MIDGET FURY 1 BRINGS HOME THE HARDWARE. Last weekend, the Midget Fury 1 team found their mojo and brought home the hardware winning the Intermediate House Division at the 9th Annual Winter Classic in Cobourg. Employing some great team defensive play, paired with a swift and potent offense and topped with stellar goaltending, the team outscored the opposition 17-1 on their way to victory. Beginning with a well-played game against their rival Ice Wolves Red team, the Fury displayed an impressive PK successfully killing off 6 penalties assessed by the grumpy refs. The girls controlled the majority of the play while not on the PK and great goaltending at from both teams resulted in a 2-0 win with goals from Chloe Watson and bantam call-up Kylie Greenslade. Their second game against the host West Northumberland Wild was perhaps the best team effort from the Fury this year. Quick skating with tenacious back-checking, heads-up passing and an outstanding breakout led to a dominating 5-0 win with sniper Sarah McCallum scoring all 5 goals while the team allowed only 2 shots on net from the Wild. Game 3 was a classy effort against, against the Scarborough Sharks. The game featured the unique opportunity of sibling/cousin rivalry on opposing bench’s (Coach Stone & Laurel [Fury] vs. sibling Trainer Ingram & Zoe [Sharks]). Continuing their outstanding play, the Fury jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the 1 st period and cruised to an 8-0 victory with the girls gaining experience in unfamiliar positions over the last period. Allowing only 6 shots on net, the Fury finished the round robin with a perfect record of 3-0, outscoring opponents 15- 0. The girls got off to a slow start in the Final game against the Ice Wolves Red team and despite her outstanding play all tournament, JT Turner-Davey’s shut-out run came to an end less than 2 minutes into the game when a broken play resulted in an early 1-0 lead for Red. Shaking off the blow to their confidence, the girls pressed the play and were finally rewarded with a goal by Jenna Leslie with less than 5

Continuing their outstanding play, the Fury jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the 1st period and cruised to an 8-0 victory with the girls gaining experience in unfamiliar positions over the last period. Allowing only 6 shots on net, the Fury finished the round robin with a perfect record of 3-0, outscoring opponents 15-0.

The girls got off to a slow start in the Final game against the Ice Wolves Red team and despite her outstanding play all tournament, JT Turner-Davey’s shut-out run came to an end less than 2 minutes into the game when a broken play resulted in an early 1-0 lead for Red. Shaking off the blow to their confidence, the girls pressed the play and were finally rewarded with a goal by Jenna Leslie with less than 5 minutes to play in the 2nd period. The Fury continued their superb play throughout the final period, but were unable to capitalize on their many opportunities and regulation ended in a 1-1 tie. During OT a wild scramble in front of the Fury net nearly won it for Red as they hit a post and had shots blocked by the defense while our goalie scrambled without a stick. Ultimately OT did not solve anything and a shootout ensued

After 3 shooters, the teams were tied at 1 goal each and the contest proceeded with individual shooters. On the 6th shot, the Fury thought they had won when Hilary Howes appeared to put one in off the post, however the ref waved it off. Finally, in the 9th round, Feather Barberstock found a 5-hole opening for her first goal of the season, the game win and the Tournament Victory. Congratulations Midget Fury 1 on a very well played tournament and well deserved win. The Winter Classic Banner will make a great addition hanging from the rafters at the North Frontenac Arena.
