Sunday 11 May

I was driving home from the neighbourhood meeting in One Tree Point two weeks ago with my car radio tuned to the National programme where there was a documentary programme about “preppers” or survivalists in America who are preparing for the collapse of civilization as we know it. These people are building underground bunkers and stocking them with food, water, blankets, clothing and guns to keep everyone else away from their supplies. They are angry at President Barack Obama’s efforts to tighten up on gun legislation insisting they will need

or tornado etc., to protect themselves from looters.

would survive, which those “preppers” interviewed on the radio, assumed with a manic glee, would be themselves. All this was in sharp contrast to what I had just been listening to at the One Tree Point meeting where people were talking about how they could care for one another in an emergency and setting up systems so they can make sure everyone in their community is safe. Where would we be with out our sense of community and without all those people who put in hours of

volunteer time to set up and maintain our community institutions? Hiding in our individual bunkers each with a blanket, some tins of baked beans, a rapidly running empty water container and a gun, perhaps? I have deep respect for Jocelyn Mudford, our Mother of the Year who is bringing up two grandchildren on her own. Just when she might expect some free time, being able to take life at a slower pace and perhaps a bit of money to spare and spend on herself, she has taken on two children full time. They are beautiful children and Jocelyn is already reaping rewards in the love they both obviously have for their Nanny. I hope, she will be rewarded tenfold for her efforts as they grow. Here is someone who understands the importance of giving children a secure and loving upbringing. She is determined to keep her grandchildren out of foster care and to give them the best possible start in life. Our single most serious national problem, our country’s most shameful statistic, is its high level of abuse and neglect of children. Well here is a problem - solver. Someone who has stepped into the breach.

Let’s hear it for the problem-solvers

Despite having a game later the same day, on Saturday morning 3 May, four members of the Waipu Premier Rugby team carried six large half round posts down to where the Waipu Lions Club will build bridges over several swampy sections of the route. The posts were donated to the project by the Northpine timber mill. The Lions are extending the coastal trail to Ding Bay. At present people can walk from Waipu Cove to Waterman Drive. The extension will take the trail approximately another 500 metres or another 20 minutes to half an hours walking.

The Ruakaka Recreation Centre gym is well used by people of all ages The Ruakaka Recreation Centre gymnasium is in full swing thanks to the efforts and skills of the volunteers and part time workers who run the facility. The gym now has close to 100 subscribed members with an additional large group of people (sometimes as many as 20) coming along on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between the hours of 7.30am and 12 noon, when the gym doors are left open and people can use the machines for just $2. These are the mornings the centre’s co-ordinators Wai Mason and Dave Evans are on duty and opening the gym to people at such a low rate while they are in attendance, works for those on a tight budget and people who want to try the facilities out before deciding to purchase a key and membership. The $2 casual entry arrangement was the brain wave of Beverly Woods, a previous co-ordinator. Andreas Thirling, the Recreation Centre Committee Chairman said, “People seem to like this idea and they tell their friends and it has just grown from there.”He said from an income point of view it also seems to work out as the gym is paying for itself with grants from the ASB Community Trust and the Oxford Trust that help

A separate women’s gym has been set up in what was the original gym space and this was expanded late last year taking over the Bream Bay United football storage shed. The football gear is now stored in a purpose built shed. Winston Woods and Spencer Cummings, known around Ruakaka as The Two Matua, carried out most of this renovation work. Term 2 has started well. We have had to put in alternative toilet arrangements for the students until Thursday when the rst of our revamped toilet blocks will be ready for the girls. Everything is ready apart from the door partitions that have been held up.

During the holidays the College resembled a bomb site with workers working in all areas. Cable-net started our SNUP upgrade (School Network Upgrade Project) in the second week of the holidays. They have completed the trenching work and some of the new cabling work. They will be working from 3.30pm to 2.30am in the morning for the next 4 to 5 weeks completing our upgrade. North-com re-cabled the Admin block during week two. North-land Property Maintenance completed further work on the Dental Clinic conversion to two (2) Percussion rooms and nearly completed the rst Girls’ set of toilets. They have demolished the main Girls’ and Boys’ toilet blocks including adding new door access and have rooms 15 and 18 nearly ready to hand back to the school. With so many workers working all over the site it has been dif -cult to do our normal term holidays clean up. We hope we can address this at the next PTA working bee on Sunday 18th May. We will have gardening work, pathway edging work, painting and sweeping jobs to be completed. We hope we will have a good turnout.

