order to track absolute attendance status relative to CCRPI criteria. The Student Retention table provides the percentage of students overall and by each grade level who were marked retained in the end of year Student Record data collection. The TAPS Score Distribution table reports the SY 2013-14 distribution of ratings on the Teacher Assessment of Performance Standards portion of the teacher evaluation system, which only includes evaluator ratings based on observations and walkthroughs. The Teacher/Administrator Experience table provides information on the number of years of teacher and administrator experience, both overall and within the Impact school building.

The Principal’s Corner provides the building administrator with an opportunity to provide commentary and additional insight into the school’s report. This section includes Points of Pride, which gives the principal an opportunity to highlight the positive items occurring at the school.

Goal: To improve student achievement and growth as measured by the annual College and Career Ready Performance Index, which shall increase by 3% of the gap from the prior year’s score and 100. Objectives:

The percent of 6th grade students scoring in the proficient ranges for reading on the SRI assessment will increase by 3 percentage points from 84% to 90%.

The percent of 7th grade students scoring in the proficient ranges for reading on the SRI assessment will increase by 2 percentage points from 90% to 92%.

Coastal Middle School, World IB School, has fifty-five certified teachers working collaboratively to offer the rigorous and holistic IB Middle Years Programme to all students. Students are afforded the opportunity to take high school courses in World Languages, Mathematics, and Literature to ensure all students exceed all expectations. The IB Middle Years Programme allows staff to address holistically the intellectual,

social, emotional and physical well-being of all students. Opportunities are afforded to all students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to manage complexity and take responsible action for the betterment of our global society. The MYP programme ensures breadth and depth of understanding through study in eight subject groups. Students are required to study at least two languages (language of

instruction and an additional language of choice) to support understanding of their own culture and the cultures of others. The approach empowers students to actively lead community service projects in order to make their world a better place. The instruction students receive prepares them for further education, and the workplace

The goal at Coastal Middle School is that all students all exceed standards. Over the last seven years, students who exceeded standards increased in reading 34%, math 25%, science 18%, and social studies 26%.

A Costal Middle School teacher is recognized as the 2014-2015 SCCPSS SCEME Teacher. Students are exposed to a multitude of STEM activities to include Lego Robotics, Technological Systems, 2-D Game Creation using MIT’s Scratch program, 3-D Game Creation using Kodu

Game Lab, Mousetrap Car Design, Dragster Design, Engineering, Biotechnological, Website Design, and Junior Achievement Courses. IB students lead a community service project where their knowledge is put into action as they work to improve their world and community.

These activities include clothing drives, book drives, toy drives, and food drives, Trick or Treat for Troops, Holiday Angels, collaboration projects with the Second Harvest Food Bank, and constructing fresh water wells around the world.

Students at Coastal Middle School excel academically in classroom, athletically on the court and field, and artistically on the stage. A band

student from the school competed successfully in the state All State Band Competition. Athletes routinely excel in district championship

competitions. Dozens of Coastal Middle students are accepted each year into the Duke TIP program.

Teacher and staff at Coastal Middle School strive to foster exceptional communication with parents and the community. The school is working

to further improve this area of the State Health School Climate Survey. Parent and student-friendly team websites are established and are

among the most frequented websites in our district. Systems have been developed to facilitate two-way communication between the school

and community, an area selected as a goal based on parent feedback on the 2013-2014 GA DOE STAR climate survey. Parents are

regularly asked to provide feedback and suggestions for improving school operations.

In addition to the IB instruction, students are afforded various opportunities for acceleration, remediation, and enrichment. Students who are overage may be recommended for an overage acceleration program in which they may earn high school credit simultaneously while completing middle grade courses in order to reduce the risk for dropping out of school. Tutorial and additional support is provided through

before school, after school, lunch, and connection programs, as well as made available to students working from home.

Principal's Story Behind the Numbers

Due to changes in testing protocol we anticipate improved performance in both MAP and CCRPI data. All students will take the spring administration of the MAP test. We have reviewed course numbers to ensure appropriate alignment between course and grade requirements. Staff attendance dropped 2nd quarter due to extended illnesses that were unavoidable. Our staff has initiated an improvement process to create positive relationships with students in our feeder schools to avoid losing high performing students to specialty schools in the future.

