In May, a number of MCC’s ministries wrap up their seasons and begin their sum- mer hiatus. Very Cool Sunday School ends on May 12. The Tuesday Study Group wraps up on May 7, Tuesday Night Fellowship ends on May 28. And the choir’s final Sunday will be May 12. That brings to mind another ending, as Bob Mirshak retires as our choir director after 19 years. Although the final Sunday for the choir is in May, we’ll be having a special recognition for Bob on Sunday, June 2. The month also brings several holidays of note. Of course, we all celebrate Moth- er’s Day on the second Sunday of the month (this year on May 12). But there’s also Memorial Day (May 27), Cinco de Mayo (May 5), and Syttende Mai (May 17) (and who can forget Clean Your Room Day and National Chocolate Chip Day). But another one that deserves attention from church folks is Pentecost. It’s not al- ways in May, but it is this year—May 19 (50 days after Easter). It’s the birthday of the church! On that day, the Holy Spirit was given to the early followers of Jesus, equip- ping them for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with those around them. Alt- hough it gets far less attention than other holidays on the Christian calendar, it may be the most important one for the church. It’s worth asking: how have we been gift- ed by the Spirit for ministry? In what ways can we reach out to the world around us to share the word and love of God? I’m gratified by the many ways our church members seek to do that. Some of it happens in church ministries and programs, like The Road Home and meals for The Crossing. Other times, people take it upon themselves to volunteer with organiza- tions or around issues they believe in. And our members and friends take seriously the call to serve people around them in ways suggested by “40 Days of Lenten Kind- ness.” When Jesus died, his followers thought that the movement was at an end. But it proved to be only the beginning. The triumph of Easter and the power of Pentecost demonstrated the love of God and empowered people to share that love with others. We’re wrapping up our program year and entering a period of decreased activity. But serving those around us in the name of Jesus Christ never goes out of season. Continue to share the love of God. And let us celebrate together the impact that our church has in our community and world. See you in church! Note: I will be away from church for a number of days in May. On May 4-5, Steph- anie and I will be visiting the church in South Bend, IN as they celebrate their 150 th anniversary. I will be in Nashville, TN May 13-17, attending a preaching conference. And on May 20-21, I will be attending a workshop related to staffing and staff supervi- sion. Please call the church office (831-4694) or my cell phone (215-8924) if you have any pastoral needs during those times.

Worship in May

Sunday, May 5 Sixth Sunday of Easter Psalm 46:1-11; 1 Corinthians 13:1-7, 11-13 “Faith, Hope, and Love: How, What, and When?” On this Sunday, while Pastor Jim is away, worship will be led by Barb and Dave Werner. In her sermon, Barb (a certi-fied lay speaker in the United Methodist Church) will ex-plore faith, hope, and love. She writes: “We are magnifi-cent human beings, full of love. We can become more aware of nurturing our own souls, taking care of our own needs, and taking in God’s wonderful love.” Dave (an or-dained elder in the United Methodist Church) with lead us in celebrating Holy Communion.

Sunday, May 12 Seventh Sunday after Easter Psalm 97:1-9; John 17:20-26 “Come Together” In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus says that “The glory that God has given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one.” On this Mother’s Day, Pastor Jim will explore the “ties that bind” in our families, our communities, and our churches.

Sunday, May 19 Pentecost Sunday What does it mean to be “set on fire” for God or by God? Don’t miss this “firey” Youth Sunday service led by MCC’s children & youth.

Sunday, May 26 First Sunday after Pentecost Romans 5:1-5; John 16:12-15 “Faith and Endurance” Today’s passage from Romans tells us that “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us.” Is that true? Can there be anything positive that comes from suffering? On this Memorial Day weekend, when we remember the sufferings, struggles, and sacrifices of soldiers down through the years, we will reflect on this question and see whether suffering can have a lasting, positive impact.

The following article appeared in the Winter 2013 edition of News from The Road Home: Dear Road Home,

My name is Eva and I would like to thank you on behalf of my family. If I had to sum up in one word how to describe The Road Home, it would be “hope,” because this is what they gave my family. Before meeting Georgie, our case manager at The Road Home, and the rest of Rapid Rehousing staff, my family was forced to divide in half after a brutal eviction in 2010.

After the first meeting with !e Road Home the fog started to lift. The kind words and support they gave us on a weekly basis made our journey easier. Soon we were a family again living in an apartment. The helpfulness did not end there. It is just the beginning of a life-long relationship with professionals whom I now consider my friends and fam-ily. Georgie did more than find us a home, she helped our family as a whole: mind, body and soul.

Since moving into the apartment we have been living in for 2 years now, I am now going on my 2nd year as a teacher at KinderCare. In addition, I vol-unteer as a peer advocate for individuals recently diagnosed with cancer, helping them navigate scary and complicated systems. My husband and I re-kindled our relationship through therapy. My two sons have entered 2nd and 6th grade successfully. My daughter has learned job ethics due to participat-ing in a youth job workshop.

I still share family news with my former case manager. My family loves shar-ing all of their achievements with her and The Road Home staff. I get excited when the phone rings and its Georgie. We know that we are not “just a client” to The Road Home, they treat you like family. Furthermore, this summer I

met a family who had lost their home, and I immediately gave them The Road Home’s phone number.

A thousand thank yous wouldn’t be enough for all that you have given my family. Thank you for giving us hope for a better tomorrow.

Sincerely, Eva & Family Our next hosting week is May 26-June 2. See the sign-up board in Fel-lowship Hall for volunteer opportunities.

TNF Talks about God!

Tuesday Night Fellowship (TNF) continues its study of What We Talk about When We Talk about God, by best-selling author Rob Bell. TNF read and dis-cussed Bell’s previous book, Love Wins, and found it stimulating and helpful. Discussion of this book thus far has been stimulating as well!

