Message from the SuperintendentThe Midview Local School District is much more than ratings on a report card. Midview is full of hard working and talented students, teachers and staff who excel in the classroom, on the field and on the stage.

I am pleased to present this District Profile as representation of all of the programs, opportunities and successes of Midview.

At Midview, our vision is Expect More, Achieve More, and I see this happening every day in our district. The hard work and focus from our staff continues to help our students reach their full potential.

Midview is a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focused district. Our goal is to engage all students in their own learning and prepare them for the 21st-century workforce by teaching them the skills of collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.

We are also committed to raising the whole child by focusing on social and emotional intelligence to support our students through their adolescent growth.

As a superintendent, I appreciate and love being a part of the Midview Schools. We are fortunate to have a community that is committed to education, supporting the schools and getting involved.

Whether you are a parent or a community member, I encourage you to get involved in our schools. There are countless volunteer opportunities in our buildings. I invite you to join Midview and be a part of something great!

Academic HighlightsThe Midview Local School District begins preparing students for college and careers as young as kindergarten. The district provides a variety of academic pathways to meet the needs of all students and to prepare them for life after they leave Midview.

STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math) Courses for In-Demand CareersProject Lead the Way Project Lead the Way (PLTW) provides hands-on learning experiences for K-12 students. Through an engaging, participation-based classroom environment, PLTW empowers students to develop the knowledge and skills they will need to be successful in their futures. PLTW’s pathways include engineering and biomedical science. Lessons are focused on engaging students in hands-on activities, projects, and problems, helping them learn to think critically, solve real-world challenges and reimagine the world around them.

PLTW Launch The PLTW Launch program is designed for elementary and intermediate-age students. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade use structured approaches, like the engineering design process, and employ critical thinking. They apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind, learning that it is OK to take risks and make mistakes, all while learning how to become problem solvers. ALL Midview students in grades K-6 participate in the Launch learning experience. The culminating project for students in sixth grade allows students to program robots!

PLTW Gateway to Technology All Midview Middle School students participate in Gateway to Technology by taking Design and Modeling in seventh grade and Automation and Robotics in eighth grade. Gateway to Technology empowers students to take initiative in their learning through 10 hands-on, engaging units. As students learn more about the world around them and begin to think about their futures, they become inspired to pursue careers in STEM fields and beyond.

High School EngineeringThe high school PLTW Engineering program gives students real, hands-on engineering problems and empowers them to take control of their own education. The program’s courses present students with real-world challenges that encourage collaborative thinking and problem-solving, giving them skills that will be applicable throughout their careers.

High School BiomedicalStudents in PLTW’s Biomedical Science program are tasked with solving scenarios that professionals in biomedical careers may actually experience. Students are equipped with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, giving them the chance to gain hands-on experience and critical thinking skills before graduating high school. The program’s courses present students with real-world challenges that encourage collaborative thinking and problem-solving, giving them skills that will be applicable throughout their careers.

Little Middie Preschool Program The Midview Local School District Little Middie Preschool Program will be four years old this school year! The primary intention of this program is to provide our students with disabilities the preschool service that they need to prepare for kindergarten. The program is open to students without disabilities, but space is limited.

Tuition Free All-Day, Every Day Kindergarten The Midview Local School District provides tuition free all-day, every day kindergarten for students. This allows all children in the district the ability to receive the same amount of instruction as they prepare for first grade.

Career ExposureAt Midview, our goal is to provide students the opportunity to explore a variety of career paths while they are still in high school, setting us apart from many other districts. Our biomedical and engineering programs expose students to that type of education and career for free, before they spend thousands of dollars at the college level.

Both the East Intermediate School and Midview Middle School have Career Days that invite local professionals to come and share about their profession. This encourages our students to start thinking and planning for their future education and career endeavors while exposing them to a variety of opportunities. This continues at the high school with our College and Career Day but includes continued classroom visits from local professionals and field trips to local companies and colleges for deeper exposure for our students. These field trips include places like Beckett Corporation, NASA, Hyland Software, Ridge Tool, Cleveland State University, Cleveland Clinic, Lorain County Community College, and Akron University.

STEM-based career fields are in high demand in northeast Ohio and across the country. Midview will continue to build exposure to these fields through PLTW and other electives.

MyUniversity: Earn College Credit While Still in High SchoolThis partnership program with Lorain County Community College provides Midview High School students the opportunity to complete college-level classes, earn college credit, and eventually obtain an associate’s degree while still at Midview – all at no cost to the student. Midview offers 37 college credits and three advanced placement courses. This represents the full Ohio Transfer Module, which encompasses credits guaranteed to transfer to any of Ohio’s public colleges and universities. Our goal is to give students the opportunity to graduate high school with an associate’s degree, as well as a strong understanding of what to expect in college.

