Pomona Grange Diner at The Great Geauga County Fair

The Pamona Grange (MP Photo/Colleen Lockhart)

The Geauga County Pomona Grange Diner is busy getting ready for the Fair. Volunteer members of Huntsburg

and Ledge Granges and their families and friends helped clean the equipment and building from top to bottom in preparation to serve thousands of great meals to hungry visitors to the Great Geauga County Fair in its 194th year. The Fair runs through Labor Day week-end, from Sept. 1 through 5.

The Diner, located next to the First-Aid Station and across from the milking parlor, serves roast beef and meatloaf dinners as well as hamburgers, hot dogs, and other sandwiches at lunch. Breakfast starts at 7 a.m. for the early birds with eggs, sausage and bacon, and real Geauga County maple syrup for pancakes. A variety of hot and cold beverages and desserts are offered all

day. If you like pie, cookies and fry pies, the Diner has them.

All of the money raised at the Diner will be used in the efforts of the Granges to help our communities. The Grange has been around since 1867, when the National Grange became the first nationwide farm organization with a motto of “American Values, Hometown Roots”.

Stop by the three Grange exhibit booths (Huntsburg, Hambden and Ledge) in the Agricultural Building at the south end of the fairgrounds. The displays show who the Grange is and how they serve the community during the year. Stop by the Pomona Diner for more information on the Granges in Geauga County and how you can join.

The Latest in Fair Food

barbecue sauce served in a big see-through cup. The first day it was offered, the concession actually ran out of pulled pork and they have since been serving it for over a decade to hungry fairgoers everywhere they go.

In Minnesota, fair attendees can enjoy a dessert salami - chocolate, butter, almonds and walnuts rolled into a salami shape and sliced. Other fun and unusual fare at the Minnesota State Fair include beer gelato, deep fried breakfast on a stick, a gluten-free beer battered bratwurst, schnitzel strips and jell-o salad ice cream.

The Kansas State Fair’s answer to a freezer pop is a pickle pop, briny frozen pickle juice that pairs well with the region’s famous barbecue. At North Carolina’s annual state fair, you can find a variation of this known as Koolickles, pickles soaked in the sugary kids’ beverage, Kool Aid.

Massachusetts doesn’t force you to decide between funnel cakes and candy. They dip jelly beans in batter and deep fry them, while the Wisconsin State Fair will give you an Elvis on a Stick, a deep fried banana battered peanut butter cup with bacon.

You don’t have far to go to get chocolate covered bacon on a stick. Also known as a muddy pig, these treats can be found at The Ohio State Fair. They are available at other fairs as well, but Ohio’s are distinct as they are also gilded with candied cherries.

The Minnesota State Fair (a.k.a. The Great Minnesota Get-Together) serves everything from candy apples to camel meat on a stick. To transform an iconic Italian dish into a portable novelty, spaghetti is mixed into a meatball, which is then cooked, battered, fried, skewered and rolled in marinara sauce.

The only things that seems not to have been invented yet are tasty things to soothe the poor stomachs holding all this wacky food. Beer battered deep fried Tums, or perhaps a deep fried double Nexium cheeseburger wrapped in pretzel batter would be a good choice. How about Alka-Seltzer coated in cheese and fried on a stick or a nice Prilosec pop to help you cool off? Considering all the unusual dishes available, they would all undoubtedly be best sellers at American fairs.

By Christina Grand Porter

It’s fair season, time to expand your palate - or test your

gag reflex - at the concession stands. If it can be dipped in batter or put on a stick, someone is probably trying to sell it on

a fairground somewhere. Cotton candy, corn dogs and candy apples once ruled the midway at the local fair, but today’s fair visitors want food that’s a bit more exotic and the combinations seem to get more elaborate and outrageous every year. From health-defying treats like fried dough injected with Pepsi, to stomach-churning chocolate-dipped scorpions, the midway’s new jaw-dropping sideshow is the food.

The Iowa State Fair boasts “60 delectable items available on-a-stick,” including the chocolate-covered chunky bacon maple nougat on-a-stick and the tater dog on-a-stick. Even alcohol can be fried when it’s packed in pretzel dough, like the fried beer that can be found at the Texas State Fair.