DeRenne Middle School an established neighborhood school is centrally located within Chatham County. The vision for

DeRenne is professional excellence for our staff; academic excellence and personal excellence for our students which leads to

all students and staff achieving excellence every day and in every way. Our expectation is that we will provide the best

education for our students every day. We have set expectations for our students for the highest personal achievement and

academic achievement. Our educational focus is: high quality teaching that is based on the Common Core Georgia

Performance Standards; effective teaching taught by the highest quality education professionals. We believe all of our

students are achievers, with the curriculum practices that we have in place our students will continue to achieve and excel.

Important components of our curriculum are our CTAE programs which include Technology Engineering, Business and

Computer Science, and our Specialty program, Medical and Allied Health. Our specialty program is important because health

services is one of the largest industries in the country with more than 11 million jobs and is growing steadily. Our students

compete annually in Student Success Expo and annually receive awards for competition. Our students are afforded project-

based learning opportunities and access to career guidance and academic counseling to help them understand the educational

requirements for high-growth, in-demand career fields.

Our school community is committed to excellence which is evident by our continuous progress as evident by the following

accomplishments.

2014 Perception Survey indicates an increase of 14% in area of academic achievement from 80% in 2013 to 94% in 2014

2014 Perception Survey indicates an increase of 24% in the area of school safety from 64% in 2013 to 88% in 2014.

2014 Perception Survey indicates an increase of 12% in the area of community engagement from 755 in 2013 to 87% in 2014.

2014 Discipline Data indicates a decrease of 30% in the number of OSS/ISS incidents.

CCRPI Data indicates an increase of 8.7 points over a 3 year period from 48.7 in 2012 to 57.4 in 2014. Because of the efforts of our staff, our students achieved the following during the 2014 school year. Principal's Story Behind the Numbers

Our primary focus continues to be on student achievement. Our school wide researched based instructional strategies include reading and writing in all content areas, evidence based writing, problem-based learning strategies and effective math strategies. Our 21st Century Community Learning Center program is well attended and has met all goals for two consecutive years. Our CCRPI report indicates a decrease in the achievement gap and we anticipate we will close the achievement gap further thus increasing student achievement of all of students and more specifically our students with disabilities.

Hubert middle School has been an integral part of the East Savannah community for over fifty years. The school has housed the Multi-Intelligence Magnet program and is currently the only middle school with two academies: The Hubert Career Academy and the Paragon Male Academy. The Career Academy offers students an introduction to aviation, engineering and culinary arts. The Paragon Male Academy houses 100 male students who receive extended learning time, participate in service learning projects and leadership activities. Hubert has fully implemented a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) program which focuses on positive behavior. The program has aided Hubert in making the 30% discipline reduction to align with the District’s Disproportionality project. Hubert currently houses 526 students with 98% free and reduced lunch which qualifies Hubert to be a school wide Title 1 program. Title 1 funding has helped to reduce class sizes which have played a major role in the academic success of the school. Hubert has been a Title 1 Reward school for three consecutive years. The Title 1 status is awarded to schools that are making gains in reducing the achievement gap among its students.

Mercer Middle School will Rename, Rebrand, Reinvent, and Rejuvenate itself in the next two years by embracing the focus of: Maritime Logistics and International Trade

Specific areas of focus will include the following topics: Import/Export trade, Commerce Management, Foreign Trade Politics, Custom Regulations, Ships and Shipping, Transportation/Distribution, Global Supply Chain Management, Warehouse and Distribution Center Management.

Instructional focus at Mercer Middle School will transition from a 85% whole group instruction to 70% whole group instruction. Specifically, Mercer Middle School students will experience differentiated instruction 25% of the instructional time as calculated through classroom observation walkthroughs by the administration, coaches and outside observers.