Midview High School is the first in Lorain County to develop a unique partnership with Lorain County Community College and Hyland Software Inc. to provide a CCP Information Technology course in which 40 percent of the course will be at Hyland’s Software’s Westlake headquarters.

Additional OpportunitiesStudents at Midview High School also have the opportunity to take honors courses and Advanced Placement courses. Students interested in taking career and technical education classes have the ability to attend the Lorain County Joint Vocational School.

The ArtsInvolvement in the arts is important to academic success and creating well-rounded students. Midview offers a variety of opportunities for students of all ages to explore their artistic side.

Digital Arts and Advanced Digital ArtsIn Digital Arts, students utilize digital software and emerging technology to create and explore the fundamentals of digital illustrations, graphic design, typography and photo manipulation with a focus on artistic expression and problem solving. In Advanced Digital Arts, students take the above processes, techniques and tools to add unique and creative approaches to problem solving with continued focus on artistic expression.

Visual ArtsEach year, the Visual Arts Departments hosts the ARTastic Fest, where almost every Midview student in preschool through high school has artwork represented. The 2017 event saw more than 800 works of art on display. The ARTastic Fest is a culminating celebration of the arts in Midview attended by students, parents, staff and community members. A number of students are awarded ribbons for their pieces each year. These pieces are then displayed in the Board of Education Office.

Artistic Highlights• Both the Symphonic Blue and Symphonic Silver Bands increased their ratings at the Ohio Music Education

Association’s Large Group Adjudicated Event. • 10 Midview High School students’ artwork was selected to be displayed at the Emerging Artists Exhibit in

Columbus. • Midview Middle and High School students participated in the annual Lorain County Scholastic Art

The Midview Air Force JROTC program begin in 1968 as one of the Founding Units nationwide. The Air Force JROTC courses focus on the development of flight throughout the centuries. It starts with ancient civilizations, then progresses through time to modern day. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the

development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force; and a brief astronomical and space exploration history. LE 100 introduces cadets to the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) program providing a basis for progression through the rest of the AFJROTC program while instilling elements of good citizenship. The course covers: cadet and Air Force organizational structure; uniform wear; customs, courtesies, and other military traditions; and citizenship. Wellness Program: This is an integral part of the AFJROTC program with 20% (one day a week) of the course devoted to wellness instruction. The objective is to motivate cadets to lead healthy, active lifestyles into their adult lives.

Student Wellness At Midview, we focus on the whole child, including social, emotional and physical education.

Walking PathMidview’s campus features a walking path connecting all four school buildings. When weather permits, our teachers use the path as an outdoor classroom and as way to keep students moving throughout the day.

We also encourage parents and community members to use the walking paths on the weekends, during the summer and before and after school hours.

Addiction Awareness MeetingsIn February and April, Midview hosted a two-part Addiction Awareness series with the goal of raising awareness on the issue of drug and alcohol abuse in the local community. The district partnered with the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and Lorain County Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services (LCADA). The first night of the series focused on Hidden in Plain Sight, an interactive exhibit by the Bath and Copley police departments that is designed to resemble a teenager’s bedroom. The exhibit contains more than 150 items that may be indicative of dangerous or risky behaviors, including substance abuse, violence, eating disorders, juvenile crime, technology, risky games/challenges and more.

The second evening in April featured a panel discussion on the types of drugs and what to look for, what law enforcement is doing to stop the problem and the use of K9 units. A video created by Elyria High School students on the opioid epidemic was also be shown.

Digital DangersStudents of all ages are spending more and more time online and on their phones. To help avoid online dangers, Midview hosted a Digital Dangers presentation for middle and high school parents, students, teachers and staff. The presentation focused on the potential dangers of risky, unmonitored online behavior and what parents should watch for in their teens’ internet use. It also covered trends in teen social media use, anonymous app trends, new dangers like live video streaming and camouflage apps, digital parenting tips and when to involve law enforcement.

United We SweatIn September, Midview East Intermediate and Midview Middle School students participated in the second annual United We Sweat Field Day. Not your typical field day, this event was a collaborative effort among multiple agencies focused on getting students to be active while educating them about healthy choices. Students participated in physical activity, learned about the dangers of tobacco/vaping, learned about proper hydration and had a great time doing it. This whole event was a collaboration among some very generous organizations such as Ross Environmental, Lorain County Community College, the Lorain County General Health District, United Way of Lorain County, and the staff of East and MMS.

TechFit ProgramThree middle school teachers, Aubin D’Andrea, Kelly Groomes and Lynn Magyar, attended an intense week-long training in South Carolina to learn how to program computers and how to fuse that knowledge with physical activity. From this training, the teachers started an afterschool club called TechFit. The task of this group is to teach the students how to program the computers to run the hardware and to create a physical game. Each week, the teachers and students meet to program the computers and develop a game.