At the California State Fair you can dine on a python kebab - snake meat seasoned with Worchester sauce, liquid smoke, Old Bay Seasoning and lemon pepper. It’s reputed to taste like chicken but is a far more adventurous choice than fowl. This fair is also the place to get a cheeseburger stuffed with macaroni and cheese and served on a bun composed of two Krispy Kreme donuts. An equally crazy burger is a milk shake burger at the Florida State Fair - a salty-sweet hybrid of a cheeseburger topped with a deep fried ice cream. Then there’s the doughnut burger at the Alabama State Fair which features a quarter-pound hamburger, bacon, cheese and two glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts in place of a single bun. The monstrosity contains nearly 1,100 calories and 67 grams of fat.

At the Indiana State Fair you can find a savory twist on a hot fudge sundae - a hot beef sundae layered with mashed potatoes, marinated beef, gravy, cheese, corn sprinkles and topped with a cherry tomato. This was thought to be inspired in Miami by the Dade County Fair & Expo’s Pork Parfait, an ice-cream-sundae style concoction of pulled pork, mashed potatoes, and

The Many Things I do in 4-HBy Jessica Burden

Hi, my name is Jessica Burden, and this is my fourth year in 4-H with the Feathers and Fleece 4-H Club. I have

been my club’s news officer for two years and I am responsible for writing a small article on what we did at each 4-H meeting and submitting it. This is also my first year being on the Geauga County Fashion Board where I’m the secretary and first time on J u n i o r F a i r Board.

A little bit about myself is that I am homeschooled and this will be my sophomore year in high school. I am the oldest girl of six and I enjoy many things such as snowboarding, volleyball, debate, horses, and playing with my siblings. I also really enjoy computers and am considering a career in computer programming or graphic arts. This year I have started working on my congressional award as well. I made two sewing projects, a long purple skirt with a pink top, and I did a project where you try to find an outfit as cheap as possible. I found my western show outfit for 75 percent off the original price and saved $152! Both of these projects w e r e S t a t e q u a l i f i e r s . T h i s y e a r in 4-H I am doing market turkey, market duck, market sheep, fancy chickens, pet r a b b i t a n d sewing.

This is my first year doing market duck and it is now one of my favorite projects. Ducks are so cute and fluffy. Our biggest problem with them was that they love to splash all of their water out of their water bowl so we were constantly refilling it and cleaning out their brooder until I built a swim-proof waterer. Our seven ducks are free-ranged with access to fresh water for drinking and separate water for swimming. They are raised on mostly non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) feed because it is what our family prefers.

This will be my fourth year doing market turkeys. I really enjoy watching them fluff up and strut around the yard. Our turkeys are free-ranged as well and have mostly non-GMO feed and fresh water available at all times. This year we were

really careful with the turkeys and made sure they had a predator-proof pen at night. We learned the hard way when we had six 2-month-old turkeys killed by a predator the year before last.

My lamb’s n a m e s a r e T i g g e r a n d P i g l e t . W e thought that our biggest problem in lambs would be making weight since they are cross breeds and the minimum weight went up this year. We were pretty s u r p r i s e d when we weighed them at the end of July and all of them made weight except for one, who

only missed by a few pounds. One of my lambs weighs 126 pounds which is the biggest one we’ve raised yet. Our lambs are also raised on mostly non-GMO grain, have access to their mom’s milk, a big pasture and fresh water at all times. I bring them down from the pasture twice a day to feed and

w o r k w i t h t h e m . T h i s y e a r w e’ v e made a big improvement in our parasite r e d u c t i o n by rotating b e t w e e n two large p a s t u r e s every three weeks.

This will be my first time taking any fancy (show) birds to fair. My little brother and I will be taking them in the rooster crowing and the chicken f l y i n g contests at fair. This is also my first

time doing a pet rabbit project. I bought a New Zealand buck as my pet and plan to use him as next year’s sire for my market rabbit project. I made a list of three goals I want to accomplish before I turn 18; I want to complete all eight market projects, qualify for showmanship sweepstakes, and win the clock trophy at State in sewing. I really appreciate everyone who helps with 4-H, especially the buyers and my mom. We couldn’t do it without you guys. Thank you. This year the auction will be held Saturday Sept. 3 at the Geauga County Fair Grounds. Small animal 2:30 p.m. in the auction tent, and large animals 5 p.m. in the large arena. If you have any questions, call 330-569-7430. Thank you so much for your support.

