The Property

Middleton House is a magnificent Grade II Listed Georgian mansion that is steeped in fascinating history and host to wonderful character. The property occupies an elevated position on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Middleton-in-Teesdale and surrounded by glorious Teesdale countryside. Designed and built around 1823 by the prominent architect Ignatius Bonomi, Middleton House was significantly altered in the later 19th century and has passed through the ownership and use of a number of noteworthy figures. In the present day the main house offers remarkable characterful accommodation over three floors and is accompanied by impressive additional accommodation in The West Wing. This was part of the original property before it was divided into the main house and two wings in the 1990s.

Middleton House

The grand double door entrance leads to the expansive reception hall which sets the tone for the whole property. Character features flow through Middleton House including corniced ceilings with decorative roses, original window shutters, attractive fireplaces and solid wood panelling. The magnificent drawing room is bathed in natural light from double windows and adjoins a useful study/home office, whilst the dining room offers more formal entertaining space. The splendid open plan kitchen and breakfast room sits to the rear elevation with French doors opening to one side. The kitchen is fitted with a fine range of bespoke cabinetry and a spacious central island, whilst the clearly defined dining area has space for a large table and chairs. The kitchen is further served by a utility room, pantry and excellent storage including the distinctive wine cellar and two further cellar rooms.

The wide spindled staircase rises to the first floor via a half landing flooded with light. Positioned at either end of the house and overlooking the gardens to the rear are two remarkable oval-shaped bedroom suites. Both feature beautiful curved windows with shutters. The principal bedroom benefits from a stylish and spacious en-suite shower room with contemporary finish, whilst the guest suite has a large dressing room and an adjoining shower room. There are four further double bedrooms ranged across the front elevation of the first floor which are served by the family bathroom.

A second staircase continues up to the second floor which was formerly the servants’ quarters for Middleton House. There are four further bedrooms which offer great flexibility; one is currently used as a games room and the option to create an office area or ancillary living space will appeal to a variety of buyers. The second floor bedrooms are served by a bathroom. Also accessed from the upper hallway is hugely spacious attic and loft space which offers a wealth of further possibilities.

The West Wing

In addition to Middleton House, The West Wing is a fully independent adjoining property which shares the historic characteristics of the main home. The ground floor accommodation comprises a generous sitting room and a well-appointed kitchen and also a lovely double bedroom with adjacent shower room. There are two further bedrooms on the first floor served by a bathroom. The West Wing offers superb self-contained accommodation for a dependent relative or guests.

Externally

Middleton House stands in a generous plot with sweeping views to the front and extensive private gardens to the rear enclosed by stone wall boundaries. The gardens are mainly laid to lawn and are immaculately maintained. Mature trees dot the lawns and boundaries, including a truly inspiring copper beech tree. A flagged terrace runs across the rear of the house at first floor level, with seating space to relax in peace or dine with family and friends. Two useful garden sheds sit to one side and there is a detached garage along with additional parking space.