Principal's Story Behind the Numbers (updated 3-11-15)

To improve student achievement, Mercer Middle School will implement a redesign to focus on: Instructional coaches for core content areas, Dean of Students, Parent-Community Liaison, filling all teaching position with adults who are fully dedicated to the needs of our students, and reinstating a foreign language teacher. Due to increased rigor from changes in state testing, Mercer Middle School anticipates improved performance on MAP, SRI, and CCRPI data. The climate has changed tremendously for the better at Mercer Middle School. The administration and staff have worked collectively to promote positive behaviors with our students on a consistent basis. Parents and community members now feel welcome when they come to the school and now highly recommend prospective students to attend Mercer Middle School.

Myers Middle School (MMS) was constructed in 1960 as a junior high school housing grades seven, eight, and

nine. In 1985, the school system implemented the middle school concept, and Myers Middle School began to

serve grades six, seven, and eight. In August of 2001, a new facility was constructed as Myers Middle School.

The new facility provides students advanced technological opportunities.

Myers current serves 640 students. Approximately 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The faculty

and staff are comprised of 45 certified educators and 20 classified staff members. Thirty-one percent (31%) of the

teachers hold Bachelor degrees. Fifty-two (52%) of the certified teachers hold a Master’s degree. Fifteen percent

(15%) of the certified faculty hold a Specialist or Doctorate degree.

Currently, MMS is working to close achievement gaps in all core content areas. Working toward this goal, Myers

will participate in the Middle School Redesign. In the redesign plan we will implement the Micro Society theme.

The Micro Society nurtures higher order thinking skills, by making learning relevant and reflective of "real world"

experience.

The Micro Society University will utilize the principles of Core Knowledge to empower students to take ownership

of their learning by confronting questions of ethics, values and decision-making through: Applied Literacy and

Numeracy Skills, Government and Politics, Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship and DECA Model and Marketing.

As we are implementing school wide instructional strategies and resources (i.e. Thinking Maps,

Compass Learning, Close Reading, Constructed Responses, PBIS, and DBQ's) and purchasing

additional multimedia resources, we anticipate closing achievement gaps between subgroups and

increasing student achievement in all content areas.

Southwest Middle School proudly embraces the holistic spirit of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization’s philosophy. Utilizing different modalities that meet the individual learning styles of all students, teachers present a rigorous curriculum in all content areas. The faculty and staff set high standards for themselves and share the same regarding their expectations of the students, by teaching students to analyze and reach thoughtful conclusions. Students are encouraged to think independent and drive their own learning. All students benefit from an increased cultural awareness through the development of a second language. In short, students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics while learning to engage with others in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world. The faculty at Southwest Middle School understand the value of ensuring that technology is available to students. As a result, several staff members have submitted proposals for technology grants to increase available technology for our students. The academic coach was awarded a $2,500.00 PKD International Research Grant toward technology for online literacy initiatives. The media specialist was awarded 5 iPads in response to a district mini-grant for instructional technology. Four classroom teachers were awarded a total of 18 iPads and 4 Chromebooks in response to their district mini-grant proposals for instructional technology. The students at Southwest Middle School boast well-rounded talents, from academics to athletics. Students have received recognition for accomplishing the title of district champions in both girls and boys basketball. The volleyball team achieved 2nd place status in the district-wide competition. Each year, several students from Southwest Middle School are selected for District Honor Band. Several students are recognized annually in art contests, with one of our students selected as Best All Around in a local New Beginning Art Exhibit sponsored by the Savannah Chapter of Links, Inc. Two 6th grade students were recognized district-wide in essay contests, where one student placed first among all 6th grade students in the district and the other student placed 2nd among all middle school students in the district. The students and faculty members at Southwest Middle are able to accomplish the aforementioned achievements by working as a team. The faculty prides itself on professional development that takes place on a weekly basis. The overarching goal of all professional development is to improve student achievement. The most recent achievements demonstrate the value of such work, as Southwest Middle School has been recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as a Title One High-Progress Reward School. The collaboration between the school and the community is evident in the recognition our Parent Teacher Student Association as a Model PTA for the past two years

Principal's Story Behind the Numbers

Southwest Middle School needs an IB Coordinator. In order to foster articulation from the middle school to high school International Baccalaureate programs, staff members from Southwest Middle School meet with Windsor Forest High School staff in vertical team meetings. These teams meet three times per year (during 1st semester, 2nd semester, and post-planning) for the purpose of analyzing curriculum and to discuss strengths and weaknesses in students' skills at all grade levels. The team establishes a plan to promote rigor and close skill gaps at each grade level to help ensure a seamless progression through the IB program.