Tim Frank Septic at the FairBy Colleen Lockhart

Tim and Lori Frank started their business as a part-time mom and pop septic cleaning service, growing over the past 50 years. Today Tim Frank Septic Tank Cleaning Co. is a full service corporation with eight full-time and two part-time employees.

The third generation of Frank’s are continuing the family tradition of great service along with an educated and loyal workforce that has helped their business to expand.

While visiting the Great Geauga County Fair, stop at their big white tent which has been located on the West midway at Bainbridge Bend for over 10 years. Say hello to Tom and Carol Frank and the crew who are there to educate the public on septic systems and care. They have answers on the dos and don’ts of maintaining home septic systems and are available to answer any of your questions.

Stop by during the fair between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily for free give-a-ways and take advantage of their Fair Special on Pro-Pump SP bacteria for septic systems. Remember to congratulate them on their 50 years of success serving Geauga County and surrounding areas.

Celebrating 50 years are (l-r) Todd Frank, Tom Frank, president and Tim Frank retired.(MP Photo/Colleen Lockhart)

Geauga County Fair 4-HBy Devin Maze

Established in the year 1823, the Geauga County Fair has been a renowned icon for the community for almost two

centuries now; bringing forth hundreds, if not, thousands of people, neighbors and foreigners alike, onwards toward the full extent of our neighborhoods. As a result of being maintained by those who live among us in the region, the festival happens to be the very embodiment of what the county stands for today, a union between families. All of them working for the prosperity of the people, as well as the wellbeing of the livestock that makes up the entire Geauga County area, even beyond that in some cases. People who’ve been going to the fair all seem to have at least one thing in common that they all share. That is, they have been going to the fair for years. Not only have their fathers been going to this historic event, but their forefathers have been there as well, all in the name of tradition. The many generations that have been going there have played an important role in what makes the fair what it is today. A handful of the towns commoners chose to work in some of the many groups that seem to have the power to help govern the fair, just because they have the will to help out.

That shows just how incredibly significant the event is to so many people. It is the oldest fair in Ohio’s history, so it would be safe to say that this particular holiday plays an important role in the majority of peoples’ heritage as well. Most visitors claim to have developed some sort of kinship towards the individuals they end up meeting there. It is a relationship that sticks with them for the rest of their lives, even if they do only meet up for that one week out of the entire year.

One of the organizations that meet up every single year to help develop the

foundation of what the Geauga Fair is happens to be a group called 4-H. This group houses the people responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly during the week of the festivities. They tend to the many duties that involve getting the grounds ready for the fair to take place. That could include anything ranging from getting the animals ready for the shows that soon transpire, to getting the cows penned up for the day, so that they may be viewed by the judges. Furthermore, 4-H is also in charge of taking care of the community whenever the opportunity arises. Seeing them take care of more than just the fair is not something of a rarity. They can be spotted all over the county taking care of crops that need to be nurtured, or getting the funds needed to renovate a building or even a city block if they have to. This is just a mere scratch to the surface when it comes to them, as they are not too far behind when it comes to improving the community they reside in. On the surface, the fair may be just a park of amusement to certain people, but without the groups itself, many people would find themselves puzzled without the opportunities they would have gained just from working for the fair. People would lose the ability to find a good job, students wouldn’t have access to the scholarships they may earn from working to improve the fair, and most people who are together now may not even have met had it not been for the fair and the clubs that manage it. The same can be said for the people that tend to all the horses, cows and pigs in the area, all the arts and crafts that have to be looked at as well, and even the dirt track that is out there for the races.

There is much more to the fair than meets the eye. Every person who ends up going says they learn a thing or two about their community, and in turn, life. It doesn’t matter how long they’ve lived here or how much they thought they already knew. Why not grab a refreshing lemonade and take a look? There are people by the dozens who would love to see you there.