GIFT VOUCHER IDEAS FOR MOTHERS’ DAY

Jocelyn Mudford is the Bream Bay News’ Mother of the Year. Jocelyn is aged 73 years old and bringing up her two grandchildren Ashleigh aged 14 and Robert aged 5. She has looked after Robert since he was just three months old. It was hard she said taking on a baby in her late 60s and having to get up to feed him every two hours through the night. It was made harder by the fact Robert was born with a cleft pallet and the milk he was drinking had a tendency to come out his nose. “However, we got through that and the operation at Middlemore Hospital when he was 18 months old.” Robert is now an active, happy, little boy who clearly loves his Nanny. Giving Jocelyn a rather exuberant hug he breaks the chain holding a locket around her neck.

She gave this up to help care for the children of her oldest daughter and son in law who were farming in Taipuha. This daughter, Wendy who now lives with her family on a farm in Waipu, helps and supports Jocelyn with the two children, often having them to stay overnight and taking them to sport. She is planning to take her mother on a trip to Australia this winter for a well-earned break. A son also helps when he can. When the children go away for a few nights, Jocelyn said she goes to the Ruakaka Library and stocks up on books. “I come home and give the house a good clean and then I just have time to myself reading.”Since Robert has started at Ruakaka Primary she has also started an on line course of painting lessons and some of her colourful acrylic paintings decorate the walls of their home. Money is tight as, although grandparents raising their own grandchildren now get an

The famous Canadian short story writer Allistair MacLeod who died on Easter Sun-day at the age of 77 visited Waipu for a week in 2011. This photograph of Mr. Ma-cLeod and his wife Anita standing in front of the Waipu monument was sent to the Bream Bay News by Bev of Cape Breton. Beverly said Mr. MacLeod, a native of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia was “one of Canada’s, if not the world’s, best short story writers.”“As the world’s foremost chronicler of the Scottish diaspora, he was especially fas-cinated by the Waipu area. His brilliant short stories and novel, No Great Mischief distill the essence of the dispossessed Cape Breton Gael like no other writer. Canada mourns the passing of this gentle, humble, and brilliant man.”

.HEAD LICE – Getting rid of the unwelcome ‘lodger’Its back to school time and when young heads get together over books and play then outbreaks of head lice are likely. Head scratching is a sign, but some peo-ple get a ‘tickling’ feeling of something moving in their hair. There’s no need to be embarrassed – even the cleanest heads get them. But, they are persistent creatures so you need to be persistent to get rid of them. “Come and talk to us”, say Self Care pharmacists, “for advice about treating and controlling head lice.”

allowance from the state, they do not receive as much money as foster parents do. Two thirds of Jocelyn’s pension goes on rent for the three bedroom rural Ruakaka house they all live in. Ashleigh loves horses and is, says Jocelyn “a good little rider.” However, the budget doesn’t stretch to owning and maintaining a horse and since they moved away from Waipu several years ago Ashleigh has not been able to attend pony club. Ashleigh has lived permanently with Jocelyn since she was six years old. Prior to this she spent a lot of time with her Nanny including an 18-month period from the

age of around four. Another child, a boy a year younger than Ashleigh lived with Jocelyn for two years but is now in the care of his paternal grandfather. Jocelyn said the hardest thing is that sometimes she would just like to be a grandmother, enjoying and spoiling the children but because they live with her permanently she has to be the person who sets the limits. She says ideas about child rearing and education have changed since the time she was a young mother. “Obviously you can’t smack children any more. Nowadays you are supposed to reason with them. I think this is good most of the time. Sometimes, however, you just have to draw the line.” Jocelyn said the best thing about having the children live with her is “knowing that they are safe.” As their mother is unable to look after them, the alternative would be a CYPS family home, which Jocelyn is determined to keep them out of. Two years ago Jocelyn had the worst year of her life, loosing both her mother and her oldest son in the space of seven months. The son died suddenly after suffering two big aneurisms to the brain. Last year Jocelyn herself suffered a stroke and ended up in Whangarei hospital. “I know what caused it. I took up smoking again”, she said. She discovered while recuperating in hospital that she had a younger, more active attitude than some of the other people in the hospital beds around her. “They say children keep you young but I had just always felt really tired. However when I was up there in hospital and saw how much faster I recovered than some of the other people of my own age, I began to think there might be something in it. Mind you some of them had suffered more serious strokes than I had.” Jocelyn says she doesn’t think she would be alive today if it wasn’t for the children. “I know I have to keep going for them.”