In his new book, Bell explains why both culture and the church resist talking about God, and shows how we can reconnect with the God who is pulling us forward into a better future. Bell uses his characteristic evocative storytelling to challenge everything you think you know about God. He tackles misconcep-tions about God and reveals how

God is with us, for us, ahead of us, and how understanding this could change the entire course of our lives.

Copies of the book will be available in Fellowship Hall, beginning on Easter Sunday, with a reading schedule included. Books are $16. Please make out checks to “Middleton Community UCC.”

TNF begins at 6 pm with a soup supper, followed by the study begin-ning at 6:30.

TNF will continue through May 21, at which time it will begin its summer break.

All are welcome to participate. See you there!

MCC Singers

Calling all 6th-12th graders!

MCC Singers is getting together again in prepara-tion for Youth Sunday

which is May 19 Rehears-als will be on Sundays May 5 and May 12 from 10:45am-11:30am after church. Contact Mindy Bergman at 833-3669 for

information!

Welcome, New Member!

During April, Brian Koenig became a member of MCC. Be sure to introduce yourself and welcome him to the church!

There are still a few good weeks available on the Camp Balsams schedule, particularly for cabin 2. Details on the remaining sched-

ule for sign-up are shown below. Camp Balsams, our retreat in the

north woods, is 5 miles east of Eagle Riv-er, Wisconsin, on Bass Lake, just east of the Chain of Lakes and just west of the Nicolet National Forest. It’s a wonderful place for an affordable family vacation while sharing fellowship with other members of your church community.

Weekly rates (Saturday noon to Satur-day noon) for 2013 are $175 for cabin 2, $325 for cabin 3, $300 for cabin 4 and $375 for cabin 5. A $50 non-refundable deposit is required.

The fact that the schedule fills up so fast has resulted in discussion of building a new cabin. We are not only in need of

a new cabin, but a fully-accessible cabin. The current facilities have narrow doors and hallways and small bathrooms that make it very difficult, if not impossible, for those with disabilities. Committee mem-bers have discussed the potential project with Pastor Jim and the Board of Fi-nance, and we are researching the possi-bilities in terms of designs, location and cost. Further work is needed to develop a proposal, including financial considera-tions, that can be presented to the Board of Finance, Church Council and congre-gation in the future. In the near future, we will also seek feedback from the con-gregation concerning the camp and pos-sible expansion.

Members of the church may now sign up for individual days for any available cabin.

Contact Bill Richner or the church of-fice if you have any questions.

Camp Balsams Sign-up Continues

Men’s Group Meets May 11

The MCC Men’s Group will meet

on Saturday, May 11, to discuss Mar-tin Luther King’s “Letter from Birming-ham Jail. Written 50 years ago, it is King’s response to criticism he had received (primarily from white clergy) regarding his work for civil rights for all people. We will read the letter it-self and an article about it in a recent

edition of The Christian Century mag-azine.

Copies of the letter and article are available on the faith formation table in Fellowship Hall or can be emailed to you. Just contact the church office.

Men’s Group begins at 8:00 am. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited!

Sanctuary Set-Up Team The Sanctuary Set-Up Team is a new opportunity for our congrega-tion and friends to participate in an important ministry of the church. Three or four times a year, chairs and risers are moved in order to accom-modate special programs.

The primary times are:

1. Summer seating.

2. Sunday before Bible School

(August): Chairs are removed for children’s activities and replaced for Sunday services at the end of the week

3. Changes for Christmas activities, including the pageant.

Please indicate your willingness to join in this endeavor by checking Sanctuary Set-Up Team on the pink sheet in the Sunday program.

THANK YOU! to all who created scarves for the United Church of Christ General Syn-od 2013 in Long

Beach, CA. Over 150 scarves were blessed in worship on April 28.

The scarves will be used to raise awareness and provide a colorful wit-ness of our desire to eliminate vio-lence in our communities. For more info on the Scarf Project visit: www.facebook.com/thescarfproject.

Looking ahead… the Knitting Group which formed to create the scarves has decided to keep going, branching out to create prayer shawls over the summer. Look for prayer shawl patterns and infor-mation on summer knitting gather-ings in Fellowship Hall. No experi-ence necessary!

For more information, please con-t a c t J o a n R i c h n e r ([email protected]).

Rainbow Scarf Project … and Beyond!

We have been having a wonderful time sharing the gift of a story with Bhutanese children—and their par-ents! Would you like to join our band of merry readers? We meet on May 20 the third Monday of the month, at the Good-man Library from 6:30–7:30pm. We will pull books ahead of time, so all that is needed is your voice and kind-ness.

The gift of a story is our joy and delight to give. Chil-dren have ranged in age from six months to twelve years. If you would like to be included in the pool of readers, please contact Mary Ann Drapcho (443-7030 or [email protected]) or sign up on the Missions and Stewardship table.

Do you know that our church participates in the Adopt-A-Highway program? We do, and we would like YOURYOURYOURYOUR participation. We pick up litter on CTH J

just west of the church three times a year. Because we’ve had such a late spring, we’re just getting started this year. We’d like to work either Wednesday, May 8 or Thursday, May 9; so, please check your calen-dars and let us know which day would be better for you. We meet at the church at 9 a.m., so we can car pool to our posts on CTH J. It

takes about one hour for us to work our part of the high-way. Should it rain, we will do our litter pickup the next Wednesday or Thursday. Would you please let us

know if you could help: Nick Breit-bach, at [email protected], or De-lores Haak, [email protected]. If you cannot help with our May cleanup, how about a later clean-up? Should Wednesdays not work for you, please let us know is anoth-er day would be better. We would love to hear from you.