The STEM Academy at Bartlett opened August 2013. It is a Specialty Program with Lottery-based enrollment of approximately 685 students. The criteria for admission into The STEM Academy for its inaugural year was CRCT scores of 815 in Reading and Math, CRCT score of 810 in science, 80 average in previous year’s core classes, and satisfactory conduct. Since there is not a defined attendance zone for The STEM Academy, we serve the entire Savannah-Chatham community and run approximately 27 buses each day. The vision and mission of the school district is strongly supported throughout our daily practices. Concurrently, The STEM Academy seeks to provide all students with a rigorous, relevant curriculum of academic study that will advance their knowledge in the areas of science, technology, and other branches of scholarship, empowering them to become college and career-ready and prepared to work in the twenty-first century. Currently, The STEM Academy is working diligently to obtain STEM Certification from GADOE and be recognized as Georgia’s first STEM Middle School. We are making continuous progress on that goal as evidenced by the following achievements:

• All 8th grade STEM Academy students are enrolled in high school level ELA, math & science courses. The school provides additional supports to assist students in meeting these expectations.

• Business, community, and post-secondary partnerships are involved in an on-going relationship with the STEM instructional program and are directly connected to in-class learning.

• Classroom instruction is predominantly student centered and students have the competence to think in complex ways and also apply the knowledge & skills they have acquired. When confronted with perplexing unknowns, students are able to create solutions & take action that further develops their skills & knowledge.

• The STEM Academy labs have wet lab capability and technology access. They are used by multiple teachers for collaboration, project work, virtual collaboration, and as an exhibition space.

• Technology use is ubiquitous throughout STEM Academy classrooms and includes a variety of technology tools that are integrated seamlessly into teaching and learning; the technology is consistently in the hands of students. Students are encourages to create different products based on their interests and strengths.

• The STEM Academy students meet/exceed state accountability scores in all STEM areas.

West Chatham Middle School (WCMS) is located in a rapidly growing western section of Chatham County. The school was built and opened in 1998 on a shared campus with West Chatham Elementary School. The school just completed its sixteenth year. Both residential and commercial construction in the immediate area is resulting in a significant increase in student enrollment.

The vision and mission of the school district and school is strongly supported throughout the school building. The school’s guiding principle is students first. Decisions made at WCMS can be directly connected to at least one of the school’s belief statements. Additionally, our school’s motto is “Excellence is our Standard and Mediocrity is Unacceptable.” All teachers and students are very familiar with this motto and the commitment to it is obvious. The faculty and staff are comprised of 91 employees (70 certified educators and 21 classified staff members). Thirty-five percent (35%) of our teachers hold Bachelor degrees. Forty-five percent (45%) of the certified teachers hold a master’s degree. Twenty

percent (20%) of the certificated faculty is at Ed.S or Doctoral level. Twenty teachers have earned the Gifted Endorsement on their professional certificate and fifteen are ESOL Endorsed. School improvement efforts are multi-faceted to encompass the diversity of students within the building. As a result of the aforementioned area construction, both the number of students and demographics continue to change, as they have over the last few years. Currently, WCMS is working to close the academic achievement gap between the following subgroups: English Language Learners, students with disabilities and multi-racial students. WCMS is making continuous progress as evidenced by the following

accomplishments:

The reading pass rate has averaged between 96 and 98 percent the last three years.

The math pass rate has increased by 17 points over the last three years.

There has been a 102 point gain on the SRI assessment over the last two years.

MAP math scores have increased four percent the last two years.

Discipline referral incidents have been reduced by 55% for regular education students and by 58% for students with disabilities over the last two years.

effective implementation of blended learning through Compass Learning, Thinking Map training, Document Based Questioning training, the purchase of Science Module kits, and the purchase of two additional Laptop media carts . Along with these efforts, we have implemented a strong Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS) program to strengthen a social culture of success that will lead to increased academic performance across all content areas.