Marsden Lions are busy with their club’s big annual fundraiser, the Charity Golf Tournament, which will be held at the Waipu Golf Club on Friday 16 May from 9am.This is an 18-hole tournament and the $75 entry fee per person includes course fees, an evening meal, on course food and refreshments and prizes for all. Lion Hope Laurence said the price has been brought down from $100 to $75 with the idea this will encourage more participation.

giving, so participants may like to take a bit of extra cash along. Beginner golfers are welcome. “If someone hasn’t played before we will team him or her up with others who are in the same league. We are not going to put beginners in with professional players. I have never played golf before myself, but I might be giving it a go. Everyone ends up getting a prize ”, said Hope.“It’s really just a fun day out. Because some of the Marsden Lions are keen on golf, we thought we would try it out and it has grown from there.”The three previous tournaments have raised $23,000, which has gone to North Haven Hospice and to local community groups with an emphasis on youth. Last year $2000 went to the First Ruakaka Scout Group to help with the cost of attending a scouting jamboree in Fielding in December. Local businesses sponsorship of each hole on the course covers the costs of running the event, which means all funds raised go to the supported charities. This year Sky TV sports commentator Scotty (Sumo) Stevenson has promised to bring along a team. Entry forms are available at the Links Café at the Waipu Golf Course. A big crowd of 80 people turned up to the mangrove clearance working bee between the Ruakaka Holiday Beach Holiday park and Princes Rd. over ANZAC weekend 26 and 27 April. The Ruakaka Residents and Ratepay-ers Association has a resource consent from the Northland Regional Coun-cil to clear mangrove from the area which the group says are encroaching on shorebird foraging areas and san-

“In modern double glazed houses we can’t hear the tsunami sirens”, residents of La Pointe and Kowe Lakes subdivisions told Margaret Mitchell, the Ruakaka Civil Defence co-ordinator at a meeting last month.

Tree Point, all located on power poles. The sirens are supplied and operated by Northpower but as all the electric power lines run underground in the above two subdivisions and the sirens depended on a particular type of electricity supply to operate them, it was not possible to locate any in the above two subdivisions. The same is true of the Ruakaka Village, which also has underground electricity wires. Margaret said that the sirens are only one way of warning people about an approaching tsunami. Having good networks in place was another. With

many new people moving into the district it was important to keep phone trees updated so civil defence co-ordinators would know who to contact in case of an emergency. She also explained that should there be an emergency, up – to - date information would be posted on the Whangarei District Council’s website – www.wdc.govt.nzshould be a sign that people who had vacated their homes after a tsunami warning should be able to leave on their front door or letterboxes to save civil defence co-ordinators the trouble of checking if they are still inside. Margaret agreed this was a very good idea and she would take it back to her Civil Defence committee.

All the chairs were taken and people were standing at the back in the Marsden Yacht Club on Wednesday 23 April for presentations by Sergeant David Hamilton of the Bream Bay Police, Neighbourhood Support co-or-dinator Don Fraser, One Tree Point Community Patrol chairman Peter Hope and Margaret Mitchell of Ruaka-ka Civil Defence. Sergeant Hamilton reassured the mostly elderly peo-ple that, although “things might happen from time to time”, they actually lived in “a very safe community.”He stressed that people should not hesitate to call 111 if they felt unsafe or they suspected a crime was in prog-ress in their neighbourhood. Don Fraser, of the Neighbourhood Support Group, said that as some people had moved away and many new people had moved into One Tree Point there was a big work in progress updating the phone tree networks the group relied upon. He said the group was short of co-ordinators to look af-

Margaret Mitchell said the Civil Defence group worked closely with the Neighbourhood Support so updating

the phone tree network was vital. She told the meeting that the Ruakaka emergency re-sponse plan was available in the Ruakaka Library and on the Whangarei District Council website. Peter Hope said it was wonderful to see so many peo-ple at the meeting. “It shows we are a caring community.” He said when the community patrols began several years ago “we used to see a lot of young fellows out

-pening now. We believe this is because of the extra eyes and ears we provide for the Police.” He said the patrol is always looking for new members and anyone interested in joining should phone Soraya Nisbet – 027 201 5333. One Tree Point patrollers use their own cars but have

vehicles while they are on the job.“If you see a car moving around slowly and it has that badge, you are safe. If it hasn’t got the badge ring 111.”
