Week 3, The Doctrine of Christ

Doctrine of Christ

• The Deity of Christ.

• The Humanity of Christ.

• The Offices of Christ.

• The Sufficiency of Christ.

The Deity of Christ.

Jesus is completely, fully God!

John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with

God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14, And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Creator.

Colossians 1:16

For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

John 1:3

All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Jesus as God appears in the Old Testament.

Deuteronomy 31:14-15

God appears to Moses.

And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. And the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud. And the pillar of cloud stood over the entrance of the tent.

Yet?

John 6:46

Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.

Jesus in the Old Testament

John 8:58

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

Exodus 3:13-14

Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to

you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me

to you.’”

Theophany

• “Temporal appearance of God in visible, particularly before the incarnation. Old Testament Theophanies usually are regarded as pre-incarnate appearances of the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ. Therefore such appearances might be described as Christopahanies.” (Kregel Dictionary of Bible and Theology, p.536)

The Salvation affecting significance of the Deity of Christ.

John 8:24

• Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

Jesus Became a Human Man.

Philippians 2:6-7

6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Born of a Virgin, not sinful by nature.

• We are by nature Children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3)

• As a result of the sin of Adam. (Romans 5:2)

• Those that are “In Adam” die. (1 Cor 15:22)

• Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was then born of a virgin. (Luke 1:35, Matthew 1:23)

• Jesus was Holy and without Sin. (Hebrews 7:26)

• Now all people that are “In Christ” live. (1 Cor 15:22)

Jesus was Fully Man.

• He prayed to the Father (John 17).

• He was tempted (Matt. 4:1).

• He has a body of flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).

• He wept (John 11:35)

• He grew in wisdom (Luke 2:52). • He died (Rom. 5:8).

God and Man.

• Jesus was 100% God and 100% Man in the same body, not half one and half of the other, but each in its fulness.

• The Theological term for this is the Hypostatic Union.

Jesus is our Prophet.

Moses Said:• “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me

from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.”(Deuteronomy 18:15)

Peter quoted this in reference to Jesus.

• “Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed to everything He says to you. ‘And it will be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ (Acts 3:22-23)

Jesus Our Prophet

In the Old Testament God Spoke Through Prophets.

• Surely the Lord God will do nothing, unless He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets. (Amos 3:7)

• Today He has SPOKEN through His Son.

• God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. (Hebrews 1:1-2

In Christ we are Complete.

Colossians 2:10

• and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;

Jesus Our Priest.

• Hebrews 7:23-27

• 23 The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing,

• 24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently.

• 25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

• 26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;

• 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

Jesus Our KingMatthew 27:11

Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.”

Revelation 17:14

They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”

He rules over a Kingdom that cannot be shaken!!

Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; (Hebrews 12:28)

The Sufficiency Of Christ.

• Jesus is our Creator (John 1:3, Colossians 1:16)

• We are created for Jesus (Colossians 1:16)

• In Jesus we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-10)

• In Jesus we are righteous (Romans 4:5)

• In Jesus we are born again, having a new nature (2 Corinthians 5:17)

• With Jesus, will we spend our eternity. (1 Thessalonians 4:17)

ITS ALL ABOUT HIM

Romans 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be

the glory forever. Amen.

Any Questions

Group Questions.

• 1, What would the implications be for us if Jesus was not fully God?

• 2, What would the implications be for us if Jesus had not been fully man while on the earth?

• 3, Do you think its important to witness to groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses that deny this truth about Christ? Why/Why not?
